Full Version: An honest inquiry about the new logo.

I'll admit, I do not visited the Ambrosia forums as oft as I used to. I noticed the new logo a while back, I appreciate the more "professional" look that you're trying to go for with it. Then, I came across a topic on the BnB with some pictures of the logo with its contrast bumped up...

...and my mouth about hit the floor. You're honestly using THAT as your logo? Your symbol in the corporate world? The anatomy... the proportions... I... it's like someone's kid drew it. No offense to whoever drew it; this is aimed more at whoever made the decision to USE it.

Your old logo was AMAZING. It was honestly ahead of its time. Instantly recognizable, easily viewed, and a spot-on rendering of Zeus. So here's my question: Why would you change it 1) so much, and 2) to that.
G-Spark
The old one was awesome, but this one you posted was pretty cool as well. It's more 3Dish. It's easier to see than the mostly white one they have right now. It'd be neat if some higher upper person from Ambrosia just came down here, copied that picture and used that. I like the red and white one the best since it's symbolized Ambrosia for my whole life, or at least as long as I can remember.

I see what you mean. I would like the new logo to be higher in contrast, but it does need some touching up on the proportions before they do. I seriously hope they plan on changing the logo, especially after seeing their own follower's reactions to the new one. Just imagine what everyone else in the world sees and thinks sad.gif

If a kid drew it, he/she did a pretty dang good job. I can't draw worth crap.
RJC Ultra
I agree with Meowx Design and EV Wolf... it's just...

I've got nothing to add to their complaints, actually.

This goes for me as well.

I agree.

I loved the other logo..... why??
adam_0
I think straight white was a bad move, I would use two contrasting colors, like red and white... *sigh*...

I think you guys fail to see a few things.

The former logo looked like an engraving (in fact I suspect it comes from one), while the new one is supposed to be the same picture (if you compare them, you'll see the artist made sure to have the same outlines and everything, save for what isn't practical, like the background), but this time as a low-relief. And I think it's a pretty good job at that thing. Not only that, but I'll let you guess how it is used in their new business cards. That's right. I have one.

In addition to the comments made by ZP, I would point out that the proportions of the figure are based on those found in ancient Greek art, which are often not the same as those found in reality.

I could upload one of my really bad drawings if that would help.

There actually is a fairly extensive rationale for the change. However, before I get into that, it's important to note that several parts of the equation are missing:

-- We've been using the Ambrosia logo in embossed form on our business cards, stationary, and envelopes for quite some time. It looks and feels absolutely fantastic; I've gotten more compliments concerning our business cards than seems reasonable. What we're doing is bringing this embossed look to our digital design as well, for a unified look.

-- We're in the process of completely redesigning our web site; it badly needs it. Right now you're seeing our new logo shoe-horned into the old web site look. Once the web site is properly redesigned around the new aesthetic, I think it'll make a bit more sense to you.

-- As you can see from the registration dialog in our newer products, the logo actually works extremely well as an embossed/watermarked background. We've literally and metaphorically moved our focus towards our "work mark" (the words "Ambrosia Software" in the logo). The logo exists as a low-key embossing/watermark... a nod to our past traditions and logo, but in the background.

You'll see the complete picture roll out soon enough. Even then you may hate the change, and that's fine. However we're moving in the direction that we are for very specific reasons.

Oooo, redesign...I can't wait!

Somebody's been watching a little bit too much HGTV?

Alright, so that explains the logo, but the "A"?

The A is part of the work mark.

The more I look at it, the more I start to like it. But I would prefer the red and white ones on the games, if at all possible. Or maybe a plug to change it...

The A is part of the work mark.

If the goal is to evoke the work mark, would the diamond from the 'O' do it? It's a tad less obvious, but more unique to ASW.

Just asking.

Glad to hear it, and I kind of figured a site redesign was in the works.

However, my main question here isn't about the stylization of the logo, it's the quality of the logo. As I mentioned, the anatomy and proportions of Zeus are pretty awkward and while not immediately noticeable, are quite jarring once you actually take a second look at the logo. What's the story there?

And for the record, I quite like the new "Ambrosia Software" text with the more subtle/non-existent logo and look forward to the new site.

Mike already addressed that above... and the logo proportions are largely the same as the original.
Meowx Design

Zeus's face looks like it got stung by a bee (or perhaps he was on the McDonald's Diet).
The right (downward facing) arm is tiny.
The muscles on the torso are just all sorts of weird.

Sounds like you're pretty set on it, however. Was just wondering.
adam_0
The original would look cool(er) if it got the bumpy 3D feel of the new one. I have to agree with Meowx, the proportions are a bit off. Has he been eating donuts with Hector?
Edwin|
also facial expression is slightly different. in the old logo he looks like "I'm am Zeus and i am killing this monster", in the second he looks like "hi, my name is grandfather Christmas, would you like a present?"
Consul Bob
I still think the lightning bolt in the new one looks like a broken spear or wooden rod.

Eeewww, parrot donuts. Ick. laugh.gif

I think they need a lighting bolt in the new logo. I think it would look great.

It really does look nice on the cards, better than the website. But, when I dug out the card I grabbed from Macworld, the reason was clear!

When I look at the card and the two pictures Meowx put up, it is clear that the embossed cards (or at least the one I got) are based off the old image, not the new one. The lightning in the background of the red and white logo is back, and the other little details that were changed from the old logo to the new remain in the card.
