Full Version: Snapz Pro X files don't appear on my 10.5.1 Desktop

Snapz Pro X 2.1.2 seems to be working fine on Leopard, with one exception. I've always saved screenshot files to my Desktop. Since upgrading to Leopard, the files are being saved to my Desktop folder, but they don't appear on the Desktop screen.

Files saved from other applications (e.g., Mail) appear instantly in the column below the startup disk icon on my main monitor.

Hello,
Sorry for your frustration. We are aware of this issue happening at times with Snapz on Leopard. We have not been able to replicate this yet on house. All attempts so far have failed. Are you able to replicate the problem consistently?

I've taken 10-20 Snapz since upgrading to Leopard. I recall only one appearing instantly on my Desktop screen.

I just did some experimenting, and I think I've found an explanation for that one instance. If the contents of my Desktop folder are displayed in a Finder window, the newly snapped JPG icon will appear on my Desktop screen.

The Finder window can be (1) just the Desktop folder or (2) a listing of my Home folder, with the Desktop folder expanded. And the Finder window can be visible or minimized to the Dock.

When a Snapz file does not instantly appear on my Desktop screen, it remains invisible forever, even after a Restart.

Thanks for the additional input. We will try to replicate the problem using your information.

Hi there, I have also just done a clean install of Leopard and then upgraded to 10.5.1. I too cannot see the files if I choose save to desktop.

I have tried the above experiments also, but to no avail. Also, if I try to drag the newly created ScreenSnapz file to the Desktop from the Desktop Finder Window, the icon still doesn't appear on the actual Desktop.

Hope a fix can be made for this slightly niggly problem.

I can reproduce this here, and will look into it further. Very odd.

Update: Though if I quit the Finder or restart my Mac the files do show up for me. So the problem I'm seeing isn't as bad as what you've reported, but it might have the same cause.

I have the same problem reported by others: Snapz Pro screen captures saved to the Desktop are not visible except in a Finder window. I have found three ways to work around this (all a bit drastic):

1. Restart (or just quit the Finder).
2. Log out and then back in.
3. Open the file with a compatible program and perform a "Save as..." without changing the name (to overwrite the original).

The SnapzPro file is now visible (although it's no longer a Snapz Pro file after doing #3).

Of course, the simplest workaround is to change Snapz Pro's default Save location. However, I really prefer that the screen captures be on the Desktop.

I checked similar tools: Grab and the Firefox plugin ScreenGrab! Both were able to save to the Desktop, and their files were visible.

Further to Dr.T's workaround: I don't really use my "Pictures" folder so I made an alias, moved it to the desktop, and re-named it "Screens" My screens are now back on the desktop where I need them with one click.

Is there any news on a fix yet, I've just updated Leopard with the "Graphics Update" but no improvement.

Hello Digital Dude,
Sorry, no updates on this matter. I will check in with the developers.

FWIW, I can confirm it 100% of the time on 10.5.2, PPC Quad as well. No Haxies. I've had to resort to an alias to my desktop folder on my desktop. AFAIR, this has never happened with any other software trying to save to the desktop.

retired programmer, so happy to help diagnose, if needed.

I am experiencing this problem also. For what it's worth, I'm using a 24" iMac with 10.5.2 installed. After writing the first two sentences of this post, I tried taking a screen shot using the selection mode. All went well except the resulting file does not appear on my desktop screen but does appear in the Finder window. Two subsequent screen shots do appear as normal. Last night I was taking selection screen shots of Final Cut Express and the third screen shot did not appear, but all the rest did. Cheesch!

I'm having the same problem: Files saved to my desktop don't appear on my desktop 99,99% of the time. I have to quit the Finder, after which the saved file appears on the desktop once the Finder has restarted. Irritating. I'm running 10.5.2 on MacPro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 9 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM. Perhaps this is unneeded information.

Any progress with this?

Please advise. Thanks!

Hello AlanE,
We may have the issue resolved internally. However I am not sure when this update will be released as there are other issues to address as well. As there are viable workarounds for this issue, it's not high on the priority list. We are still working on it though and are not ignoring everybody smile.gif

Hi Evan,

You say that you may have the issue resolved internally but don't know when the update will be released because you want to solve other problems that are more of a priority? Sorry, but this answer is telling me that a bug in your software that is a constant annoyance to me in my workflow is "...not high on the priority list..."? This is really unacceptable and lousy customer service. The workarounds I've read on this list are not sufficiently helpful to me. An updated version of the program without this bug would be. That's what I paid for. This has been a known issue for a long time now. I respecfully request you provide an updated version with this bug fix before waiting til untold other issues are included.

Hello,
Sorry, I am not trying to belittle the issue or how it affects your workflow and apologize if I came across that way. The issue took a long time to replicate at all and is still inconsistent. Please understand this does not affect all users and in fact has been reported by only a very few number of people. That said, we have not been able to replicate it here with the latest internal build. If I had a stable build to send you, I would more than happily do so. The workaround of saving to another location with the assurance that we are aware of the issue and working on update is the best I can offer at this time.

Perhaps the number of affected users is larger than is currently apparent from this list. I have had the problem for a month after upgrading to Leopard and finally searched out this discussion.

I have an additional related question. This problem seems to be sporadic on my system. Sometimes I have taken a snapshot without recording the name I assigned to the file (using the "choose name" option.) This makes it hard (or impossible) to find the invisible file using Spotlight. Is there any way to recover the snapshot in such a case? I see that it is not recorded in the "Recent Items" menu, assumedly because it has yet to be opened. From experience, I know that one can lose the receipt information captured from a web transaction this way. That pretty much exceeds just inconvenience.
evan smith
In every reported and replicated case so far, the files have always been visible if you navigate to the Desktop via the Finder, or if you relaunch the Finder. I would suggest using the Finder to navigate to your save location and sort by the date modified. Hope this helps smile.gif

Is there any update forthcoming for SnapzPro to address this issue? It really does happen, and it happens on a consistent (but sporadic) basis. For example, if I take 5 snaps then I'm pretty guaranteed that 1-2 of them will be invisible. Yes, I realize there's a workaround, but after 9 months should there not be a fix to this annoyance! It's not a Leopard thing, but some bug in SnapzPro.

Hello Matthew,
We do have an update in beta that will be released once it is ready. We realize it's long overdue and appreciate your patience.
