Full Version: Game suggestions

My friends and I are all lucky enough to be receiving various MacBooks for Graduation, and looking to find a cool strategy/realtime/puzzle or even a shooter/action game to play with and against each other.

Spore doesn't come out until later this summer. I think there might be a new Civilization title being released, but I don't know for sure. I need suggestions for a good game! Thanks for any help.

The mac client is slightly outdated, but it doesn't matter, its stable and there aren't any game balance changes in the new version, which itself is quite old.

edit: oh, and its free. free as in beer and freedom.

There's also all the stuff ASW makes.
Shlimazel
Quake or Halo are good for FPS multiplayer. We have been playing a lot of Halo matches here recently, also, so you guys could join us if you want.
Mackilroy
Starcraft for a strategy game, Defcon as another, then Halo and Tremulous (as mentioned), Redline if you don't mind racing games, and… I can't think of any other games I'd recommend for a MacBook right now.

Dangit, you stole mine. But also 4x4 Evo 2 (there was mention of this in the Redline forums, it's free and multiplay-able)

EDIT: If you're at school, you won't be able to go to tremulous.net, so try http://www.tremulous.info/
...I'll admit, I've been playing at school...

I've heard C&C3 is really good, and there's an expansion pack.
darth_vader
I've heard C&C 3 is not so good. As in, it's an RTS where matches last less time than many FPSs.

Of course, we have different friends.
Two Jacks
I have a few.

It's an old school, multiplayer and timeless FPS: Marathon! http://source.bungie.org/get/

It's multiplayer, RTS but the comunity for it is a little dead: Gate88! http://www.queasygames.com/gate88/index.html

Can't break in a new computer with out it, 2D scroller: Cave Story! http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

The sites in Japanesse but you can download all ABA Games' Mac games here: Torus Trooper is highly recomended. http://shinh.skr.jp/osxbin/

Also keep an eye on the Mac games section, they have something good there every now and then: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/

Well, regarding Spore, you'd better check anyway what graphics your MacBooks have. The GMA 950 isn't supported by the newly released Creature Editor, so I wouldn't bet on the game supporting it either…

The creature creator for Spore comes out tomorrow, actually.
Mackilroy
If they're getting recent MacBooks, the X3100 is supported (as is the 8600, obviously).

And the Creature Creator is out today, EVula. tongue.gif

Quinn is good fun. I'm also going to throw in a vote for Marathon, Marathon 2, Marthon Infinity and the Rubicon TC. Civ 4 is an excellent choice too.
Manta
Diablo II + expansion is fun and time consuming multiplayer online. Yea, I'm suggesting this because I just recently got readdicted.
0101181920
Umm, just a note. You can't run anything OS 9 on an Intel processer. So that rules out Marathon, unless there's been an OSX version released while I wasn't looking.
Mackilroy
Aleph One, and there's also SheepShaver.
Trah
warcraft 3, and the zillions of amazing custom maps are an amazing value.

A new MacBook Pro comes with at least a 256mb 8600M GT.
It also comes with a good-sized HDD, so you can run Boot Camp.
Seeing this, I'd like to take a break from the trend of this thread and recommend Crysis. At the 1440x900 resolution, it shouldn't be too big a problem; you should be able to run in high spec.
Also, some Mass Effect and Unreal Tournament 3 and Bioshock, and I hear Gears of War and Call of Duty 4 are decent games, too.
Treat yourself to some awesome visuals. Come on... smile.gif

Of course, if it's just a MacBook, then maybe it's time to break out some of that Jazz Jackrabbit 2 for OS X.

Three words. Super Maze Wars.

DataSpot: CoD4 is coming to the Mac soon (announced 2 WWDCs ago).
nfreader
Well if we're branching out a bit, I'm going to put in the good word for Team Fortress 2. It's just like any other strategy game, just with more blood.

So is Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, supposedly. However, there may be a noticeable difference in performance, as with games in the past.

great stuff

Solid list, good light games, second them all (except maybe gate88, because it gets boring after one or two games).

This is definitely a great option for play with tons of friends - wc3 is only worth playing if you've got them and damn is it worth playing when you do.

Suggestion: Look into Nexuiz for a Quake-like multiplayer FPS

edit: also wesnoth and liquidwar, although wesnoth's multiplayer is pretty meh most of the time since it's turn-based and all
liquidwar is really fun though, try it out

edit2: seriously marathon is really fun multiplayer, #ev3 used to have its own marathon channel but that sorta died after 06, dunno why, that was a sweet time to be playing marathon though.

My problem with the game was that it lacked the charm of the original. You know how sequels are. It was too... sequel-y. I also liked the music better in the first one.

I haven't actually played the original.

How about you actually look at the page for 5 seconds before jumping to conclusions? There's a link on there that says "Get the original Wingnuts for free."

It's in the <h3> that your browser isn't rendering for some reason. You might want to look into that.

Ah, crap. I can see it in the source, but not the browser.

Crap, crap, crap.

EDIT: Can you show me what it's supposed to look like please?
