Anyone else here have fond memories over playing
bolo?
'Twas a great game, but I can't get it to work on my G4 (which is odd, because it has both OS X and OS 9.1). At school, lots of kids in my class would play Appletalk games on iMacs. Eventually, I downloaded it at home and started playing online.
My various stupid handles included Gorilla Guerilla, Unk in deep sea, and Grumpy. I think there's some sort of trend in there.

Yeah, I played a bit around 2001 and 2002. My favorite map was probably Washington DC because of all the walls that were there at the beginning allowed for you to easily build defensively. I liked it a lot more than all the symetrical maps that people always played.
Everard Island (the stock map) was also fun because of how varied the map was. Every base on the map required a different strategy to defend... it was great for huge open game free-for-alls.
Would be cool to set up a few Ambrosia board member games... I seem to recall there being an OS X port around somewhere, anyone have a link to it?

I thought your name looked familiar when I joined. I think I might have played a few games against you...maybe.

I used to play against my brother (never could win) and watch him play
with a friend of his ... curiously the latter was more fun

. More recently we did try playing a bit on XBolo, but no it isn't quite complete, and plays a little differently; I will have to try this NuBolo, cheers for that link.

I loved Bolo but I could only get the demo on those old mac arcade cds. Good times, good times. Incidentally, they also made me aware about escape velocity, thus leading me to the old escape velocity board a long time ago.

I learned about both bolo and EV at school. Bolo was much more popular. I started playing EV as a protest because nearly everyone abandoned bolo for Yipe III, which I hated. I've not stopped yet.
So, in a way, 664 of the posts on the Ambrosia Boards are due to Yipe III. Tripps should send a thank you card.

And, It would be fun to have a little halo newbie match sometime. I played a long long time ago, single player only. I had ton of fun with the map editor, I think that was my favorite part.

I'd be interested to hear how you guys get on with nubolo games over the 'net. My brother and I tried several times to get one going - once we managed about 10 minutes before it went out of sync and after that we couldn't even get it to start. In the 10-minute instance I was pleased because he had already left me for dead, but in general not being able to start is a bad thing ... any hints/tips?

... oh and good luck.

Rickton and I played a match-- it was about 30 minutes long-- ending at 4:20 PM PDT/7:20 PM EDT. Everything worked pretty well, but there was a little bit of lag.

Nice. Did you just use all the default settings - tracker and such? We tried setting up and then going manual join, tried with and without the tracker without success. Gonna have another go this evening, NZ time

Can classic Bolo connect to nubolo? I would like to take a crack at a game as well. I'll check in on IRC this afternoon to see if I can join up.

To my knowledge, the two can't connect, but nubolo can handle classic maps.
Unfortunately, I have a commitment at 7 PM EDT.

Download a client such as
XChat or
Colloquy. Set the server to irc.ambrosiasw.com, then type /join #ev3 (or whatever channel you wish to join).
IRChelp.org is a good resource to use if you still need help with something.
By the way, I'm not sure if people will be able to join me. I've got port forwarding set up for UDP port 50000, but I'm not sure if that'll work properly with Bolo's ring networking.

Tracker.
If you're having problems with the tracker...
Next to the fields, it says what the defaults are (why the fields are set to things besides the defaults, who knows). You need to set the values in the fields to the defaults for it to work.

XChat quits the moment I try to start it and Colluquy won't work on my computer. All I've learned is that computer experts, i.e. those on IRChelp.org, are notoriously bad at explaining anything more complex than, oh, making toast.

nuBolo has its bugs, I like teh original Bolo for what it is, but this'll work better.
