Anybody know how to prevent ringtones from disappearing after syncing with iTunes. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they go. Very frustrating when I have to keep resyncing with iToner ever few days.

Hello,
Sorry for your frustration. Are you using the current version, 1.0.8? Are you syncing with any other computers? Have you noticed any pattern to when they disappear?

I am using 1.0.8 with iPhone 3G and iTunes 7.7. I haven't been able to discover a pattern. I am not using iTunes to manage ringtones.

Hmm. Are you using MobileMe to sync anything? Anything to help pinpoint it would be greatly appreciated smile.gif

Are you plugging your iPhone 3G into multiple different computers?

No. Just my PowerBook G4 running OS X Leopard.

I am using MobileMe to sync my email, contacts and calendars. It just happened again today. It seems whenever I change sync setting in iTunes, such as playlists or movies, all my ringtones disappear. Also, sometimes they are still on the phone but it still plays the Mirimba ringtone when I receive a phone call. When I go into my settings, my custom one is still selected, but I have to click on it and select it again in order to get it to play that ringtone for future phone calls.

I am having the exact same problem. It seems that whenever I sync with iTunes it resets my ringtones to Default. All the ringtones are still on the phone, but I've got to go in and reselect them in each contact.

That's not the problem I'm having. My ringtones don't even show up sometimes like they've been erased, but when I add them into iToner and resync, all the ring IDs for my contacts are back to the custom ringtones that I had before they were deleted. It's just inconvenient to have to reload my ringtones every day or two.

Do you ringtones still play as expected? Are you also using MobileMe to update your contacts? There are some known bugs in the Contacts app that prevents the info from updating/refreshing properly.

If I go in and re-select the custom ringtone it will then play as expected. This doesn't happen every time I sync with iTunes. I am using Mobile Me and it is set to update my contacts. Perhaps that's the problem. I haven't changed any of the contacts that have custom ringtones, and when they are reset to default they are all reset to default.

Also got the same problem.

1. Using iTUnes 7.7
2. Using MobileMe as well

I now decided not to buy iToner until this problem is fixed.

Thanks for the update. If MobileMe is messing with the contacts IDs, then this would make sense. It should not interfere with anything if you have changed the default ringtone. Only those assigned to contacts should be affected. We're trying to do some testing here as well to help figure things out.

Hello,
There have been several problems listed in this thread which differ from each other. Can you please specify what problem are you having?

I too have been experiencing this. I cannot pinpoint a pattern. I have many apps on the first version iPhone. Backing up takes a very long time. The phone will then sync. I will then NOT have my ringtones installed. Sorry, can't figure out a pattern or a possible cause.
evan smith
Hello,
If the back up is doing it, it's certainly not doing to it every time. If interested you can try using Backup Disabler to see if it makes a difference for you.

I am having the same problem. The pattern I have noticed is that it happens after I install something from the app store, either via phone or via itunes.

Iphone 3g
iTunes 7.7.1
itoner 1.0.8

I initially posted about this very problem over on the 1.0.8 announcement thread under this link, which gives all the pertinent system info http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php...t&p=1918158

then I found this thread

Basic gist is this, I have to reload my ringtones fron iToner back onto my iphone at least once a day. iToner, when launched, will show NO ringtones in its screen when it launches, so I will have to repopulate it before syncing.

I reloaded my ringtones this morning, for what is probably the sixth time since I started using iToner's trial period about five days ago.
I have just tried installing an app directly on my iphone3G through the mobile app store. the ringtones were fine.
I then synced with the computer, it copied over the new app and it also proceeded to do a backup while it was at it (it seems as though it has to do that at least twice a day, minimum).
The ringtones persist.
I removed a playlist that had a single song/audible book in it... ringtones still there.
turned it off, and turned it back on. ringtones are fine.
I try to launch enough thirdparty apps to get it to crash. 30 min of playing Aurora Feint, Jirbo Break, Palringo, AIM, some bubble popping, partial game of Othello, more Aurora Feint (locking the phone on its menu), apps now become unstable, launch two more apps and ... apple symbol appears on the screen.
ringtones persist
Try syncing again... does another 'backup' ... a very looong backup...
ringtones are still there.
remove recently downloaded app from phone and iTunes. ringtones remain.
lock phone and hit sync... no 'backup' this time but spends unnecessary time on already existing 6mb of photos
ringtones still there.

I am beginning to wonder if it doesn't have something to do with a certain period of time elapsing before ringtones are removed??

Sorry for your frustration, and thanks the info you have provided. As you have seen firsthand it's difficult to replicate the problem. We are looking into the issue and trying to resolve it. If anybody is able to reliably replicate the problem, please let us know. The best I can suggest at the moment is a clean start by doing:

1. Quit iTunes and iToner.
2. Delete "iTonerSupport.bundle" from your ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins folder
3. Delete "Ambrosia Ringtone Cache" folder from your ~/Library/Application Support folder
4. Download and install the latest version of iToner
4. Launch iToner, delete any ringtones and sync.
5. Add your ringtones back into iToner and sync again.

Thanks for your patience smile.gif

I am not sure if this will help any of the iToner users who have had ring tones disappear from syncing or not, but one of the issues I discovered with my iPhone (using a 2.5 iPhone, with 2.01 software) was that when contacts were set up to push through MobileMe, then the constant data exchange ended up dumping my ringtones. As long as I keep my iPhone's contact data from being updated by MobileMe then I am good to go. I know it sounds like a pain, but really it's pretty simple. If I update or add contacts directly in my iPhone or on my MacBook Pro, I make sure that I sync to MobileMe first (force MobileMe to take my MacBook Pro's data instead of the laptop taking MobileMe's data) and as long as I do that I remain in good shape. But once something writes contact data that overwrites what's already existing on my iPhone, that's when I end up having to reload my ringtones.

Now if I could just find a way to add my iToner ringtones to the sounds used for text messages, I'd be a really happy camper.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately I've heard from folks that are not using MobileMe at all as well. While it may (and is likely) be causing a problem, it's unlikely to be the only cause.

As for SMS, Apple still has that part of the iPhone completely locked down. We can not change the alerts without a hack, which we will not resort to. We will revisit the alerts if Apple changes things. Best of luck to you smile.gif
