Full Version: Snapz creating corrupt images

So, out of the blue a few days ago while creating a new screen shot, Snapz Pro stopped working properly. While I could create the screen shot, all image apps that I have (Preview, Adobe PS, ImageWell, Image Converter) stopped being able to read them. The specific error in Preview was "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."

Not sure what to do next, I've Uninstalled using the Uninstaller app and then reinstalled (although, it said "Upgrade" when I reinstalled, which makes me think the Uninstaller didn't do it's job).

Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm running this on a MacBook with 2gb of RAM, 120GB HD, no external monitor. I did recently start running Teleport, which I haven't tried uninstalling, but I run it on an Intel Mac Mini which also runs Snapz just fine.

Any help would be much obliged.

Cheers,
Randy Stewart

Hello,
Does this happen regardless of what format you choose? Try this:

1. Invoke Snapz and press command-Q to quit Snapz. If you can not invoke Snapz, open the Activity Monitor found in your Utilities folder. Look for a process named "Snapz Pro X", select it, and then select "Quit Process".
2. Remove the Snapz preference file "com.ambrosiasw.snapz.plist", which is located in the Home/Library/Preferences folder
3. Download the latest version of Snapz from the first link at http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/addons.html
4. Install Snapz. It should install over the old version, and you should not need to enter your registration info again.

It did fail no matter what format I chose, but your solution fixed it. Thank you so much for your speedy help.

Looks like I was wrong. I can only save images in the following formats: .gif, .pdf, and .pict. I had been using pict (as I think that saves in millions of colors with no compression) as my default format which has been working ok.

In addition to the strange error, I can see the images captured in all formats in the preview window in the column Finder view.

This morning, however, I was trying to capture some video and the video capture seemed to work, but the file created was corrupt and only 4k. Subsequently, the video capture seemed to work and the post capture dialog box claimed to save the document, but I can't find the file (neither where I designated the video to save nor with spotlight)

Also, the after capture screen (where you select compression, etc) would not allow me to change any of the settings and would only allow me to save.

Help would be much appreciated. I use this tool almost every day and will be starting more video projects soon.

Hello Randy,
This should be a very rare occurrence. But if any changes are made to the codecs available to QuickTime, either through upgrading QuickTime, or installing third party software that includes codecs, QuickTime may need to be explicitly told which codec to use to save out the movie.

3. Reboot your machine
4. Invoke SnapzProX 2 and record a short movie file. When you get to the Save Movie dialog, click on the Settings button next to the video track. Change the compression codec selected to any of the others available. Click on OK, and then click on Save.
5. After this is done, you should be able to use any of the codecs.

There is a bug in Apple's H.264 codec as well. If you choose this codec, do not use keyframes! Please let us know if you have further problems.

So, I just did that, but to no avail.

As I mentioned, I can't select codecs of any kind. as when I click "settings," it does nothing. The button depresses, but no dialog box appears. I am able to click "save," and while images appear in the preview box, no file appears once this completes.

Also, I still can not save an image in .jpg, .tiff, or .bmp formats.

Thanks again for any insight you may have in this.

Any ideas? I'm thinking of doing OS X clean install to eradicate any cruft from the system that might be causing these problems, but I'm really not keen on spending an entire afternoon down.

Hey Randy,
I agree, clean installs are never much fun! You can try creating a new user account on your system and giving it a try in there. It sounds like something deeper than Snapz. Best of luck to you smile.gif
