Because I am a consummate pedant: green is actually the color of the Catholics in Ireland. Orange is the color of the Protestants. Hence the orange and green bars on the Irish flag. Thus, by wearing green, you choose to identify yourself as a Catholic. Orange would also be an appropriate color to wear.

But St. Patrick's Day is a catholic holiday, no? That's why the pope can apparently change it at the drop of a hat.

Because I feel the need to one-up both Darwinian and MagnusApollo at the same time: St. Patrick's Day 2008 was last Saturday, March 15^th. In most years it is the 17^th, and the last time it wasn't was 1940. The next scheduled time it won't be will be 2160.
