I was so clever yesterday putting ringtones on my iPhone by creating .m4r files, and then of course last night Apple destroyed that! Anyhow, I am using iTunes 7.4.1 and iToner 1.0.1 on a Macbook Pro.

Some problems:

* I tried to add a song I bought via the iTunes store to my iPhone using iToner. The song shows up in the list of ringtones on my iPhone, but nothing plays.

* Thinking I would be clever and use the .m4r files I created yesterday, I dragged those to iToner...where they promptly showed up greyed out, claiming they were ringtones managed by iTunes. iTunes, of course, doesn't recognize them. They were copied over to my iPhone though (by iToner), and they do play.

* I can't, however, delete them using iTunes or iToner.

iToner can't really do anything about the .m4r files you put on your iPhone. I'm not clear about the other questions you have, can you clarify?

Well, I'm not sure how to be more clear about this. I tried to drag a song (which, if it's important, I bought from the iTunes store) from iTunes to iToner; that didn't work. So I opened the iTunes music folder and dragged the sound file to iToner, which accepted it. When I synced, the song showed up on my iPhone ringtone list, but when I played it, nothing happened.

I'm not familiar with .m4r files either. If iTunes plays them, then use iTunes to convert them to MP3 or ACC files. Just right click on the song in iTunes. You'll see a Convert To option. After it's converted, you should then be able to drag it to iToner to have it sync and play on your iPhone.

I've been doing this all day and I have the new iTunes 7.4.1

Hope that helps,

All you have to do is rename the ring-tone file that has the extension .m4r to .m4a again. itunes 7.4.1 will then recognize it and sync it with the iphone again. It is located inside the inside the itunes music folder in a folder named Ringtones. good luck.

Dragging songs directly from iTunes to iToner *should* work, but it looks like we didn't properly fix it in iToner 1.0.1.

I'm at a loss to explain why when you dragged it to the list in iToner, it wouldn't play, however. You did click on "sync" in iToner to sync your iPhone first yes?

Yes, I did sync -- and the name of the file does show up on my iPhone in the ringtone list. However, when I select it, nothing plays.

I'm having the same issue as Dianne. I am also using iTunes 7.4.1/iToner 1.0.1. There are 3 ringtones showing up in iToner that are dimmed and when I click on one, it says it is a ringtone managed by iTunes. However, they are no longer in my iTunes library, nor are there any ringtones in the Ringtones folder in my iTunes Music folder. Also, there are no ringtones showing in iTunes under the Ringtone Tab when my iPhone is plugged in. So where are they? And how can I delete them so they are not showing up dimmed in iToner. Could they be invisible files located in iTunes library or iPhone or iToner?

I am using iToner as trial and would like to purchase if I can resolve this issue. Seems there is still work to be done so that iTunes and iToner play well together. Hope you guys can figure it out.

Keep up the good work!

iToner 1.0.1 assumes that anything that is a m4r is a ringtone that is managed by iTunes, and as such it does not attempt to let you remove it since the only m4r's that should be loaded on the iPhone are managed by the iTunes ringtones tab. The ringtones are on the phone(which is why iToner displays them in its list), i don't have an easy answer for how to remove them from the phone. there are ways but they are pretty involved.

I have filed this as an enhancement request.

I must correct you. The ringtone I speak of is not an m4r file. It was a ringtone that was an AAC file from my iTunes library and added to my iPhone as a ringtone using iToner v. 1. That is my whole issue. Why is this ringtone showing up as dimmed and managed by iTunes? I had upgraded my iTunes to 7.4 before I was aware that it didn't play nice with iToner 1. Somehow, it got wiped out by iTunes but iToner still sees it. If, in fact, it still is in the iPhone somewhere, how involved would it be to try and locate it and delete it for good?

Apple did make a change with iTunes 7.4.1 where .m4r files need to be renamed to .m4a files for iTunes to recognize them as ringtones. But I've been having the delete problem since before I started using iToner 1.0.1.

I added a ringtone that I created using GarageBand, then didn't like how it ended, so I tweaked it a bit and tried to replace the old with the new. I ended up with two ringtones with the same name, so I did a "Consolidate Library" and iTunes left me with My Ringtone and My Ringtone 1. I removed My Ringtone 1 manually since there was no other way, but it hangs around as a phantom ringtone that I can't even sync to my iPhone.

I figure it's some sort of iTunes library database glitch, so if I knew how to clean up the iTunes ringtone list, I'd be fine. It's definitely not an iToner problem, although it does show up in iToner as managed by iTunes, as I'd expect.

To tell you the truth, I don't know which is at fault. I even rebuilt my iTunes library to remove any signs of ringtone life so that I could start from scratch. There are no ringtones under the Ringtone Tab when the iPhone is pluggged in and no ringtones in the Ringtone folder in my iTunes Music folder. But every time I use iToner, the phanton ringtone shows up on the iPhone so to me it appears to be iToner/iPhone.

In my case, it was definitely not iToner since I just started using iToner today and the problem started last week. And it doesn't look like it's my iPhone either, because it's iTunes that listed the missing file in the Ringtones tab yet refused to sync it with the iPhone because it wasn't there.

If you'll notice, the ringtone files show up in the iTunes music directory, yet they never show up in the library .xml file. I suspect that iTunes keeps track of them in some other way to prevent tampering, such as in a database file, but that the database file is not very well maintained yet. Just watch; Apple will come out with an iTunes fix soon after ringtones come available in the iTunes store.

I also mentioned adding the .m4r files because I managed to *add* them to my iPhone via iToner, but I can't remove them.

As I said, in my case, I've rebuilt my iTunes library from scratch and there are no ringtones in my library, no ringtones under the Ringtone tab when the iPhone is connected, and no Ringtones folder in my iTunes Music folder. Yet iToner sees a ringtone on my iPhone managed by iTunes. Where is this ringtone? You may be right that it is somehow kept in a db file in iTunes that is not user accessible.

Regardless of how the .m4r files were added (double-clicking to add, syncing via iToner, etc), iToner may recognize them as ringtones being manages by iTunes die to the extension. With the update to iTunes 7.4.1, they're pretty much stuck there unless you manually remove them. Removing it from your iTunes library will do nothing. The file is still on your iPhone. Currently iToner can't do anything about these files either. As Rudy pointed out earlier, they can be removed, though it's somewhat involved. I assume there's "fixes" on the sites that recommended it to begin with. I still have one stuck on my phone smile.gif

Has anyone come across this error?

"Error talking to phone, may need to resync or reset phone 8"

I feel I sound like a broken record here but as I said before, my ringtone IS NOT and NEVER WAS an .m4r file!

It was a regular AAC file plucked from my library (.m4a) which I added to my iPhone with iToner 1 and using iTunes 7.3.2 (before the release of 7.4 and 7.4.1). I'm not trying to point the finger at iToner cause I think it was a combination of both. My ringtone was deleted by the upgrade to iTunes 7.4 but is still in the iPhone somewhere cause it shows up in iToner. Can someone point me to a source that would show me how to remove it from my iPhone? I don't care how "involved" it is. I'm not a novice and I don't mind trying it out.

I followed the instructions to get bogus .m4r ringtones that I made OUT of my itunes Ringtones tab (rebuilt the library) but itoner STILL shows them as being on my phone, and ghosted grey (do I need to restore the phone?) and I can't sync the phone with itoner now as it throws an error every time: "Error talking to phone, may need to resync or reset phone 8".

Arrgh! These are way more trouble than they're worth! I wish I hadn't done the "free" 7.4 method with renaming the files, etc and just waited for the itoner 1.0.1 update.
monkeymojo
Wow, got that sorted. Had to rebuild my itunes library, then restore my iphone. After all that, itoner works like a charm, and I just avoid using the itunes ringtones syncing at all. Restoring the iphone sucked because I actually had notes and everything. Ah, well!
