I went on today and Sunday and there were appoximately 20-30 people playing, when usually (even on Sunday) there's hundreds playing. I was playing earlier and someone was talking about the PC patch being somehow related to this? Does anyone else have any idea what's going on? I'm playing on Mac, myself, and am concerned about the massive lack of players.
darth_vader
See my thread, paying particular attention to the last clause of the last sentence of the first post. Also, this thread's title is in truly awful taste.
Shlimazel
Ouch. Not backwards compatible? That hurts. I guess it's forgivible that I didn't notice that bit at the end...

As to the other, I thought it was funny. It's a joke I use regularly, so I didn't even think twice about it.
Mackilroy
Why is it a joke you use regularly? The Holocaust was nothing to laugh about.

But yes, the PC patch is not backwards compatible, so you're out of luck there.
Shlimazel
Well, here's a link to MacSoft that says they're aware of the problem, so maybe we mac haloites will get lucky.

And I'm not laughing at the Holocaust. It's just a pun. Since people find it offensive, I'll change the topic title.
Mackilroy
Genocide isn't a funny business either. Some puns go too far.
Shlimazel
Oh, leave it. I'm describing the sudden disappearance of a vast number of people from servers that are normally packed. I think it's appropriate to describe it in such terms since they bring to mind, surprise surprise, the sudden disappearance of people in areas that are normally packed. I'm not laughing at genocide. But I do think you're being a bit stuck up. And of course, you could tell me that I was being stuck up about the EV4 thing. And you'd be right, from your perspective. So maybe it's a little hypocritical for me to say that. But I'm going to anyway wink.gif

And if it really ticks you off, then you may feel free to stop by my Halo server, HaloASW, which is up right now, and show me how you feel in a more meaningful fashion.

Never mind, server's down now.

"cide" is used in a lot more than just "genocide". I can honestly say that I didn't even think about the Holocaust when I saw the title...

I'm thinking the original topic title was "Halocaust."

But that said, -cide is certainly not limited to genocide. Insecticide or pesticide is closer to what I was thinking of. Pesticide being especially apropos for Halo players. hector.gif

Actually, in Halo 3 players have already racked up more kills than the entire world population.

Rickton: yeah, it was Halocaust.

Too bad he got banned from Xbox Live.

Genocide is actually what was first brought to my mind. I'd recently gone through wikitroid, and it mentioned the genocide of the space dragons. Halocide reminded me of that.

Still, using 'Halocaust' was rather poor taste, in my opinion. It connects a game with a systematical massacre of people. Which doesn't really seem funny to me.
JacaByte
So what the heck is Defcon? Musical chairs, only with nukes? In case you haven't noticed, there are plenty of games out there that are linked with the murdering of people. We, as a society, seem to have become numbed to that fact. I think you're ignoring the fact that that link can be made extremely easily these days. In fact, I think it always exists, we just choose to ignore it.

(Now I've opened up a real can of worms...)
Begemotike
Thicker skin: Required.

The topic title, both times, was funny. Hopefully, MacSoft will fix this most pronto.

Sorry I wasn't around for the last game, by the way. Don't give up on me! I promise I'm around and willing to play! Just... schedule can be wacky.

No worries, Mr Motike! Just let me know when you're able to play. I can play today or on the weekend.

I'd like to think most people are able to seperate historical massmurder from digital killing.

But yeah, Defcon does make chills run down my spine at times, when I consider what the situation is in the real world and what Defcon does as a game. Maybe a reason why I haven't played it often and why I haven't purchased it. Maybe it's the clinical aesthetic with the atmospheric music combined with the muted visuals when millions die in the game. I dunno, it's amazingly well-done, but still.. a bit grisly in my eyes.

Why it happens there and not in Halo, etc, etc. I don't know.
Eegras Studios
You can't get more 'mass killings' than killing more people than are alive on the Earth like has happened in Halo 3.

I'll just quote myself.. 'cause I feel like it.

"Halocaust" is actually from a very funny video parodying the mass popularity of the Halo series.

And the word "holocaust" was in existence long before the Holocaust of the Jews.
Yorick
So you "think most people are able to seperate historical massmurder from digital killing" but using Halocaust "connects a game with a systematical massacre of people."

?

...actually...

???
mWalk
Wow, this really isn't worth arguing. Get over it.

And the swastika was in existence long before the Nazis. But they've both been drummed into our collective unconsciousness (not the Jungian one) as being connected to that particular event.
But either way it's not called Halocaust anymore, he's apologized for his lapse of taste and tried to move on so defending or attacking the subject title that isn't even the title anymore is pointless.
mWalk

I'm beginning to think you don't understand that this is pointless. If I were a moderator I'd so lock this.
Shlimazel
This topic has started to look like Just Chat. Really, Rickton has it exactly. It's pointless to argue about. Why don't you all just let this topic die? I certainly didn't intend for this to turn into a flame-fest when I made it, you know.

Hmm. I've discovered that I don't actually mind having less people. With fewer people there's a lot more sense of community in the game, and it's possible to actually recognize people from other games. It's great!

Just like Tremulous! I love games that are like that.
Shlimazel
I tried Tremulous but it wouldn't finish making the server when I tried to host a game. It seemed to just sit there. Which it sad, because it looked really cool.
Celestial Storm
Is this where I come in and say I may have been overreacting? wink.gif
