Just wondering, how do people get their stats from their most recent crawl on here? I can't figure it out, and I didn't get any instruction manuals or Read-mes with the game. I am running the game on an intel based mac.

Wow, that's pretty terrible. I fallen, then had to use teleport scrolls to get to areas that actually had exits, but nothing that bad.

I also seem to get some potentially great gear early on if I'm a Troll Monk - most of which isn't of use for me since....well, I'm a monk. Has anyone else noticed this? Seriously, I've had multiple games with a Troll Monk where I get multiple spell books, magic centaur armor, magic longswords and war axes before I get to the temple.

On a side note, a Monk with that healing god that demands sacrificing weapons is a natural fit.

EDIT: Kasofa1, those options are available for everyone. If an option is grey, it means it's not a recommended game, as usually the skills of that race don't translate well to the class.

Yeah, unseen horrors are especially annoying, because unlike orc wizards (who only move one square at a time, meaning you can usually guess where they are), they move like bats, 3-4 spaces at a time. If you are in a wide open space, unless you have a scroll of immolation or can see invisible, you have no way of killing them. If I don't have either of those, I usually just run to the next and/or previous level.

Ok. So heres a question. I've got a great demonspawn stalker going. Level 8, just got makleb god, good list of spells and weaponry blah blah blah.


So I just found the orc mines, do i go in now or do i stay in the dungeon and stick with that for now and then go there later? I'm level 8 and on the 7th floor of the dungeon and not really sure if it's suicide to walk into an orc priest nest.

Didn't see this. In short look in a folder called morgue. Should be filled with text docs of your poor poor dead characters lives. Also the game should have come with a readme .pdf file, and when in doubt the wiki has many answers.

Question is now pointless. In the end i wound up going a little ways into the lair and trying to go lower, but i hit a wall where lair monsters could rape the hell out of me as could the normal dungeon monsters. Great run though.


Edit:
So to relax i made a troll monk(pretty damn simple concept) and he died on level 2 or 3 of the dungeon. I named him blargh. I then tried again. I named the next one blargh. He died......to the ghost of the previous blagrh on the same level of the dungeon. Repeat this 3 GOD DAMN TIMES in a row. My lower dungeon is now apparently haunted with ghost angry troll monks named blargh....

To those of you who routinely get to the Lair and soforth:

Do you stay at the upper levels and do a bit of grinding (say, try to gain a couple levels, then move on, then gain some more, etc, according to some forumla), do you attempt to "complete" each floor and move on, or do you run through and try to get as far and fast as you can?

I've been trying to "complete" a floor, then move on. It seems to work okay for fighters, but the Assassins, mages, and artificers that I've tried usually start feeling some pain before I can get to the Lair. I'm wondering if I should go down to say, level three, head back up to 1, and wander around to gain a few levels. Hard to do as a Spriggan, since they pretty much need to keep moving in order to have enough food, but for...say, a Kobold Assassin, who can pretty much eat anything...it might work. Anyone try that?

Thanks for the help, it turns out that I downloaded the wrong file onto my mac so it didn't come with any readme's or folders, only an application. But now I'm on a Windows and I'll try that out.

Hard to do as a Spriggan, since they pretty much need to keep moving in order to have enough food, but for...say, a Kobold Assassin, who can pretty much eat anything...it might work. Anyone try that?

When i was there i went down about 2 floors and then floor 3 was way to hard so i went back to the dungeon to continue to go lower. Hit a wall and was going to backtrack to the orcish mines and try my luck there but got killed first. Was also thinking of going into the swamp(which i found the entrance to in the lair) but didn't. I think the idea is that you eventually hit a point where you backtrack and get yourself built up so you can go through to the bottom levels. This is the biggest problem with a spriggian because food is always such a huge issue. Either way i don't think you try to "Grind" a level, you just have to realize that you've hit your limit in this area and come back later. Kinda like a metroid game.

As for my brother there is a hive level, but he wasn't in that. The game just decided he should die.

Edit 2:
Razzle you're the only one who's managed a 15+ character. What should i be doing around 11 when i start finding lairs and what not? What stats and skills should i be pumping early? Seems like you need to be specific early and boost up your weapon and spellcasting so you can kill, and then branch out later, but i feel like suddenly the enemies jump like hell in lethality and i'm in an odd situation where i can't continue because i'm too weak.

Then again im not sure how true that is because it's hard to tell since i tend to underestimate some bad guys and die damn quickly after(fear the skeleton.)

I've been consistently getting 15+ characters lately, so it seems I'm doing something right (although it sucks hard when you die, especially with things like the Sword of Power which I will probably never see again). I'll tell you guys what I do:

Try to buff up the skill that you are going to be using most. For example, Assassins will want to have higher dexterity, because it affects how stealthy you are, and also affects your EV rolls (although only up to DEX 16,17 for most races, after that it doesn't matter). However, they will also want to have decent strength so their Stab attacks are more deadly. All of the stats that you want to boost when you get a chance are class-dependent. Understanding what stat does what helps a lot in this regard. Here's a few basic rules:

Strength increases the amount of damage you do, the amount you can carry without being encumbered, and how effective you are with certain weapons (two-handed weapons, or any weapon that says "it is best used by the strong).

Intelligence increases the likelihood that you can cast spells successfully, and ALSO decreases spell hunger. This is essential for any spriggan spellcaster who makes it to late game, as non-meat food starts to get scarce (the Hive is a key area for spriggans who have poison resistance).

Dexterity increases your stealth bonus and, plays a part in your EVasion, and determines how effective you are with dex-based weapons (short swords, quick blades, any weapon that says "it is best used by the dexterous")

So really I can't tell you which stats to pump, but you should definitely focus on one for a little bit until it is at a number you are satisfied with.

Skills should also not be ignored. If you need more HP, don't be afraid to turn off your other skills so that most of your XP goes into "Fighting." When you level that up, you can focus on other skills. Being well-rounded is a good overall strategy, but having one or two very specialized skills will often save you in situations you would have died in.

That said, you'll probably need to adapt as the circumstances change. If your god just gave you a fantastic randart weapon, and you're not skilled in it, it's probably worth it to use it anyway, since you'll gain those first few levels very quickly, and they will make a lot of difference. Try to play to your race's strengths. For example, I've noticed that lots of people here play Spriggans. Spriggans are the fastest creature in the game. Use this, no matter what class you are. Spriggans are a good early class, because they can teach you something that you need to know in order to survive in Crawl. If you enter a situation you think you may not be able to handle, RUN AWAY. You can come back and beat up monsters later, but sometimes they are too strong, or too condensed. For example, if you find a situation similar to Cham's, where you stumble upon a massive amount of enemies, you can run away after you alert them. They will then "wake up" and start to search the dungeon. You'd think this was bad, but what it does is spreads them out so you can take them on one at a time, instead of en masse.

Two more things: Stick with a certain race/class combination if you it works for you. Stick with it for a while, so you can fully understand how to use it. Learning different styles of play is important, as you have to adapt to a lot of different things in crawl.

Last thing, probably the most important. Explore the entire level of each dungeon. You might not be able to kill every enemy as you explore, but you'll get far more experience than if you only explored half the level. A good rule of thumb is that you should always be at least the same level as the level of the dungeon you are on. This is good up until about level 14, when you start leveling up less quickly. If you find yourself on level 10 of the dungeon and you are level 8, try going back and doing some branches. Sometimes you don't have a say in this, like when you fall through a shaft (in which case you should always try to find your way back up to where you were). That's just Crawl.

I think that about covers it for now. I spent a day mourning the loss of my level 17 deep dwarf necromancer, who had a staff of death, which combined with level 16 necromancy made him able to kill most anything in the game I had encountered. Died to one of my uber-powerful ghosts.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea to focus on, but it also means you'll be playing mainly for mid and late game. I do the same thing, and so when I say "all my characters have been consistently over leve 15," what I really mean is "all the characters I remember have been consistently over 15." When you play for mid-late game, there are going to be a lot of characters that just end up dying on level 2 or 3. Luckily for me this only takes a few minutes (auto-explore is your friend) for each character.

Doubled my best score. Was knowingly running around with a -2 -1 bow because I couldn't find anything better. Had I known that quarterstaff was so good, I might have used it instead of just saved it for the resistances. I got myself overloaded/slowed and swarmed while recovering from rage, I should have been more picky in carrying things.

I killed 3 of my ghosts this time as well. :)

Azier_Mordan you might find it useful to select which skills you want to train instead of training them all. press m to turn them on and off. Untrained skills still get 1/4th of the training you'd get otherwise.

On floor 4, I found Terence and a castle full to the brim with gnolls and jackals. I ran out of arrows after shooting so many of them (27 gnolls and 19 jackals), and ran out of health potions after trying to kill them in hand-to-hand combat with an elven falchion. Every time I entered the castle though, there were at least three more gnolls and two jackals waiting for me there. I would run away into a narrow corridor, then kill them off one-by-one. After this I would hide in the corner and regenerate, then repeat. Until an ogre killed me after some gnolls pounded my little fleeing elven butt. Has anyone noticed this castle with seemingly limitless amounts of gnolls and jackals?

Also, the advice people are posting here is very helpful, I'm working on a sludge elf venom mage right now because my friend had good luck with it. I'll selectively focus on certain skills next time I'm on.

Really awesome run. Was kinda at the point again where i felt going down was problems, and was worried about going farther into either the lair or swamp(plus my vegitarian mutation that i got from a potion was causing food troubles) so i went to try the orc mines and hit a shaft that dropped me 4 floors into the middle of a mob. Hit invis and tried to live but couldn't make it.
