I would shoot the ######er who steals my parking space every morning when I drive my wife to work.

I'm actually working my way through the various legal processes of getting a gun license and basic pistol training to eventually buy a gun.
I'm not interested in shooting anybody though, I just want to shoot at targets for recreation on a shooting range.

I actually own multiple guns and I have no intention of shooting anybody. I hunt, target shoot, and have them for home defense (when I am at home, college won't let me have any on campus).
mrxak, have you decided what caliber and make of pistol to buy?

I personally like .45 caliber, but if you may be better off with .40. Slightly smaller round is lighter and a little easier to target shoot with. Either of these calibers can be used for target shooting or self defense. If you plan on only target shooting though, you may want to consider .22. Very light, and easy to use target shooting, but has no defensive capability. .22 also has price advantage because you can buy a brick of 500 rounds for fairly cheap.
As for 9mm I hate the round, but I know some people who use it for target shooting. I personally hate it because people believe that it can be used defensively, but it has too little knock down to be truly effective. Likewise I would avoid .38 for the same reason.
.357 and .50 are the beasts of the pistol rounds and I do not recommend for anyone who wants to get into target shooting. These rounds can make anyone's wrist hurt after shooting and were designed for taking down extremely large animals.
For the make of the gun, it depends on the caliber for what I prefer. Ruger makes a nice .22 pistol (I shoot a mark II), but for heavier calibers I prefer Glock to other brands because I have never had a Glock jam on me. If you do decide on a Glock, I recommend that you replace the trigger spring with one of a lighter pull because the 5 pound pull on the stock trigger can adversely effect your aim.

I have looked at the Ruger .22s specifically for cost effectiveness, and I've heard a lot of good things. I think it makes sense to learn how to shoot well on something that's a little easier and cheaper and then go to a higher caliber later if I want. There are ranges around here that let you rent guns anyway, so if I feel like shooting something heavier I have that option anyway.

How dare you dispatch with my opinion so bluntly! <bang>

I really don't see folks getting shot over knowing where they stand at any given time. My perception of the human race is that, if folks know the score, then they either deal with it or they fling themselves off a bridge. The frustration of not knowing where someone stands is the type of thing that I see making someone consult the voices in their head and mow down some random passerby.
Personally, I'm fond of never saying anything of substance and don't really care all that much about what the score is. However, I've seen quite a few situations that could've been solved either with more bluntness on my or someone else's part. I'm a huge fan of tact given the state of affairs present in society today, but I'm not sure if it should ideally be that way.

I think that in either Japan or China sticking out your pinkie finger is equal to flipping a person off. So just drink tea with your pinkie out. I do it all the time! Well except for the tea thing.
