So, I just got a PS3. If anyone has one add me on PSN, BurntOrange32. I'm loving it so far. I've got Motorstorm, Uncharted, Ratchet+Clank, and Warhawk. All great games.

That makes you the first person I've encountered to get one. I've heard someone describe the PS3's graphics as not better but 'shinier.' Agree/disagree?

I was at my local GameStop today, and there was a sign on the PS3 display:
"Buy one PS3, get a Blu-Ray disc player free!"

I have a Wii and six games. Even at the PS3's reduced price, I still bet I haven't spent as much as he did on his PS3 and 4 games.

Until the PS3's sold for $10 and a free puppy, I'm not touching the damn things. Kaz Hirai's horrific presentation at the 2006 E3 pretty much ruined any future awesomeness (little of that that there is).

Sure, in the real world, abandoned puppies suffer horrible fates, etc. etc. etc. But in my fantasy land, Sony has an inexhaustible supply of puppies to accompany bargain bin PS3s, and everyone that buys the package loves their puppies with all their hearts.
Plus the puppies come with laser beams on their heads.

Would anyone mind if I asked a question?
I'm looking at PS3's because the failiure rate on xbox 360's is so high, and the technical support seems to be pretty crappy. I do love Halo, but I'm not willing to buy a shoddy piece of equipment just to run its sequals. I wanted to know if the PS3 will work with a non HD capable TV, and if so how much better are the graphics then on a PS2.
Mackilroy
Jan 5 2008, 12:28 PM
No, you're forbidden from asking questions.

All jokes aside, the graphics are still better, the only difference going from HD to SD is the resolution.
I might add that the hardware problems of the Xbox 360 are overblown considerably. I've had two, and neither has had a single problem – one of them was purchased less than two months after launch.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure if it would work with my TV, and that is obviously an important consideration. Really? That's the only advantage of HD? Strange.
Yeah? It seems like most of the people here have had a good overall experience with the Xbox 360. I just feel that it is a bit of a risk to take on this product, considering the amount of money involved.

If your 360 dies Microsoft will replace it.
And they might even give you a free month of Xbox Live to go with it.

Frankly, I don't trust microsoft to replace my stuff. Actually, I don't trust microsoft period. The main reason I wanted a Xbox 360 was to play Halo 2&3, but since I've gotten into Half-Life, the Orange Box for PS3 is looking more and more like a stand-in for Halo 3.

I wouldn't say that there's much risk. There's always a chance that equiptment will die, but it's not as much of a chance as 360 haters make it out to be. Furthermore, while it is stupid to get a 360 just to play Halo 3, it's also stupid to get a PS3 just to play Uncharted. As for resolution, it's a pretty big advantage. There's a huge difference between 1920x1080 (1080p) or even 1280x720 (720p), and 640x480 (Standard definition).

Orange Box runs terribly on the PS3 (15-20 second load times for tiny Portal maps) , and not all that well on the 360 (about 5-6 second load times on Portal maps. For comparison, my 4 year old PC loads it in 3-4). Just get it on PC. You'll spend less and get more. Spending hundreds on a console to play a PC game on it isn't a good way to use the money. I agree that Half-Life is better than Halo, but it should be played on PC. If you have your heart set on a console, the 360 is a better deal.

They definitely replace it. I know quite a few people who have haid theirs replaced.
(Also, Halo 2 is on Xbox, not 360. But it's really not worth playing.)

I've done a lot of research, and overall the Xbox 360 just does not seem like a good buy to me. Probably in the future I will get one, but right now the PS3 seems like it'd fulfill my needs better. Thanks for the info, though, guys. I will remember it for future consideration.
Here's an example of why I'm leery of buying one.

One thing I did just think of is that the PS3 supports mouse and keyboard, which is really nice feature, and necessary for some games, like UT3. If Orange Box could be played with a mouse and keyboard on the PS3, it might be worth it.

A 360 is about the best choice for most people, but I like my PS3 a lot better than a 360. Mostly because I like the games on it, as well as the sweet ones coming out.

I wouldn't trust that entry; it's pretty much all that is wrong with wikipedia. Its "source" for that red ring of death statistic is a website called "xboxredringofdeath.com" which states the statistic... but not where it comes from.

My best friend had two 360s get the red ring. They've both been replaced for free. Due to another hardware failure, he is now on his fourth 360, and hasn't had to pay a dime since its original purchase.
Given other personal experiences with similar events, I'd say Microsoft is reliable in this aspect.
Regardless, now that Blu-ray has won, I think we'll see a rise in PS3 popularity.

Is it? No company that manufactures equipment that fails four times straight for one person or
11 times for another should be called reliable. It doesn't matter what you write between phrase A and phrase B. 'They replaced my broken consoles,' 'They massaged my feet,' 'They same-day-delivered me 72 virgins.' They're still unreliable to the point that they make shoddy consoles and don't take notice for an unacceptable amount of time. What you encountered is a reliable marketing division.

Same here!

However, I've noted that some GCN games I've used on it seem to always have corrupted data. Or maybe it's just my 1000+ block memory card.
So, on a slightly related note, Josh, have you run into that? If so, do you know how to fix it?
The best I can do is spray some Windex on the discs and hope for the best.
JoshTigerheart
Jan 15 2008, 12:20 PM
It's probably the memory card, never had that with my GC. Occasionally the Wii fails to recognize my 3rd party card, but I just take it out and put it back in and everything is fine. It has no issues with the 1st party cards, so I assume it's something programmed wrong in the 3rd party one.

The bolded statement is the only sentence that actually applies to my post.
