Well, Mr. Jobs announced new iphone features in his MacWorld Expo address today. I'm assuming that means new software. I'm (of course) not going to be updating my phones firmware immediately until i know if it will still work with itoner.

Howdy folks, I decided to bite the bullet for the good of the cause... It broke itoner for me. I can still sync tones to the iPhone and remove them, and even see them in the "custom tones" section of the Phone Settings menu. They just do not play when chosen... I'm sure Ambrosia can figure this out. They are smart peopls!

I can verify that the 1.1.3 is not compatible with iToner 1.05. (just installed the update). iToner syncs, the ringtones still show up on the iPhone, but they don't play on the iphone.

Well, this one sounds like it should be fun...

The idea that comes to my mind is that they managed to break support for all audio formats except for theirs...

In this way Apple can prevent syncing from working just because no matter how the tones are synced, they won't work unless they have apple's drm in them... Hopefully I'm wrong here...

someone on the modmyifone site reported that if they changed the names of the files to have teh .m4r extention, and then used iToner to send them over to the iPhone, then they worked just fine
i haven't had a chance to try that yet, but i will do in the next half hour and will let you know if it works

Hmmm... Well, this is interesting. iToner 1.0.4 seems to work for me with the 1.1.3 iPhone update and iTunes 7.6.
I had already put some custom ringtones on my iPhone using iToner before the 1.1.3 update came out today. After deciding to bite the bullet and go ahead and do the updates for both the iPhone and iTunes, I checked my custom ringtones on my iPhone and though they were visible and selectable on the phone, there was no sound played upon selecting them.
So, I fired up iToner and tried to delete the custom ringtones from my iPhone and that worked.
Then, I decided to try put my custom tones back on via iTunes using the rename-.m4a-to-.m4r trick, and that worked. My custom tones were transfered to my iPhone and played -- except for one of them. D'oh!
The one tone that wouldn't play was the only tone that was greater than 30 seconds in length, so I suspected that might be the problem.
So, I decided to go ahead and try to transfer that one tone over to my phone with iToner (again, I'm running version 1.0.4) and it worked. It sent the .m4r file over to the phone and I can select it and hear it on the phone just fine.
Make of it what you will, but this method worked for me. Maybe it'll help somebody else...

Converting the .mp3 I was using to .m4a, then renaming to .m4r via Terminal, then syncing with itoner again worked... what a clusterfsck of a workaround... Oh well, at least an SDK is coming out soon so all this foolishness will be over, right?

I just downloaded the new firmware for my iphone and of course all my ringtones no longer worked. I then downloaded itoner again and reloaded my ringtones again and they still did not work. It shows them on my iphone but they will not play. I then removed all of my ringtones from itoner and synched itoner again. At this point I have no self made ringtones. Finally I changed all of my ringtones file name extensions from .m4a to .m4r loaded them into itoner again and synch them again. All of my ringtone played when you choose them. I then called my cell phone from a landline to verify this and they all worked. Everything works great. Take that Apple.

In iTunes, set your import preferences to AAC. Then select convert song to AAC, and you'll have an .m4a.

In iTunes go to Preferences, then under Advanced click to Apple Lossless Encoder. If you have your ringtones in a separate folder in iTunes convert to Apple Lossless and that should do it. Otherwise you will need to hunt down each ringtone. Then use iToner to move the converted files to your iPhone

If you have a mac (as I do), this work-around works. I simply imported my custom mp3 ringtones into garageband, and then exported them to itunes/iphone, and it works just fine. Its a pain, but if you need your custom ringtone fix...it works.

Just tried this, and it works great. At least until iToner is working again, I have an easy workaround with Apple's "official" method of doing this. Of course, you're limited to 40-second clips for ringtones, but then how long does the phone usually ring before you pick it up?

I converted my mp3's to m4v's in Quick Time (export movie to iPhone), then used the info panel to change the v to an r.

Interesting as I am trying to get ring tones back onto my iPhone using both 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 and cannot seem to get them to "sound". They show up in Custom ring tones, but no sound. Also tried the re-naming trick too. How are you creating the original ring tones? I have down loaded many free tones that create .mp3 files. Are you saying that these can be re-named,etc., then are working for you? I must be doing something wrong.

Alright, I got it to work in a long round about way. If all else fails, try this.
First of all, I edited files with Audacity. This of course creates a problem in that you can only save it as an mp3 (unless I'm mistaken). I added the shortened file to iTunes, converted it to an AAC (quickest way for me to do so without having to get yet another program on my computer). Then found the file in Finder, clicked on Get Info, changed the file type to .m4r {I'm not sure if I needed to do this step or leave at m4a, all I know is that I did .m4r and it worked}. I then took off the old files and put on the new ones into iToner and it worked.
I also changed the file name to Ringtone- (name of song) for easier finding in iTunes.
This worked with iTunes 7.6 and iToner 1.04.
Hope it works for you! I can't wait for the update to come out: it's hard missing calls because none of your ringtones work!

the easiest way (at least with my firmware combo) is to do the above & skip iToner altogether. Use iTunes built-in ringtone section when iphone is synced & use the options on that window.
fwiw, i paid for iToner as a work-around, when i need it i'll use it again. until then there's no need for it unless it converts the file for you. we should all thank Ambrosia for keeping the pressure on apple to open ringtones up as apple eventually did. let's hope it stays that way & we can all install ringtones how we want.
versions in use: iTunes 7.5, iPhone 1.1.3, quicktime 7.3.1can anyone validate same compatibility as this with Quicktime 7.4 & iTunes 7.6? i'd like to confirm this before upgrading.

Ringtone transfer from iTunes to iPhone directly DOES NOT work. For me at least. Only one of my Ringtones shows up in 'Ringtones' Tab in iTunes even though they were all made the same way.

I just posted this in the "1.1.3 Fix" thread, but wanted to share it here as well:
Just wanted to share an easy way to complete the renaming of the ".m4a" to ".m4r". I use R-Name (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14404), a handy free little app that allows you to batch change file names. I changed my 16 custom ringtones use this program and it worked like a charm and synced and worked perfectly on my Phone. I hope this helps someone!

Jan 28 2008, 09:06 AM
We have a version running though the beta cycles now, but there's no ETA yet. We need to make sure it's good to go before it actually goes

.
Just to reiterate, iToner works with 1.1.3 and always has. The issue is your iPhone no longer support any file formats other than m4r as a ringtone after applying the 1.1.3 update. All iToner essentially does is transfer the files chosen by the user.
We're aware that the current workaround can be a bit tedious for some users. We're doing the best we can to make things easier when using iToner, and appreciate your patience

Actually, since the 1.1.2 update, iToner is no longer needed. You just have to make sure your clip is under 30 seconds, and is in mp4 format. You then can change the extension from .m4a to .m4r via the Get Info window, and add it to iTunes. It will be installed the next time you sync.
However, I hope that Ambrosia gets the SDK and uses it to re-write iToner for Apple's official blessing.
