What are some good freeware rpg/adventure-type games? With nice graphics, pc or mac. Single or Multi-player.

Battle for Wesnoth is okay. It's for PC and Mac, and open source.

Ambrosia should do a game like this -- I know they could do it better. However, until that time comes, BoW is a fine substitute.

One I'm currently interested in is Shadowbane. It's an MMORPG that got released as freeware for Mac and Windows.

Demo of Call of Duty 2 is entertaining for a while if you keep making it harder each time you beat it. The demo of Quake 4 is also nice, I haven't reached the end yet, but I haven't played for long yet. Oh yes, Halo demo. Those are all out for Mac, not sure about Windows. I have been on a "download the demo for all the mainstream FPS's I can find" spree.

For good graphics, those are the way to go, methinks. For worse graphics, there are all sorts of things to look at, and most of them aren't half bad. Example: EV Nova is all pre-rendered in less than perfect color quality, but look at it. It's not all that bad. In fact, it is one of the better looking games you can play on anything because it is pre-rendered sprites, meaning it doesn't get better looking, but on a slow computer it looks fine.

As TwoADay said, Battle for Wesnoth is a cool turn-based strategy game.

Planeshift – open-source MMORPG
xu4 – remake of Ultima IV (though it doesn't have great graphics tongue.gif)

Oooooh. I have xu4, but I haven't played it much. Is it worth my time?

Basically, all FPS games come out on Windows before Mac. So if it's on Mac, it will be on Windows. The Quake 4 demo is good, but I haven't beaten it because it decided to stop working a few months ago, and I can't fix it.

As far as I know, the only exception. (Except Marathon 2 & 3 of course.)
gray_shirt_ninja
Marathon 2 was the only one to get ported to Windows.

Here is a Wikipedia list of free first person shooters, if you are interested. Some are awesome, some suck. I am downloading Nexuiz as I type.

Here's the web site for a well made, retro, free, RPG released two or three years ago for a game-making contest. Low tech, but fun: it kept me busy for a day or two. It may not be for everyone, as it has an editorial point of view on religion.

Nexuiz is very fun, but all the servers that have a lot of people tend to be non-standard maps, and I can't seem to find a complete map pack anywhere.

Thanx for all the help guys, also HOMM is my favourite game ever. But that's kinda off-topic. Anyways, I might have forgotten to mention I has OS X 2.8 so games like nexuiz don't work sad.gif

i thought that too, but i checked it out and as it were they changed it so that you get just the demo, but you can register it for free, or something like that. at any rate, it's free.

EDIT: also, is planeshift gon' be up for intelmacs soon?

There aren't many freeware Mac RPGs that I know of, but as far as PC games go, a few of the RPG Maker 2000 games are good (and then there's stuff like this).

There are a bunch of free RPGs, including Sacraments, at RPGDX.net. Most of them are still in progress, many in fairly early development.

I would imagine that Planeshift will work relatively well in Rosetta.

You don't have to install Rosetta, it automatically works and you don't notice it, but apparently it isn't working in this case. If you've got a windows boot set up for your intelmac, then the windows version is probably your best bet.

nah, i don't have the drive space for that. i mean, i do, but really, i don't wanna sacrafice that much considering i started with only 80gigs, which translates to way less than 70 from the very beginning, i mean, yeah... maybe they'll get the intel version off the ground soon...

Cave Story. Make sure you also find its English patch. If you don't think it has good graphics, then you are a horrible person.

I doubt it. BfW is made by volunteers and has been in progress (well, the basic game is done but they simple keep on developing/improving) for quite a while now. And they have quite a few gifted participants. That's one of the graces of free software, actually. People can (but do not need) put in as much time as they wish.. and if a project is interesting enough, people will. I think BfW is very impressive.. and even if ASW tried they are not likely to be able match it in my opinion. Of course I won't claim it's impossible.

Anyway.. nice game.
