Okay, so I'm also looking for some Star Wars games tongue.gif.

I'm interested in hearing about any of the following:

Star Wars Battlefront
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
And perhaps any others that are playable on OS X PPC. I am already familiar with the KOTOR series, however.
Lizard
X Wing, TIE Fighter, and X Wing vs. TIE Fighter.

EDIT: Turns out XvT was Windows only. Dang. Anyway, the first two are the shiznit.
masterryan
Battlefront I & II: Amazing games, especially II. Worth any price.

Jedi Academy: Good game, but best for online multiplayer. The normal game was alright but the online gaming is best.

I would tend to disagree on that front. I found JA multi to have a fraction of the depth of gameplay of the single player. My friends and I were done with it inside a week, but I love to come back to the single player game from time to time. All in all, it's a goddamn great game, though I would recommend playing Jedi Outcast first if you haven't, because it has a more involving story, and JA has several very lousy levels. That progression should give maximum enjoyment, as opposed to the other way around, when you'll find yourself missing all the gameplay improvements from JK3.

As for Battlefront, I'd get II since I heard a lot of mixed reports about the first game.

The problem with all this is very few decent Star Wars games have been brought to PPC Mac lately. (X-Wing Alliance is by far the best of the combat sim games, and basically trumps XvT in every way, but of course was Windows-only.)
Dogbert
The first battlefront is a great game and so is jedi academy (my favorite star wars game). Also "the force unleashed" might be one to look into when it comes out if they make it for mac. If you decide to get jedi academy you might want to check out "jedi night 2 jedi outcast."
Ferazel-X
Lego Star Wars II is coming to the Mac.

Battlefront is awesome.

Okay, so Battlefront sounds like the thing to get, a lot of people seem happy about it. Give me some details though.
adam_0
You've never played on another system/console??? Well, there's a few modes: Galactic Conquest (SP), Instant Action (SP and MP), and Campaign (SP). For more details, visit the Battlefront site. It's a really great game. Battlefront 2 is amazing, but becoming decent at the first is essential to playing the second, which is about ten times more complicated.

You must not have done much lightsaber dueling, because Academy has some of the greatest multiplayer melee fun there is (right up there next to Savage). AIs just don't match up to dueling real people with lightsabers. I wish there were still some decent lightsaber-only CTF servers up . . . talk about a fun time.

Battlefront is freakin' awesome. It's a FPS, but instead of it being you as a super-badass against the world, it's you as a faceless grunt with your entire army. You play through a lot of famous areas from Star Wars (Hoth, Tatooine, Bespin, etc.), trying to capture and maintain command posts.

I've got it on my Xbox, and absolutely love it. The first one is outstanding, but the sequel outshines it (more complicated areas, playable heros, a damn good single-player storyline, space combat, etc.).

Fun trivia: MagnusAppollo and I are the shit when we tag-team like we did at NovaCon. Me driving the tank and him operating the turret? Oh hells yeah. wink.gif

That's all we do, because the game lacks any semblance of gun balance/fun that was present in #2. Yes, it's fun for a bit, but it seriously lacks any significant depth. There's a shortage of moves to shake it up, and the physics of saber fights I found far to be far more simplistic than single player.

If you want a Battlefront, get BF2. BF1 is OK, but the single player has no story, and 95% of the people on multiplayer are obviously 10-year-olds with no idea how to play. They're so bad it's not even fun to kill them repeatedly. In BF2, there are less atrocious people online, and the single player actually has a story. (And a pretty good one at that. It answered some questions I had about Kamino.) Most of the BF2 maps are also better, but Naboo is almost exactly the same, and the Geonosis map is worse.

Force Unleashed will be for consoles only. That really pisses me off. It'll be for the PS2, and the the DS (!!!) but they couldn't be bothered to make it run on a normal PC? I'm just gonna have to get a 360 this summer.

Just so we're clear, I'm interested in Mac games. Battlefront 2 is not yet ported, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, I discovered today that I already have a friend playing Battlefront and my roommate says he'll buy it too if it looks good, so I'm going ahead and buying Star Wars Battlefront.

Now tell me about this other game, Jedi Academy...

JA is... good, but not fantastic. JO would be the best Star Wars game in existence if not for KOTOR.

Yes. Play that first, then move on to Jedi Academy. JK2 has a far superior story and generally better level design. I would consider it a must-play. JK3 also has some amazing bits (even better than some parts of JK2), but the story is basically lame and some levels are terrible, but that is offset to some degree by the character-building element. It does make some significant improvements to graphics and gameplay, which you will miss in JK2 if you play them in reverse order.

Edit: While we're talking about Jedi Knight games, I just discovered the "Movie Battles" mod for JK3, which I'm eager to try once I can find a way to download it on this craptastic connection. I hear some people won't play multi any other way.
Eji1700
Jedi Academy is great because of the amazing number of cool cheats and mods.

Single player cheating = some of the most fun you can have. Since you can bind keys to spawn enemies and use no clip to fly anywhere you can basically create your own little battles. Like luke vs 10 reborn grunts(sorta the saber wielding storm trooper equivilent.) or you can change yourself into other characters and screw with that. Flying boba fett with lightsaber and force choke slaughtering storm troopers is always fun.

Single player and multiplayer mods: There's an absolute ton. Dismember mods so your saber actually will cut your opponent to bits. Different color sabers or different looks to them. Weapons mods so you have real swords instead of sabers or other strange weapons. Every type of level imaginable that sometimes are absolutly massive. One example is FFVII midgar. Also you can download and endless number of character skins ranging from the obscure to the neat to the rather strange.

I do however agree that you should play Jedi Outcast before academy. When you do I highly suggest you use the dismemberment cheat and you test the glitch i posted in the other topic. In fact i suggest that everyone with the game try that glitch.

The most notable difference between outcast and academy is that in outcast you have a single sided saber with 3 styles to switch between. Fast medium and slow(unless you cheat or get a mod to add more.) In Academy along with the sorta weak create a character they also added more moves to do with your saber and the option of having double sided and dual wielding saber styles.

JK3 is good, but I too would recommend JK2. Better story, a bit more variety in the gameplay, at least in my opinion. However you can have a lot more fun with the lightsabers in JK3. So get both wink.gif
mrxak
Give me some details on controls and stuff for the JK series.
darth_vader
The control set is slightly odd. You use the mouse to swing your lightsaber and control direction with the movement keys. This can make fighting on ledges a bit difficult, as you are liable to accidentally walk right off. The function keys control Force powers, and the number keys switch weapons, so that's all pretty standard. Most weapons have secondary fire, so the right mouse button does not throw grenades. You can get thermal detonators and select them as a separate weapon, however. Your powers are Push, Pull, Heal, Jump, Throw, Defend, Grip, Lightning, Rage, Protect, Absorb and Speed (that's a list from both games, and some of those are not in JO.) Push and Speed are definitely the best. You can knock over enemies, push them off ledges, and pin them to walls with Push, as well as push away grenades, and with Speed you become extremely fast and hard to hit, as well as being able to attack many more times per second.

Was there ever a demo for Jedi Knight 2 or JA?

There are demos for both available for Windows. I don't know about Mac, but chances are there would be.

mrxak: I insist you buy an Intel Mac to play Star Wars: Empire at War.

There are demos for both games for mac. Although the jedi outcast demo level is not in the game.

Edit: Both of those downloads are only updates so they may not have the demos anymore.

I second the suggestion for Empire at War, heard some very good stuff about it, and it looks good from what I've seen.

I bought Jedi Academy a while back, but never really got around to playing it. What little I did play was really good!

Empire at War is the best Star Wars RTS. However, it doesn't hold up against some other RTSs. JO holds up well to other 3rd-person melee games and first person shooters.
3dd13
there are demos for Mac, also.
LoneIgadzra
It probably should be mentioned that, while the saber combat in JK2 or JK3 could not be described as good, or balanced, or having depth, it was definitely very very fun.

Yeah, if BF2 was on Mac I'd have it wink.gif BF1 is alright, I personally prefer CoD2/RS on OS X or CS/BF2/BF2142 on Windows. However the Jedi Knight series is awesome, get both JK2 and JKA. It's very hard to be disappointed with light-sabers happy.gif

And that is ultimately what is important.

I've heard Battlefront 1 is kinda lame. However, Battlefront 2 has better vehicles/weapons/classes etc., but the AI is so horrifically dumb (hey, it IS a celeron processing it all). However, this actually ends up making the game rather fun at times, especailly when mowing down rows of your own team along with theirs, as they all just run in front of you. It's also fun to find some guy just standing off in a corner somewhere staring at a wall.

With the right addons and crud, JA is great.

Battlefront 1 was an absolute blast... until Battlefront 2 came out. The sequel blew the previous game out of the water in pretty much all respects (they sorta nerfed the super battle droids, though, which was my favorite in BF1; on the flip side, it did balance them a bit more). There are a couple of maps that I wish had been kept, but there are so many really good new maps that I can't complain about their absence too much (plus, several of them were brought back on Xbox Live).

Plus... holy shit, space fights and playing as Jedi/heros (Vader, Kenobi, the Fetts, Chewie...), especially the hero-only games... plus playing as wampas? ###### yeah.

The AI *can* be a bit dumb, but I've got friendly fire turned off, which eliminates that problem.

So, basically, BF1 only sucks in comparison to the sequel, which ultimately is what sequels are supposed to do.
Lektor
I played BF2 for a while, but got very annoyed at the space flight levels. I found them rather bad. Possibly after playing all the Rogue Squadron games to death, and considering them vastly superior to any other Star Wars flight games.

I did enjoy the other elements of it though.

I'd be happier if you could turn off the god damn autoturrets in the options, so you could have a pretty much straight dogfight match. My friend and I, when we play just vs. each other, will sabotage our own turrets just so they don't get in the damn way.

Star Wars Battlefront and Jedi Knight are both really fun games. But if your going to play any game online go with SOCOM Navy Seals, its the best.

Also, keep an eye out for Battlefront 3.

Actually, the web site just says "next generation consoles", which technically includes the Wii, and only lists a few token last-gen ones. It's way too early to bitch about this yet, since they haven't excluded it.

Though for a long time now I have been resigned to being disappointed by everything LucasArts does.
