I've played GH3 on the Wii a whopping two times, and had a blast. I have a large chunk of money on Amazon, so I'm going to get it. However, I don't know if I should get the Wii version, or the 360 version. I've already downloaded some extra tracks for the 360 version (simply because they were free, and I figured it would be better to hit the ground running with them). Is there downloadable content for the Wii version as well? If not, that will truly be the determining factor.

My dad bought GH3 for the Wii, and while it's fun, I haven't seen any download options so far. You can 'buy' new songs, but that's in-game and offline. I checked Wikipedia and it claims that content will be arriving sometime in 2008, but who knows when?
Personally, I'd go with the 360 version for the better online system and the downloadable content that's already out there.

If you are considering the 360 version, allow me to strongly recommend Rock Band instead. GHIII was developed in house at Activision, while the company that made GHI and II struck out on its own with Rock Band. It's more expensive, but it has a singing part that's like karaoke and drums as well as guitars. The interface is cleaner and the track listing is better in my opinion, though that's a matter of taste. It also has massive amounts of DLC with much more planned for the future. Final verdict for me: GHIII is pretty much exactly the same as GHII except with some stuff changed for no reason, while Rock Band is far and away more advanced and more fun.

Yes, but I'll be playing by myself about 95% of the time. $150 is a little steep for a game I won't likely be inviting anyone over to play (there's simply no room). I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted, though...

Don't get the Wii version. There is no system in place for downloadable songs and apparently the sound's in Mono as well.

The mono sound issue has been fixed (Activision replaced everyone's discs who asked for it), but there is no downloadable content.

Well, another thing is that these games are a lot more fun with a few friends. If you loves your Guitar Hero, that's ok, but if I wasn't planning on playing with friends, I'd spend the money on a different kind of game.

I'm not much of a gamer; first person shooters aren't the bread and butter of my gaming library. Besides, this way I can get good for those times I have someone else to play with.

It's true that you can't do everything on easy and not be a pussy. I'd recommend the 360 version also. People have already said DLC, plus the graphics will be better if you have an HDTV, since I don't think the Wii outputs at 1080p like the 360 does.

Yeah, the original purpose of the topic (Wii or 360) has been solidified in the 360's favor (primarily for the downloadable content; I have an HD TV, but I'm not using HDMI cables). Now it's just a matter of deciding between GH3 and Rock Band.
Another friend (who, truth be told, is about the only person I'd be likely to invite over to play) has heavily suggested Rock Band instead of GH3. Given the fact that I respect her opinion greatly (and she's cute as hell), I'm definitely considering jumping ship. I did like the collection of songs that came with it.
The price tag is just a little bit steep...

You can do 1080p through component, I have.
If you're definitely going to invite someone over, Rock Band has a greater variety of instruments, but GH3 apparently has more music (so I was told).

GHIII has a few more songs, though I like Rock Band's choices of music more. With DLC, I have no idea how many songs each one has, but it's a lot. Rock Band's songs are cheaper,
according to Joystiq, though only by $0.75. (440 points, or $5.50 vs. 500 points or $6.25.)

Go with rock band. You can probably find a way of getting it cheaper. Plus, being able to play 4 player is extremely useful. Not to mention the online aspects, being able to buy more songs...Cleaner interface...
Having the extra instruments sells it for me. In guitar hero, it's either be good at the guitar or gtho. With rock band, you can play around and pick something you like. And your friends can, too.

I know that would be the selling point for me, but he did say he mostly plans to play alone. Still, being good at Rock Band drums is popular with the ladies so it might be worth it to practice that.

1. I flew into and out of Nashville today. I never knew you have burned EVula.com into the landscape.
2. I have the wii and the sound effects coming form the guitar are nice, but the songs you don't get sucks.

I'd definately recommend Rock Band. But, I never cared much for Guitar Hero and almost exclusively play drums in Rock Band (and, conventiently, most of the people I play it with are fans of the guitars and aren't too good at the drums.)

Although, between the two, I have to say that I like Rock Band more.

Meh. Playing on a 20 inch screen would still kinda suck. Anyway, TV speakers with potential of surround/subwoofers/all that other good stuff (I have no idea what speaker setup you have, EVula, but it's fun to play these games on a nice one

) vs. desktop speakers.

Well other than that, if you have one, go with PS2.
Other than that, the obvious way would be to buy it for whatever system you have that you can buy it for. If you don't, then get a PS2 since that also has Rock Band.

And Rock Band is also out for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Not just the PS2.

And also the PS2 versions of both games look ugly and have no DLC. Not worth it being $10 cheaper or however much.

That's a good choice. If I had more disposable money I'd be tempted to get a 360 mostly for that and Assassin's Creed (and
MK vs. DC when it comes out...) As it stands, I play it at least once a week at friend's houses. I REALLY wish the Wii version was going to have downloadables.

As do I (as of a few minutes ago when my wife and I got home from the store after picking the game up as her graduation present). Of course, only having a Wii (and unless one fell into our laps, no chance of having a PS3 or an XBox360), our choice was pretty much made for us. I hadn't really paid much attention to the track listing for the game but I'm surprised at how many songs I have on CD that are featured on the game.
But yeah, looking at some of the content available for download for the other versions, I'll be crossing my fingers that the Wii will have downloadable content before too long (though I suppose it can wait until my wife actually gives me a chance to play the game for myself

)

Yeah i got inspired and decided to hook up the PS3 rockband that was sitting in our room and give it a shot(a friends)
Personally, i much prefer GHIII
1. Songs i've heard of and some i actually like on GH. I'll admit i don't know much music so i won't know eclectic stuff but so far i like none of the music on rock band.
2. I've yet to use the bass/guitar(its a 2 in 1, you don't get one of each). However the drums feel quite boring to play and the singing is quite frankly boring as hell , and unchallenging.
3. Since they couldn't completely rip the play style of GH off the only differences are that 1, if you only hit one note out of 2 it gives you credit for it, and 2, you can't activate your super stardom mode whenever you want. It comes at predefined points once you've built enough. This is kinda annoying when you're trying to save it up for more time later because after every single section comes another "freestyle" point to activate your special.

Just crank up the difficulty a bit. Unless you have perfect pitch, years of training, or both, I don't see how you could say singing is easy, especially if you don't know the songs. On Easy, you can sing the entire song in a different key and still get 90%, on Expert you have have to sing every note pitch perfect. Drums sure as hell aren't boring on Hard and Expert. You'd better have a good sense of rhythm to get the bass drum on the offbeats while playing quarter note triplets on the pads (Yes, they do throw stuff that complicated at you on the hardest difficulties.)

The 1 out of 2 thing is drums only. Lack of star power ability whenever you want is kinda annoying, but just pressing a button to activate it is a bit artificial. As in, even more artificial than plastic instruments. Also, Rock Band isn't a ripoff of GH, it was made by the same people. GHIII was made by Activision in-house after Harmonix bailed to make Rock Band.

Well, one of the "cities" you play at in Rock Band is specifically obscure stuff; all the bands featured have some tie back to Harmonix, usually by one of the developers either being in the band or by some other close association. There were a lot of songs in GH3 that I'd never heard, whereas Rock Band tends to have (with the previously mentioned exception) more mainstream stuff, and more varied.
