Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer for the Nintendo Wii. Sadly, the game won't be a launch title (see the

Snake's debut was on the NES, remember. He's not Sony-exclusive; never has been. But I'm curious how his gameplay will work; the only guns in SSB Melee fired energy blasts, not real bullets.

He'll have a dartgun, and maybe a bladed weapon. Plus his ninja-skills, of course.

I believe word is that Kojima practically begged them to put him in. He was going to be in Melee (along with Sonic), but there wasn't enough time. It's a good bet that Sonic
will be in this one.

Most likely. I doubt they'd only put 5 new characters in.
In Japan, Nintendo's actually taking a survey of the characters people want in there, and from what I've seen, Sonic is probably the one that the fans most want to be in there.
Which means he'll probably be in there.
The announcement for this game came with a few disappointments though. It's not going to be a launch title anymore, and it doesn't support that fancy-pants motion sensing stuff.
But it'll still kick. Serious. Ass.

I believe it will, however, be playable with the "default" Wii controller, which implies some use of motion sensing because it doesn't have enough buttons to play games in the "normal" way. Anyway, being later just means it will be better and there are already a ton of great launch titles - Zelda, Red Steel, etc.

Chrono would be awesome. As well as Frog... And maybe a Chrono map with portals, in an attempt to hark back to their time-traveling adventures?
Oh, and this version better have freaking Sonic/Tails. And King DDD. I mean, they put in freaking MetaKnight, so why not the big penguin?

Snake was the big bombshell for that promo video. No point in having too many shocking announcements per video; you want to save some of your thunder for when you're closer to releasing the game. My bet is that Sonic & Tails will be the last set of new characters to be announced, shortly before the game is on shelves.

Apparently Red Steel's not quite up to all the hype yet. The graphics aren't as good as they promised and the gameplay is kind of wonky (which doesn't necessarily mean anything, it's not out yet after all).

Have you watched the videos? There is nothing to complain about when it comes to the visuals. The lighting is beautiful, impressive shader effects are plentiful (see: wet cobblestone reflecting an explosion), and the animation is really impressive in its fluidity. The only reason a lot of Wii games are looking a bit unimpressive is until quite recently the dev kits
were basically GameCube dev kits. Developers haven't had much time to grow into the actual capabilities of the system. Gameplay does need some work, according to what editorials I've read, but it's not really a disaster. Just needs some tweaking, and the controller is amazingly accurate.

The end of that video...with Wario...is highly...umm...interesting...
Samus is officially...uh...not sure what to think of that outfit. Probably stems from not having played any of her games. Will the new Samus be like Zelda/Sheik?
As long as the Ice Babies are back, I'm pretty much happy, though one more non-clone Pokémon would be good I think.
Now, to actually...you know, get the system.
Yay.

I'm not so sure. Right now I'm assuming they're keeping all their old characters because for whatever reason somehow SSBM caught on with those who like higerlevel play(teir lists, frames, wave dashing, etc.) so keeping characters is a good thing(on this note I can't wait to see supers for marth and roy.) Now they announced snake at E3 which is quite possibly the last character I would've guessed to be in the game mainly because if you told most people they'd call you nuts and say he's a Sony only character and so there's no way nintendo could use him. This is mainly why I am hoping like hell that we only saw a few of the new characters and there's probably still going to be a couple of announced ones plus seceret characters who we won't know about until release. PLEAAAAAAAAAASE CHRONO. Frog or magnus would be nice but come on.

I keep hearing how it seemed liked they had a lot of different versions of the game around. Given that the stuff in the video wasn't pre-rendered, and Ubisoft's demo at the Nintendo keynote looked good, I still have high hopes.

Oh, me too. What worries me is the gameplay quirks, not the graphics.
Honestly I wouldn't care if the graphics weren't top-of-the-line as long as the game itself was fun.
I'd much rather they focus all their remaining time on the gameplay and not do anything to the graphics (even if they aren't up to expectations), than spend time on the graphics at the expense of the gameplay.
(And thus I say the exact same thing in 3 different ways.)

Note the bump, incidentally.
I'm fine with people getting new movelists, though it was interesting to see how different, e.g., Captain Falcon and Ganondorf are, despite sharing the same moves. Other clones were rather more subtle (Fox/Falco, Link/Young Link) and played a bit too much the same for my tastes.
I trust the Smash Bros. teams to keep things exquisitely balanced. They did fair with the first game, and very well with the second.
Eji1700
Jun 2 2006, 01:13 AM
Eh the whole thing is still topical so the bump isn't really bad.
As for balance I think melee was good but some characters need some help. Kirby got the everyloving hell knocked out of him with a neft stick. He went from possibly best to near worst. Bowser was just hard to play with also. As for some of the characters leaving pichu is at the top of the list and yeah they're trying to make characters more individual. No matter how good ganon was he shouldn't really be a CF clone. Oh and theres talk of ridely and geno being in the next game...along with 5million other characters but it seems like they have a good chance. Should be really fun.
Anaxagoras
Jun 2 2006, 09:44 AM
If Ridley's in the next one, all is good. And... Ganon better get his own moves. I was disappointed in the fact that he was simply a powered-up, slower version of Captain Falcon.
Derakon
Jun 2 2006, 12:12 PM
A powered-up, slower version that played completely differently. Both characters were fun to play, for entirely different reasons. Which isn't to say that I wouldn't mind Ganon getting his own moves.
I'll grant that Bowser is a difficult beast to handle, though. Almost all of his attacks have significant start-up lag, leaving him open.
The trouble I'd see with Ridley being in the game is that he's twice as big as Bowser, and he flies (I don't think I've ever seen Ridley doing anything on the ground, outside of the boss fight in Metroid Prime). I don't think he's a good fit. Though granted, at least he isn't Kraid.
Eji1700
Jun 2 2006, 02:02 PM
The argument for ridley is that although he's supposed to be huge they'd probably shrink him down to bowser size or maybe a little bigger for the game.

Although this would add a unique twist to playing him, if one had to be in the air to make the best use of his attacks.
I don't think Ridley would be a good fit for a playable character though...perhaps as a boss however...
Don't forget the adventure mode they had in Melee...they could have a lot of "boss" type characters that you could only fight against and not play as and thus include of lot of cameos in this one, giving people even more reason to not always play multiplayer.
Whether or not any of that happens, however, who knows. As long as it's still a lot of fun to just pick up and play, I'll be happy.

Jun 3 2006, 02:00 PM
Get them separated, beat up on the blue on. Smash both; the blue one will fly further; run up and slap the pink, then hit the blue again. This should keep them from getting back on stage.
Sometimes that only works in theory...Squall Hammer can get them back together quickly.
Ice babies!!! They better be in SSBMB or I will bite someone.

That wasn't so bad as long as you had an actual three-or-more-player brawl going, because the person abusing the move is stationary and only slowly racking up damage. For duels, sure, it's broken.
I'm hoping we'll see less of an emphasis on sword-wielders, as there were too many last game. But seeing as Meta Knight, Pit, and Samus
all appear to be using sword-like weapons, I suppose I'm doomed to disappointment.
Eji1700
Jun 15 2006, 03:20 PM
Like I said I have a feeling that if they follow their balancing from the last game we can expect everyone who's in top tier to fall hard and fast. I doubt they'll have the any of the same imbalances. Kirby is of course the perfect example. In the first game he was awesome...too much so. In the second game they took EVERYTHING he had. All he was left with was a good recovery and a decent down B. My only question is if they will incorperate wavedashing or rip it out.
Derakon
Jun 15 2006, 03:54 PM
I've never been fond of "secret techniques" like wavedashing, or, in the Mario Kart series, snaking. I'm borderline on cancelling attacks/falls, even, but since they're easier to pull off they seem like less of "secret abilities" than wavedashing et al. In my opinion, everything you can do in the game should be easily presented and not require undue mechanical skill to pull off.
Now, snaking in the Kart series has survived through multiple iterations, and as I understand it, is meant to reward risk-takers (since when you're snaking, you're perpetually almost out of control). However, wavedashing is different, since, as I understand it, there's basically no risk involved. It's just an "uber" skill that those with sufficient know-how and manual dexterity can do. It's like (warning: tangent) how Konami "balanced" the Soul Steal spell in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night by requiring an absurdly complicated button combination for it to be cast (Forward, back, down-back, down, down-forward forward, back, attack). Guess what? The spell was still broken (for reference, it returned up to 72 health per enemy on-screen and dealt significant damage to all enemies; there are no other all-range or healing spells in the game); it was just uncastable unless you had the button skills to pull it off.
I'm all for timing in the sense of choosing when to strike, but timing in the sense of pulling off moves is not in my good books.
Eji1700
Jun 15 2006, 04:12 PM
The real problem i have with wave dashing is that combined with other techniques it becomes extremely evil. I've seen vids of a falco screaming across a stage in jump kick after jump kick by using wavedashing and L canceling, or the lovely chain throws, or basically making any character who can't really wave dash(most of the larger ones) even lower on the tier list. If i have one prediction for the game it's of bowsers great vengance as a top tier monster

That's actually not only cool/funny/awesome, but completely possible. You could have it change into other blocks for different attacks, and their smash attack could be making a row of blocks appear and explode.

I'm going insane. I probably can only get one next-gen console this year, and it's not going to be the PS3.
And Tetris blocks? That's an interesting concept. You could change into different blocks, and have something like a powerup that makes blocks fall from the sky and latch onto you for special powers or something.

All they have to do is twist Square Enix's collective arm until they get licensing for Cloud Strife, and they'll have all but won the next-generation war against Sony

.
In all seriousness, the game looks very, very cool. I don't think I'd mind a Golden Sun character, but it's those really far-out characters (like Mr. G&W in Melee) that really make you shake your head, smile, and think 'only Nintendo'.

All the Melee characters return. Except maybe Pichu.

At least one more Pokémon-possibly Hitmonchan or...heh...Eggsegutor(sp) That'd be fun...
Better tournament system.
Even-More-Ridiculously-Inclusive trophy system.
More Minigames and Event Match-type games.
Marth is Kirby-ized; Bowser is made awesome.
And other things that I havn't thought of but want.
Of course, I need a Wii first.
