Full Version: Marathon v1.2 problems

Lord Rama
I'm playing Marathos v1.2 on my iMac. On the level Cold Fusion, in one of the halls with the half-open doors at the beginning of the level where you have to shoot grenades at the switches inside them to open the doors, there are two other doors (the white kind with the blue Marathon logo on it). One of them won't open (makes sense), and the other door freezes the game every time I try to. Anyone got any ideas?
Captain Bob
All 3 doors in a row should open; the middle door should lower to the floor, and the 2 outer doors should raise to the ceiling. Platforms can't be obstructed when they're opening, so that's not the problem...are you lobbing multiple grenades at the switch? You might be hitting it twice, so the second hit turns the switch off again. You don't have to open all the doors; if you can get 2 or 3 open without crashing, you can still get through the level. There's no need to try to open those doors with the action key, because it won't work. For a broader solution, I recommend M1A1, the conversion of Marathon 1 to the Aleph One engine. The team did a fantastic job with it; you should be able to find a download for it at fileball.

Oops, sorry, I meant after I open those doors with the grenades and walk in, there are the normal kind that you just walk up to and press "Tab" to open. Trying to open one freezes the game.

I'll try M1A1.

Here's a more comprehensive link: http://source.bungie.org/get/ and the latest version of the universal binary version: http://www.pfhorums.com/index.php?showtopi...niversal+binary

Basically you download a Marathon game plus AlephOne for your computer, and drop the AlephOne app into the game folder and use it to play. High res texture packs come with installation instructions, and seem quite awesome. Though it would be nice to see some improvements to the sprite resolution too.
Lord Rama
Thanks guys. M1A1 is awesome.

This might be the only "General Gaming" board in existence where the fact we have the game memorized enough to answer immediately isn't surprising biggrin.gif.

Rama said he's on an iMac, and since he can play original, uncarbonized Marathon, he must not be on an Intel iMac. Accordingly, I still recommend the PPC/NIBs version of Aleph One. I've been keeping track of what the Universal/SDL version can do, and while it's getting better, I still think NIBs has advantages.

The high-res textures are great, no doubt about it. I've been working on the Aleph One version of the E:MR mod, and while re-doing an entire monster class would take a ton of work, I've been slipping in high-res sprites here and there. Even though it's a 2.5D, sprite-based engine, it can still look beautiful with high-res graphics.

I have v1.2 running on my Centris in the other room. Aleph One (multiple copies for the trilogy) is on the eMac, as well as my ThinkPad. Also on the ThinkPad, I have Infinity under Basilisk.

M1A1 seems to have solved your problem. As for the other door, you'll be able to get through eventually. smile.gif

Got through and beat it. Thanks guys. On Marathon 2, but I'm stuck on the "6000 Feet Under" level.

I've gotten to the part at the top with a red circle around it and pressed the button, but I can't get to the are labelled "WTF?" The path leading to it is no help, as I can't get to the path.

EDIT: Wow, never mind, that was easy.
