My problem with Battlefield 2 was the feel was just immensely unsatisfying and un-solid, and after messing around for hours I still couldn't really figure out how to play anyway. I like the idea of managing a mini war game, but all I could ever get out of the game was confusion, a constant lack of useful weaponry, and lots of downtime just running around, or getting repeatedly TKed for a plane (which are apparently impossible to fly).
I haven't played BF2, but I've put a ton of hours into 1942 and I have to say it's quite a good game. The plane (can't say I've ever had a problem flying any planes, but a lot of hours in X-Plane may have prevented that) TK issue is readily solved by playing on a decently managed server.

I could not agree more. I tried out UT2K3 and UT2K4, but the original was so much better.
UT04's Assault and Onslaught gamemodes are quite a bit of fun, especially with voice chat, but my problem with the newer FPSs (all of them) is that the weapons just don't have that awesome punch that the old ones did. Why did they have to go and halve the number of rockets in the rocket launcher, stupify the flack cannon, or nerf the Redeemer?
Slightly off-topic, but I
really miss Red Orchestra. Probably the greatest realism FPS ever made (adrenaline blacking was genius). I'm still really pissed that they moved to the shitty-as-hell Steam engine for distribution.
