No, really, they made one -- and it's quite a beast. They are apparently making another one too, after a long hiatus from the market, to compete with the Porsche Cayenne.

Machine: Lamborghini LM002

Lamborghini's little-known SUV was years ahead of its time. Check out its incredible specs.

October 22, 1999

In yesterday's letters page, I posted an email from Pablo who asked me to do a feature on "the butt-ugly Lamborghini truck." That got me thinking. Not many people know about Lamborghini's LM series of Hummer-style trucks that were produced in the early 80's, so I thought I'd talk about them today.

The first of the LM series, the imaginatively-named LM001 was created in 1981 as a prototype model. Featuring a 4.7 liter rear-mounted engine that walloped out a meaty 382 horsepower, the truck was no slouch. However, testing revealed that the front end was too light and ultimately didn't give enough control for serious off-road use, so the machine never went into full production.

However, the problems encountered with the LM001 enabled the Lamborghini designers to learn from their mistakes, and the LM002 that was produced just a year later was fully sorted and entered full production. Packing a truly insane 450 horsepower 5.2 liter V12 engine derived from the awesome Countach, the four wheel drive, 6,800 pound LM002 was an incredible performer. It could tackle gradients of 120%, was capable of shifting from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds and rushed to a top speed of 130 mph. All this performance had its cost though -- the engine returned a wallet-busting (and ozone-depleting) seven miles per gallon (gulp!).

The thing that's really interesting is that back in the early 80's, SUV's were seen as true utility vehicles and lacked the refinement and sophistication of today's trucks. The LM002 featured a passenger area composed of leather and wood inlays, and packed power steering, power windows and air conditioning as standard options, making it light years ahead of the competition.

A new version of the LM002, the LMA was produced later on in 1982 and was designed primarily for military use, featuring uprated suspension, chassis and steering and sporting the most sophisticated radio and satellite equipment available at the time.

The final LM, the LM004 arrived in 1986 as a design concept. Designed purely for non-military consumers, the truck featured a 7.0 liter engine (that was eventually used to power offshore racing boats) and had similar power and performance specs to the LM002. However, due to spiraling costs, it never made full production.

By the end of the 80's, Lamborghini refocused its efforts solely on producing supercars, and the LM was resigned to the history books, where it largely remains forgotten. A shame, really, considering that it was one of the first true luxury high-performance SUV's to ever hit the market.

I've got a book with a bit about this car, it's quite interesting. Most of them went to Oil barons in the middle east.

I like living here because the cars are so big, and I have 7 people in my family. The cars in Europe just can't hold that many people. And our car gets good mileage even being big, something like 20 miles to the gallon I think.

7 miles to the gallon.

For some reason, I'm embarassed.

Tanis: Cars here can fit plenty of people without being able do drive over the ones in front of them.

They're also dead. That tends to make it easier to pack them in like that; if they were still alive, then they'd be squirming around quite a bit and I imagine that that would be uncomfortable.

I've been there -- the reason you have small cars is twofold. First, many cities in Europe are so old and have so many historic buildings and infrastructure that it's just not possible to cope with masses of large cars.

Second, the government taxes the hell out of gasoline, making it so expensive to drive anything larger that people just don't do it. The generally good public transportation systems are present as well.

You have what you have because of history and government intervention. Neither is necessarily a bad thing, but please, don't try to tell us that what you have there is because of what the people want. It's socially engineered.

Welp, everyone has their opinion. I've used a number of excellent public transportation systems in countries all over the world. In large cities with closely packed people, they are wonderful. I mean there really is just no other practical way to go about it.

However, do I take a bus here in Rochester? Hell no. I much prefer being able to hop into my car when I want, not waiting for a schedule, not being packed in next to everyone and their brother, being able to listen to my radio, go where I want to go, when I want to.

As for the cars being nicer, I'd disagree. A lot of the very small cars I've driven in various countries in Europe and Asia scare the crap out of me. A nice high speed collision and you're just done for... but on the plus side (?) getting up to speed in a lot of these cars isn't that easy anyway.

Meh. I'd take the escalade and then sell it for a decent education.

If they worked at it, they might have a high-end competitor to the H2.

The main reason that you don't use the bus is that American public transportation, to be short, sucks. Unless you're in a top-10-sized city, you can't get anywhere without an unacceptable amount of walking/car driving just to get to a stop. If you had an effective subway/bus system, trust me, your car would rot in the garage.

But this is America, where we can waste land and fuel like nothing else, so my 'if's will never be more than 'if's.

More use of public transportation obviously makes life easier for those who have to use the car - less traffic jams and such - and does a good job reducing polution in the cities. Sometimes it's also faster for me to use a combination of train and bus then to take the car, like when going to school.

But to build up a system so efficient that people chooses it instead of their own comfortable cars would never be profitable for a company. The low prices that would be required wouldn't be very profitable either, I think. The only way as I see it is to have the government help fund alot of it, wich equals higher taxes, and high taxes leads to evil communism and is nothing for americans! Gaargh!!
