Sorry Folks,
I have discovered that iTunes 7.6 can now sync customs ringtones without iToner.
Here is how.
1. Take any sound file and open it with QuickTime Pro.
2. Export the sound file as "Movie to iPhone". This creates an .m4v file.
3. Rename the file XXXX.m4v to XXXX.m4r. This designates the file as a ringtone.
4. Drag the m4r files into the ringtone list in iTunes. This will add the new ringtones to your ringtone list.
5. Sync your iPhone and the new ringtones will be added.
No iToner needed.

Keep in mind that in order to use iTunes to manage your Ringtones they have to be under 30 Seconds. If they are over 30 Seconds they wont show up when you try to Sync.

In addition to the 30 second limitation, Ambrosia is currently working on a patch to iToner. The next version of iToner will automatically reformat the files, and rename them. Furthermore, iToner is as simple as drag, drop, and sync, and allows you to maintain playlists of ringtones. Those are things that the combination of iTunes and Garage Band cannot do as easily. iToner may not be quite as appealing at it once was, but it is hardly superfluous.

I was playing around with this and iTunes also seems to be "picky" about what (renamed) files can be dragged and dropped onto the ringtones folder. I cannot figure out the pattern yet, but only about 1/4 of the ones I have in my library seem to work that way (and it's not length of ringtone, b/c it let me drop an 8 minute long song and accepted it).
However, _every_ one of those files sync'd with iToner, so it still gets my vote

My two cents...
I must say that I doubt iToner is or will become superfluous. Ambrosia has done a wonderful job updating the application, usually in less than a week, after each iteration of firmware that Apple releases. For those of us who choose to update the firmware immediately, we run the "risk" of losing custom ringtones for a week. I really hope that isn't a problem for anyone. It's only ringtones! Anyway, if you want the guarantee that iToner will work, you are not forced to upgrade your firmware and you can wait until an official fix in released. While there might be a way to "hack" your mp3s to get on your phone as ringtones, nothing (for Mac) has been released that does what iToner does. Additionally, these hacks change with each new firmware upgrade. iToner, on the other hand, functions the exact same way (after a fix for the firmware is released) with each iteration of the firmware. I just spent time (because I had it) changing all of my .mp3 ringtones to .m4a's and renaming them and adding them to my phone. iToner simply is not superfluous because on a regular basis, I do not have this time to put a ringtone on my phone. Further, iToner allows you to use more portable mp3's to be added to the phone and there are no time limits on the ringtones like you have in iTunes.

I'm sorry but your logic that iToner is superfluous is pretty lame. The same logic could be used to make this point:
Your personal computer is now superfluous
Sorry Folks,
I have discovered that your local library has computers that you can use without having to resort to your own personal computer.
Here is how:
1. Determine where your library is.
2. Take public transportation to your newly discovered public library (don't use your personal car as my logic also works to show that your own car is superfluous).
3. Obtain a library card.
4. Find a computer with the least disgusting keyboard.
5. Can't find one? Wait for the one hot chic to leave so you can use her computer.
5. Log on and voila! copious amounts of porn at your fingertips.
No personal computer needed.
The fact of the matter is some of us don't want to be hassled with lame workarounds. Also, not everyone has or needs QuickTime Pro. If someone buys QuickTime Pro just to get custom ringtones then they deserve the hassle you described in your workaround.
When / If Apple makes implementing custom ringtones as easy and near effortless as iToner, then you may have a valid point with the superfluous comment.
Just sayin' is all...
