Full Version: iMovie '08 and Snapz Pro Video Capture: Movies are black

I am capturing video at 1024 x 768 with SnapzPro to make a movie tutorial for an upcoming presentation. I am using Mousepose to highlight the cursor on the page. I imported the .MOV files from SnapzPro into iMovie 08 and then added my screen caps and transitions. I have "shared" (exported) using every setting possible with QT and Movie and I cannot get anything more than a black canvas with my screen caps appearing and disappearing as they should. No screen capture shows up.

Any thoughts on this? I am needing to start this project so I can present this in front of people and it looks too good in iMovie 08 to just give up.

TIA

So no one knows why FCP, iMovie 08 can edit these files natively? I read the FCP tutorial about coverting the file and that is just out of the question since it took a 3 mb file and blew it up to 1 gb! Unreal.

I was hoping the Ambrosia people can offer some assistance here on this. I need iMovie 08 and Final Cut Pro compatibility.

Hello Wizkid,
Sorry for your frustration. Unfortunately our support for Final Cut Pro and iMovie are going to be somewhat limited. We will try to reproduce the issue here. Can you please tell us what export settings you used? Is it possible to supply us with some of your clips?

Ok. I can send you guys whatever you want or upload it for you to download. It is pretty simple. I do a capture

Animation
10 frames per second
Keyframe every 500 seconds
Best depth
Medium quality

No audio track, just video.

Then import into iMovie.

Then share in iMovie using any of the basic settings.

You will have the same problems as me, I assume. When I get home, I can give more information. What email should I send it to?

Hello,
No need to send anything. We get the same here. The movies appear fine only until exporting. As iMovie '08 gives us NO options when exporting, there doesn't seem to be an alternative. I'll see what we can come up with around here.

I've been told it's an Apple bug and affects only the Animation codec. Try switching to another codec. I also just received a software update from Apple about QuickTime compatibility with iLife apps. I wonder if this fixes anything? I have not tested it out yet. Let us know what happens!

How do you change the codec?

When you are finished recording you'll see the Movie Saving Settings. Here you can click on Settings next to the video track and change the codec / compressor. Hope this helps smile.gif

Hello Tom here... long time reader, first time poster. I too have struggled with the whole Snapz Pro editing deal. The whole imovie conversion to DV really kills the quality of the video. moving to Final Cut Express or Pro is a good option, HUGE LEARNING CURVE and it requires converting the video and is a real pain in the butt. I just wanted to add a few titles and ending credits...not a big deal. I was willign to learn FCE to get my job done but what a find...

Okay ... okay..not sure where I found this but it works..works like a champ. if you are looking just to add simple titles to your Snapz pro movies...look no further... Apple Keynote in iWork 08 suite. May work in earlier versions of keynote, but I have not tried it. What I did was easy. SO easy--just make a keynote slide the same dimensions are your QT move... Do this by opening the inspector and changing the document size to the size of your movie... for sake of argument lets say 1024x768. You can add slides before and after the move for opening and closing titles -even have transitions between the titles and your movie. I even superimposed our logo over the movie and was able to set colors to transparent to give it a good effect.

lets just say it rocks... but don't take my word for it..look for yourself on my website for work all the movies were "enhanced via keynote. Once your movie is the way you like it, just export as a quicktime movie and make sure to select Fixed Timing under the Playback Uses area. Also I set the keyframe to 300 and my movies are much smaller then they were before.

I hope this helps...

Apple has a free 30 day trial of iWork for ya all... 500 MB download, but worth it.

rock on

It looks like saving it as a Animation is still broken but changing it to a different format (I used h.264) works fine.
