Full Version: Wiretap feature requests

Wiretap is great, I used it to record from my Radioshark, and when Howard Stern moved to satellite I plugged in my Sirius and use it for that too.

Anyway, here are some features that I would dearly love to see added:

- Allow hiding of wiretap so that it doesn't un-hide when recording begins.
- Allow setting of artist, album, when adding to iTunes*
- Failing the above, then some notes on how to use the applescript post processing feature.
- Make aac bookmarkable <--- just noticed this has been done. Great!
- Accelerated recording**

* It is relatively easy to do this by modifying the applescript in the wiretap package. But this is overwritten when upgrading to new versions of wiretap and is only for people who know aplescript. This is really the only reason I ask for the applescript post processing info: if I run an applescript I need a handle on the file that has just been created so I can do some processing on it. How do I get that?

** Total Recorder on the PC does accelerated recording: e.g., I can point it at a real audio stream and it plays it back silently while recording at many times normal speed. Super, super useful.

Thanks for the feedback. They are all great suggestions. Some of them are on the to-do list for WireTap Pro 2.0. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when WireTap Pro 2.0 is released.

To get the path to the most recent recording:
CODE
tell application "WireTap Pro"
      set mostRecent to saved path
end tell

If you need further help with this let me know.

WireTap Pro records the audio as it is being played by the system, so this isn't possible. WireTap Pro is a general purpose recording program that can be used to record anything you hear. It is not tailored to record just internet streams.

Thanks for the reply, I'm really looking forward to 2.0

Total recorder has the same function: a general purpose system sound recorder - although the architecture might be different so that 'accelerated recording' is not possible. It installs a custom sound driver to capture the system sound. Most players leave it up to the driver to control the timing of the playback, so if the driver requests more information, maybe for 'buffering', the application just provides it. A very, very useful option for some types of recording (i.e. internet streams, not mic-in)

If Wiretap Pro offered this, hell, I'd buy it again :-)

dry.gif I wonder if you would really add the feature we request...

Well for what is worth I'd like to see Wiretap live up to its name. What happened to phone conversation recording? There are several options to record SIP calls placed or received via Skype, but what happened to the good old phone wiretapping?

The application is missing the main feature from which its name came from! Wiretap should be able to get audio input through the modem! An RJ11 phone line jack (whether coming from a traditional landline or a VoIP adapter) can be connected to both a phone and the modem, so that each time the phone rings or gets picked up to place a call, the call recording can automatically start, while when the phone has been hung up the recording will stop and the recorded file can be archived to be accessed when needed.

I need to record my own phone conversations and to be able to store them as compressed audio files.
Such feature would be very helpful for keeping all the ideas coming out during brainstorming calls, plus would be a great tool to cut loose from stickies and all those random small pieces of paper where number and info have been written on a hurry. It would be already a great step forward if Ambrosia would actually release wiretap with the mentioned capabilities, but what I'd really love is to see Wiretap become the real "Phlink" (http://www.ovolab.com/phlink/)
That's a wiretapping surrounded by tons of "phone central" features, but it has the unfortunate downside of having to get an additional USB phone adapter to be able to use the software. Additionally the whole Phlink system is not exactly a cheap solution not a fast and easy one to get up and running. In order to use many of the advertised features will be necessary to be a user with a mid-high technical skills in Apple scripting, which means that the application is not ready to go right after install.

So, dear Ambrosia Software team... there you have it! Make a "Wiretap Pro Deluxe" where current 2.0 features are expanded to rival Ovolab's Phlink ones (but without having to use extra hardware) and I'll buy it right away wink.gif

One more feature I'd add to my wish list...

- Podcasting - option to integrate wiretap recordings with podcasts in both iTunes, but especially on the iPod.

Thanks (hope these suggestions are useful),
Neil

Oh, and any sign of when Wiretap Pro 2.0 will be released?

Hello-
Thanks for the feedback.

I'm looking into a problem with phone recording and WireTap now. I have to get all of the connections straight so I can do some testing, but there has been some, though limited, success using WTP to record phone conversations.
