Something has gone wrong with my copy of Wiretap Studio. Every time I try to send a sound file to iTunes, and at least half the time that I use the 'send to email' function, it unexpectedly quits.
It's getting very frustrating. I'm a music teacher and I'm trying to prepare short sound files for class presentation.
help!

thanks

You may be running into a known bug when using the Return key to choose a recipient from the popup menu. This could cause a crash immediately, or on the next time you use "Send via Email". The workaround is to select recipients using the mouse or the Tab key. This bug will be fixed in the next version of WireTap Studio (and of Dragster).

I don't know why you're seeing crashes when sending to iTunes. If you open the Console application from /Application/Utilities, do you see any relevant errors? If you go to Library/Logs/CrashReporter, inside your home folder, are there any crash logs for WireTap? As a last resort, you can always drag the file to your desktop and then into iTunes, but we'd like to get this bug fixed if at all possible.

I've tested the "return key" bug and it did not crash when I used the mouse. thanks. Regarding the 'send to iTunes' crashes, if I'm remembering correctly, the problem only began in the last month (I've had the app since the MacExpo in January).
Another problem I'm encountering, which I forgot about ( I don't need to use it very often), is when I'm using the recorder function, e.g., capturing audio from iTunes or iDVD, it appears to be functioning normally until I stop the controller. The window to name the file no longer comes up - it appears frozen. Since it seems no longer to be doing anything, I try to quit the app, and a dialog comes up saying that it's recording and do I really want to quit? Since I'd already hit the stop on the controller, and the record button is no longer red (none of the buttons, at this point, can be effected), I assume it to be a lost cause and quit the app (the sound files are often 20 seconds, and shouldn't take long at all before the 'name the file' box comes up). I'm sorry to say that at least for that function, I'm back to using Audio Hijack Pro and Fission. Not as elegant, but stable, and I'm getting the file I need.

I don't know how to read the console and crash reports, but I've included them in the attachment. With your max upload at 100k, I pasted a few pages worth of the most recent of each into a textEdit doc. I hClick to view attachmentope it helps.

thanks

Hello Bill,
It appears you're still using an older version of WireTap Studio (1.0.4). Please update to the current version, 1.0.6, and let us know how things improve for you (minus the e-mail bug). You can either download WireTap Studio again amd reinstall it, or choose "Check for Updates..." from the WireTap Studio menu in the application. Thanks!

Hi
thanks. I ran into trouble in downloading and installing the new version. I feel silly, because I know it should be a smoother process. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I used the "try for updates" option: yes, a new version is available, etc. After it was downloaded, the box Install and Relaunch appeared and I clicked on it, but nothing happened. The first time, I went away from the computer and came back and thought it was done, but when I looked at "About WireTap Studio" it still said v.1.0.4. So I did it again. A total of three times now and I watched after I clicked on "Install and Relaunch" and nothing happened. It didn't quit, there was no time bar showing the process under way - nothing.
I also tried downloading from your site. When I follow instructions, "To install WireTap Studio double click the icon below" (WireTap Studio installer.mpkg), I get the box, "There is no default app specified to open... choose App." So I dragged the icon to the Applications folder. It appears to be installing, but what gets installed is a folder that, when I double click, gives me the same response as above, (There is no default app...) When I try to get inside (ctrl-click), there is no app icon or installer to click on.

what am I doing wrong. It's just a simple install.

Bill,

Based on your Console log, I can confirm that we've had a report of the same iTunes bug before (#931 in our database) but haven't been able to reproduce it. I'll see if there's any additional information you can give us to help track it down. For what it's worth, the other user with this problem was able to work around it by exporting just to the iTunes library, without selecting a specific playlist.

The install problem you're having, on the other hand, doesn't sound like it's specific to WireTap. It sounds like your copy of OS X has lost the ability to open Installer packages. (I assume you'd have the same problem when trying other .mpkg installers?) The Installer application is located at /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app. You could try opening it directly, then selecting the WireTap Studio package.

If that works, you can bring up the Get Info for WireTap Studio.mpkg, from the Open With menu select Installer.app (you may have to use the Other... option). Then click the Change All... button. This should fix your system's ability to open Installer packages.

Could you explain exactly when WireTap crashes when sending to iTunes? And also (if you leave the Console window open) when the "Assertion error" warning appears? Does it happen when the Save As window appears? When you click on a playlist? Only when you hit Send?

Thanks,

Hi
It appears that somehow the Installer.app got deleted from my system. it's nowhere to be found. I can't imagine how I got to the folder and removed it, but it's gone.
I first went to Apple's support site, in case there was a way of downloading it for my system, but no.
So is there a way of extracting just the Installer.app from the Tiger install disk? I suppose not. Does that mean I have to reinstall Tiger to have it back where it belongs?

btw, this Apple help that you're giving me is above and beyond — something I should be taking up with Apple directly, so I appreciate it very much. I never considered that it could be an Apple problem, so to bring it to my attention saves me an incredible amount of frustration and time.

I will try to answer your Qs regarding when and where.

thanks

Hi again

I tried sending a sound file to a different playlist (in iTunes) than the ones I've been working in lately and it did not crash.
I just tried it again sending it to a more usual playlist, and it crashed only when I hit Send. but "Assertion Failure" seems to happen when I choose the playlist. And it seems that once I choose a playlist, it's frozen, so that I cannot change my mind and choose another. In case there was some delay between my choosing the playlist and the eventual crash, I waited over a minute before hitting Send, but WireTap stayed alive until I hit Send.
I hope this was helpful

Hi again
It hadn't occurred to me earlier, but my wife's computer also has Tiger installed (fairly recent, if not the same version), so I followed the tree and there was no Installer.app in her CoreServices folder. Could it be somewhere else in our version of
OS X?

Update on the Installer problem. Apparently, the the Installer is found as "Installer" in the Utilities Folder. I'm guessing that I assumed that it was a third party app installer that I could toss and did so. I copied the Installer from my wife's Utility Folder and all is well with the world. Well, almost. Let me know if my info helps to figure out why it's crashing.

And thanks so much for your help.
