Came across this in another forum I frequent. Thought I'd pass it along:

I read one of those hand dryers in a restroom the other day. It said it was approved by the N.A.P.H.H.- The National Association for the Promotion of Hand Hygiene. So, apparently, there ARE people with less of a life than the members of these boards........

In fact, that's why they are giving it away free; because to get it to work on Mac OS 10.4, you have to download DAZ Studio plus a bunch of other stuff that ties you into their product line. W4nkers.

Who needs Bryce? Terragen is free as in no cost; Wings 3D, Blender and Yafray are free as in freedom. And all of these run on 10.4.

Bryce 5 works in 10.4.5, but all the save and open dialogs appear behind the main screen so there is no way to save or load. I get around this by opening a duplicate of an old scene and deleting everything in it. And why get Bryce 5? Because it rules!

And freedom is not free, it is very expensive.

You obviously didn't understand what I meant. Terragen is free for non-commercial use. This means you can use it without cost.

Blender, Wings and Yafray are free and open source pieces of software that are released under non-restrictive licenses. They are not only free (as in "no cost") but you are largely free to what you want with the software and it's source code. That's freedom.

Anyway, my point is that the software I mentionned is in my opinion much superior to Bryce, partly because it is (really) free.

ATMOS owns a copy of Bryce5 that runs just great under Mac OS X 10.4.7. Philip and I recently sat downt to try and fix a Terragen landscape, and we first tried to fix the errors using Terragen itself.

Terragen is a disaster. The interface is horrid, it's slow as a wet week, and you have next to no fine-grain control over what you're making. "Realism" wins out over "looks good".

Phil and I tore our hair out, then gave up. We remade the scene in Bryce.

I don't think fine-grain control ever was the point of terragen, but do you think Bryce is that good at it?
Bryce might be ok at doing fine grain control, but it's so clumsy at it.

I love Terragen. The download there didn't work for me, so I can't judge Bryce.

Nope - Bryce's motion controls and positioning tools are cruddy. That said, they're better than Terragen.

Also, I hate tools like Terragen that force you to traipse across a world looking for a good place to take a photograph. I want to make my good place, not try and guess where a good place is!

Phil summed it up best, I think, when he said to me (with a grimace): "It looks like a graphics application made by programmers for programmers. They want the tool to make the art for them."

'Nuff said.

I totally agree.

When it comes to Bryce, I'd sometimes rather use C4D.
It become a question about time and effort.

I feel bryce is good for an ok result over a short amount of time, while it takes much more time to get a great result.

Well said, pipeline. I've played around with terragen (didn't know it was still free though; thought I just had a old public beta), and you do have to look around until you find something good. Now I'm thinking I'll draw the heightmaps in Photoshop, and use Terragen to just rough it up a little bit to add realism.

Also, the deadline apparently has been extended to September 13th, so I'm downloading Bryce now.

and pez, just use the "free as in speech, not free as in beer" line everyone else uses wink.gif.

FYI, I've just picked up a copy of Bryce 6. It's not perfect, but it does now work unlike 5/.5 which utterly failed for most 10.4+ users, plus the DAZ Studio tie-in is now optional.
