I have finally installed classic on my computer. Took me a year to find the cd but I found it stashed in an unspeakable location. Now then, does anyone play starcraft over the internet?
God 2.0
I hope you did not spend that year searching for Classic because you wanted to play Starcraft.
Starcraft IS OSX native now you know..
NebuchadnezzaR
Classic as in not brood war. And yes, I do. I am Qist on USeast. I usually play BW, but have no reason to discriminate.

Are you serious? You mean to tell me I have spent a whole year searching for that blasted cd and now its mac os native? How might I ask?
The Apple Cøre
My Starcraft/Battle.net info is in my "Interests" section.

Also, I do not sit idle on Battle.net, so you will need to either PM me or find me in #att.
Boris Yetskins
I feel shame...
Modesty Blaise
I play when I have time, but I need a new mouse.
Mine sticks half a second when I click the right mousebutton, so my micro is screwed.

I am Modesty at the European gateway btw.

I haven't played StarCraft online for a while, especially since the stupid school network blocks lots of ports.

Blizzard needs to put WOW down for a while and give us StarCraft 2.

And it seems that Blizzard is going to great lengths on their website to keep StarCraft: Ghost shoved under the table. It's not even on their "under development" list, and if you somehow search Google and find their website about it, it's very vague and all links on it lead to the main Blizzard page.
Boris Yetskins
I hate to be an idiot but is there a cd thats mac osx native or what?
Croikle
Use the link to the OSX Native Installer on this page. It installs from your old Starcraft CDs. Of course, you'll want to go to battle.net and update after the install, but you already knew that.

Enjoy!
Fnoigy
I wish the carbonized version had more efficient coding. It's annoying that it takes up 100% of the CPU and heats Zergling II up to 140 degrees.

That's because it's not under development; Blizzard announced a while ago that's it's indefinitely suspended.

I'm now running odds on whether we'll get Duke Nukem Forever or Ghost first...

They should really just bite the bullet and make Starcraft 2. Oh, and everyone knows they're currently making Diablo 3, which will probably just be a WoW clone, and it's release will be based on whether Blizzard think it's worth running two MMORPGs.
God 2.0
I can play Broodwar to "some" extent, but not regular Starcraft.

Starcraft 2 is not needed yet, considering Broodwar still is one of the most played RTSes in the world, along with War3.
TheLoser
I really wish they weren't making D3, D2 has classic, pixely goodness.
Boris Yetskins
When did this happen?

Personally, I was pissed when they picked WarCraft over Diablo to form the background of the MMORPG. I'd still love a Diablo-themed game.
Modesty Blaise
I have just got a new favourite unit.
The allmighty science vessel. While I am still learning to play terran, I have just discovered the wonderful cloud of death this fantastic sphere can deal out at will.

I am struggling with the mirco, but they are still fantastic and really funny.
There is nothing like watching an ultralisk run around and kill all zerg troops around it.

Me too, actually. But more because I enjoyed the Warcraft universe as an RTS, and wanted it to stay that way.

I play Brood War on Battle.net… I'll see if I can find my original Starcraft CD.
Boris Yetskins
I have downloaded the software update. Took about 30 minutes. Now then, what time are you all usually on?

Actually, Blizzard is not that dumb. Blizz has never developed content for two games at once in the same genre... You can see that just from their RTSes (Warcraft->Warcraft II->Starcraft->Warcraft III). It's all quite sequential. And you know that Blizz won't even think about Starcraft 2 until no one sells computers anymore which can't play Warcraft 3 at 90 fps with all the graphics settings turned on max. They're very careful about not competating with themselves.

Therefore, I think Diablo 3 is still going to be in much the same genre as Diablo 2. And for that I'm glad. I don't want it to be an MMORPG, because not only do MMORPGs make great sacrifices in terms of storytelling, gameplay, etc. etc. in order to be MMO, but everything that *is* MMO doesn't make the game a single bit more fun for me. All MMOs really do is eliminate the game list full of "Baal runs" or somesuch stuff (instead you just get people spamming chat) while tacking on a monthly fee which is ridiculously high.

I've played WoW, been addicted to it, and now I'm through with it. It's just not worth it, and for me no MMO is.

...

Oh, yeah, Starcraft on OS X. I play every so often as Captain Clod, but mostly I just do lurker defense. I'm too terrible at the actual game for the average good player to tolerate me, and too well too join the stupid 7vs1comp$$$$$OMG maps.

I enjoy the Phantom maps... Has anyone else played those?

I always made such a good job of convincing the other players to fight against each other when I was the phantom that, by the end of it, I only ever had to kill off 2 opponents which was easy enough...

Ahh good times ^^

I like The Thing the best. I can't compete with other people, as I can only win on big money maps, no rush maps, or 7v1 comp stomp cheap thingys (morale booster) tongue.gif

What is a rush map?
Phyvo
No-rush maps are maps in which none of the players attack any other player for an allotted period of time, so that they can build up their forces. It's a newbie thing. They usually need the special map I guess in order to enforce the rule.

Rush maps, on the other hand, generally are tiny with the players fairly close together or even right next to one another. They are small enough that Terran players can take advantage of the fact that their construction units (SCVs) are better fighters than the other races' (something that doesn't really affect a normal game too much).

I just realized I mispelled "competing". Ouch...
Modesty Blaise
No rush sounds weird. If you are up against an opponent with a similar skill level then there is no way a rush could kill you right away. That is if you scout and build well.

A rush map sounds ok actually. Sounds like intensive micro training.
Though zerg or terran might have an advantage.
Phyvo
That's why it's generally considered a newbie thing. Newbies get owned by better players who actually have a significant number of units to attack with in 15 minutes when the newbie isn't ready to attack anything yet. In general, inexperianced players like to see a big clash in a game and do so by trying to "mass" things, i.e. 400 zerglings or 30 carriers. They then point an click, for the most part, and watch the pretty lights. That's also the logic behind "money" maps, which by having so many resources lying around allow you to do all that much faster even if you're not that good.

Average players don't really do "no-rush" games, since they've come to grips with the fact that the other person is allowed to start trying to kill you as soon as he wants.

There are good and bad variants of that map...
God 2.0
Also, the player that has left the beginner stage has understood that the resource field is the main target of any attack force, and thus his defences should be placed in the resource field and/or in choke points.

I remember in my earliers games when I would blindly charge a terran block with everything I had against impossible odds, when a small drop-force could easily have performed amuch better attack.
The Apple Cøre
Heh.

A nuke would do just as well, provided you could keep out of tank range.
_tycho61uk_
I wouldn't mind playing that again. If you guys if want a game sometime, I would be interested (I play Zerg) smile.gif
The Apple Cøre
I believe this warrants an IRC channel.

Great. Another dying corner of the Web I get to command...
Boris Yetskins
What IRC channel will that be?
The Apple Cøre
Oh, right. #starcraft on irc.ambrosiasw.com/6667
Modesty Blaise
Come on people. I am sitting idle in #starcraft all the time.
The Apple Cøre
Not *that* idle.

Newbie's guide to IRC.
Good OS X client.
Good OS 9 client.
Good universal IRC client.

Oh, and the server is irc.ambrosiasw.com.

Better OS 9 + OS X client

Not many people in there right now :-/

Yay, Starcraft. I just reinstalled using the really nifty OSX Installer, what a blast.

Does anybody know whether the Carbon version of Starcraft will get fooled by disk images like the Classic version did? The game seems to never spin down the CD when it's in the drive, it's friggin' loud!
God 2.0
You can use disk images without any problems.
The Apple Cøre
You cannot, however, use battlecruisers without any problems.

BCs are pretty difficult against carriers as they are too slow. The carriers can just harass you to death ignoring your BCs.
They are ok on island maps or in 4+ player FFA, but in a normal TvP you'll never see them.

The only matchup where I have seen consistent use of BCs, is late game TvT. Which I think is a very strategiv and fun mathup, but no one wants to play it with me.. sad.gif sniff.

I am currently on vacation, but will be back tonight. If anyone want a game I'll try to hang out in #starcraft.
I play terran and toss mostly.

Oh, you don't like my gols? Have some wraiths. And some lockdowns. And a nuke while you're locked down.
Hint: hotkey your comsat stations. You don't want to be scrolling while your fleet is getting wraithpwn'd.

You, Sir, just made me aware of the fact that there is a hotkey function. Thank you. I feel dumb now.

Im a warcraft guy myself, but just the other day I found my old starcraft broodwar.

Woah.

The two are so different. Two years ago when I started playing warcraft, I failed so much because I was playing star craft all the time, now that I found my old cd, I can't even beat the computer at the custom games. The two have two entirely different resource mechanisms, minerals=gold but are mined like wood, vespene gas=lumber but is mined like gold. Also the building(verb) is just plain different than WCIII. RoC is more simalar to starcraft, but I don't have that anymore.

Any way, Starcraft was great, probably better than WCIII at first, but warcraft has just been the back bone of blizzard's updating schemes, (and I personally like the graphics on WCIII better than starcraft:P)
