Hi
I have been searching for 'how-to ' on making instructional movies of how to use software. . I have long been impressed by the professional quality of Russell Brown's Quicktime movie Photoshop tutorials he has online and have been trying to work out how he does it. However I discovered that he has QT movie tutorials on how he makes them on his web site!

Well worth looking at..
http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html

Scroll down (quite along way) to...
"Dr Brown podcasting tutorials"

the software he uses is..
Snapz Pro
Qicktime Pro (for editing)
Photoshop (for zoom effects and masking)
sorensen squeeze

Re using Photoshop (CS2) for zoom feature

I really love the zoom feature Russell creates in Photoshop.
While the Photoshop action file that you can download from his website is made for Photoshop CS3 extended, it is possible to modify it to work in Photoshop CS2 on a single frame pict export from Quicktime pro.
The zoom layer can be repositioned, the file flattened in Photoshop and then saved. It can then be re-inserted back into the QT movie as per Russells instructions for "Podcasting Quicktime basics" in the podcasting tutorials section.

the CS3 action works in Photoshop CS2 on a single frame pict file if..

- your file has one layer
- that layer is named "Layer 1"
Import Russells action into CS2 and modify as follows
- replace the "Add blank video layer" with a 'Make Layer' action
- Delete all instances of "duplicate Frame".

as per Russells instructions, marquee-drag the area you want to zoom in on, and then play the action.

Cheers
