It only came out yesterday and I've already lost hours and hours to this thing. It's frankly ridiculously how much control you have making your creatures, and I've made both realistic animals and absolutely nuts ones. Try out the demo, NOW.
Mackilroy
More like "Spore Creature Creator" but it's still very cool. I've created around 35 creatures so far, and uploaded around a dozen of them. Plus it's ridiculously easy to get new creatures, and if the number of registered users is any case there will be millions of creatures to populate the galaxy by the time of actual game release. smile.gif
Hamster
Mispeled
I couldn't get it to work... I'll have to figure out what's messed up later today, because I do really want to play it.
Mackilroy
What computer are you running it on, Mispeled?

Hamster: that's scary but awesome at the same time.

Which is, I think, precisely why they released this thing now wink.gif.
adam_0
Interesting... so I just made a new creation, what do I do with it now?
mrxak
Play with it, save it, share it, and make another!
JoshTigerheart
Downloading now. I'm so going to have to make what my mind sees as a Cunjo from Nova.

Edit: Darn it! It doesn't run on PPC Macs! Shouldn't they put the requirements on the download page?
Mackilroy
They plaster it everywhere else, but oh well. Yeah, it's Intel-only. Sucks, but this might be the first Ciderized game I don't bother buying the PC version for.
Mispeled
I was getting an odd error message before, but I'm able to run it now. The possibilities are huge even with the limited number of parts you get with the demo.
Rickton
Not only is it Intel-only, it's 10.5 only.
Bastards!

How'd you manage to pull that off? I've got a G5 iMac, and I'd love to try this out (though I'm still running 10.4). I suppose I can download it on my 10.5 Intel machine at work, but I don't really feel like driving down to the office just to play a game...
Mackilroy
I bought the full version, and it's awesome. So many more parts and color designs to work with, I've made some neat-looking creatures. biggrin.gif

I share your pain. sad.gif
Rickton
Oh well, by the time 10.6 comes out hopefully Spore will only be $30 or so.
Hamster
I made a darwinian!

Hamster
And a walker from Avara.

prophile
Hamster wins the topic.

nice, very nice wink.gif

That Darwinian seems appropriate for this game.
mrxak
I want to see a video of the darwinian.

Details how to run spore on GMA 950s, but it won't work on macbooks. It appears Spore is just a windows game that has been WINE-d (or in this case, they used Cider) to run on OSX.

EA fail.
Mackilroy
Actually, Ciderized it doesn't run much worse than the PC version does, and the PC version is very smooth and with high quality.

Such has been my experience, at any rate.

I tried it, but couldn't get it to work. The steps listed on that page are thus:

QUOTE
1. download trial
2. click show package content
3. open resources folder
4. open tginstall.plist in Property List Editor (Having xcode installed helps)
5. Click the root triangle
6. scroll down to InsufficientRenderers
7. Change Intel GMA 950 OpenGL Engine to Intel GMA 850 OpenGL Engine (or something lower)
8. Save and run the installer

I fail on step up 8. Trying to run the installer fails anyways because I don't meet the requirements listed (I'm assuming it's because I have 10.4.11), so I can't attempt to change things afterwards either. Anyone know how I can force it to save my changes, or if that's even possible?

Edit: After copying the installer to my hard drive, then I can make the changes and it installs. I then had to do the same thing again on the actual installed application for it to let me run that, which brings me to a spinning galaxy screen that, every time I click anywhere, drops me back into the finder.

So, I can't run it on my Mac Mini 1.66 GHz Core Duo with 1GB RAM and Intel GMA 950, running 10.4.11. The music plays, however, and is quite nice. smile.gif
EVula
Played the demo at work. Wow... lots of fun, though I do wish there were more pieces to choose from (but it is a free demo, though). Very, very cool.
LoneIgadzra
Wait, it's Cider? Goddammit.

Runs surprisingly well, considering, but I'd still expect better out of my MBP, even though the X1600 is a laugh. Trying the Windows version now for comparison.

Also, POST YOUR CREATURES. SRSLY. They are stored as tiny .pngs which you can upload practically anywhere and post inline, and you can also link to the sporepedia. I propose the use of the tag "ambrosia" so we can find each others' creatures easily.

And just a heads up, but it looks like the $10 the full version of the creator costs doesn't count toward buying Spore later at all. :EA:

Edit: Yup, much better framerate in Windows. Can max everything but shadows and still run at 1440x900. ###### Cider.

Edit #2: My best creatures:

<- Dire Lobster. The eyes (not shown) make it creepy.
JoshTigerheart
Yeah, I was expecting that. Even if it wasn't for it being anti-PPC anti-10.4, I'd still be waiting for the regular game.

I downloaded the demo onto my brother's computer and gave it a whirl. Made a couple of creatures, but you don't seem to be able to make more than insects and and reptiles with the limited parts. I was wanting to make mammalian creatures.

Also, how do you make a tail? Is that a part(s) or do you need some clever spinal work?
Mackilroy
Clever spinal work or different parts. And you can make other creatures, but you need the full version. wink.gif

Some of my creatures:

JoshTigerheart

My only creature worth sharing thus far... considering I only have two. I might make more next time I get my hands on my brother's computer.

By the way, if it's possible to share creatures between specific people, here's my profile page on the Sporepedia.

Macosxhints.com has published a tip today on how to get the Creature editor working on 10.4.11. I haven't tried it yet, but the article is at:

This is a step required after you get the installer to run. So, I've tried it, but it still doesn't work for me. In fact, this is what I get:

EVula
So, apparently, you can't open your saved creatures once you save them and quit (with the free demo). That really sucks.
lobf
I noticed that too. How weak. It still shows the number you have saved, so that makes me think we can open them again with the full game. *crosses fingers*

Anyways, this is really fun, and my girlfriend likes it too. Too bad about the lack of flying in the demo, though.
JoshTigerheart
I can access them. Did you make a Spore account?

What? Weird.

lobf: EA's confirmed you can use creatures made now in the game once it's released.

Yes you can.

I downloaded the disc image for my new Intel iMac, but it won't mount. It says that the dmg is "not recognized". Does anyone know what's going on with this? As a side note, I'm also having problems opening zips.
