I'm looking for an fps, prefferably an air based one, or vehicle, for pc. Basically I want an fps that would play well on my joystick. Thanx!

P.S. I already have Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator, and Heroes of the Pacific

I didn't think what you're looking for fell under the genre "FPS", but you're kind of SOL for anything contemporary. The "games requiring joysticks" genre seems quite dead of late. The best space sims are Freespace 1/2 and X-Wing Alliance. The former is available as freeware, though I can't quite remember where an all-in-one download link is, and I had a lot of problems with the three or four files in the first post of that thread.

Edit: Fourth post on this page.

Edit #2: I can't begin to describe how awesome FS2 is. There's also a Mac version, though you will need to find the data files elsewhere. Freespace 1 is also good, and well worth playing through to get the amazing sequel with the proper story progression.

You might like Aximoatic. I don't know if it works with joysticks, but there is a free demo, so you could find out.

Hostile Waters: Anteus Rising isn't really an FPS, but a 3rd-person shooter with vehicles. A pretty good one at that, one of Interplay's last good games. It's kinda old, but should work fine. Dunno about joysticks, though.

Something in the Battlefield series?

If we're talking actual First Person Shooters (which are typically not played with a joystick unless you're a masochist or on an xbox), then AFAIK the choices with vehicles are UT 2K4, Halo, and the Battlefield series. Out of all of that, the only game I really like is Halo. (And I've played demos of the others.)

PC Halo has some really amazing multiplayer (that, dare I say it, I had a better time with than I ever did with big Halo 2 sys-link games, despite the inferior visuals) with huge and excellent vehicle-based maps and readily-available competition. Oh if only the lag-handling weren't total shit...
mrxak
Yeah, Halo kicks ass.
darth_vader
Yeah, Halo is a lot of fun. I don't really like Battlefield style games, but some people do. My main beef is that no on ever listens to the Commander.
mrxak
Yeah, I don't care too much for the Battlefields, but that is a game in which people tend to use joysticks more.

My problem with Battlefield 2 was the feel was just immensely unsatisfying and un-solid, and after messing around for hours I still couldn't really figure out how to play anyway. I like the idea of managing a mini war game, but all I could ever get out of the game was confusion, a constant lack of useful weaponry, and lots of downtime just running around, or getting repeatedly TKed for a plane (which are apparently impossible to fly).

Halo is definitely king of vehicular FPS's, despite the kludginess of the PC port. UT 2K4 is not un-fun, and the onslought mode is pretty sweet (not to mention the value of the game is amazing) but I found the base-game of the original UT to be a lot more fun.

Joysticks, eh? No wonder they're all jerks. tongue.gif

I could not agree more. I tried out UT2K3 and UT2K4, but the original was so much better.

I haven't played BF2, but I've put a ton of hours into 1942 and I have to say it's quite a good game. The plane (can't say I've ever had a problem flying any planes, but a lot of hours in X-Plane may have prevented that) TK issue is readily solved by playing on a decently managed server.

UT04's Assault and Onslaught gamemodes are quite a bit of fun, especially with voice chat, but my problem with the newer FPSs (all of them) is that the weapons just don't have that awesome punch that the old ones did. Why did they have to go and halve the number of rockets in the rocket launcher, stupify the flack cannon, or nerf the Redeemer?

Slightly off-topic, but I really miss Red Orchestra. Probably the greatest realism FPS ever made (adrenaline blacking was genius). I'm still really pissed that they moved to the shitty-as-hell Steam engine for distribution.

i rather enjoyed the Comanche sim serries.

Halo rules!

I've never played Battlefield, but I might rent it later. Battlefield 2142 looks awesome, but I can't play it on a Mac.

You're not missing much with 2142. It's like BF2, but in the future. Otherwise, exactly the same.

Eh? I can't think of anything wrong with Steam off the top of my head at the moment. It's goddamn convenient, and works like a charm.

I don't have a goddamn Windows PC. How about that?

Was there even a Mac version of Red Orchestra?

It was a generic UT04 mod, of course there was a Mac version (and a Linux version, too!).

Gone are the days of assuming a Mac userbase on here. I miss Avara. sad.gif
