In short, my ringtones disappear on every iTunes sync. I've read some other threads and seems as though other folks have more intermittent problems.
In long, here we go, I figure the more detail the better, if it helps you:
OS X 10.5.4
iTunes 7.7.1 (11)
iPhone 3G
Firmware 2.0.1
iToner 1.0.8 (5117) (Registered)
Everything was great with new iPhone and iToner until I did the following - I'm including all this detail because I had no iToner problems until all this other crap happened:
1) Videos (bought from iTunes) suddenly wouldn't play on my iPhone despite being just fine on the computer (I got an error saying "This video cannot be played" or something similar) and having worked well before.
2) I restored the phone, but it seemed to be stuck so I quit iTunes (this was probably the BIG mistake on my part). In retrospect it was probably just taking a very long time.
3) Restored the phone again, this time, when it finished I got the "Set up the phone or back up" screen. I chose restore from backup (seemed to work fine) but after the phone restarted I got the same screen. Rinse, repeat, for a few times until I was sure it was looping. On inspection that screen says iPhone (duh, this one) has already been sync'd with this computer.
4) After deleting iTunes, iTunes prefs and reinstalling (just in case), which did not help the loop problem, I took the plunge and set up as a "new phone" with just a slightly different name. Sync'd up again, all fine. Sync'd iToner, fine. Damn video thing is fine now too.
Except now, after EVERY sync (even with no changes), my ringtones go away. Gone from the phone (they do not appear under Custom) and if I close iToner and reopen, gone from iToner. They still appear to be in the cache. If I leave iToner open they are still in the window but the Sync button is disabled as there have been no changes. Oddly enough, the ringtones, when I put them back, are still assigned as I had them to people. They still play fine. iToner doesn't and has never had any visible errors that I've seen or crashed on me. iTunes has given me some crap about not being able to install updated applications in addition to the looping debacle.
I just did another Restore (to try to solve this iToner problem) and got into the restore loop again (sigh) so have to "set up as a new phone" again.
Only thing I see in the Console is:
8/12/08 9:59:27 PM iToner[20530] Looked for HFSPromises on the pasteboard, but found none.
All kinds of iTunes garbage in the Console but I don't know if it's relevant so I won't paste it all unless someone asks...
I tried deleting the plugin bundle and the ring tone cache and re-adding all my (vanished again) ringtones as another thread described. But I still get the same behavior.
I'm kind of tempted to just wipe out EVERYTHING and not even restore from a backup but I have some app data that I don't to lose. Right now I basically have to reopen, re-add music files and resync iToner everytime I sync with iTunes, which is a drag since I <heart> having ring tones and HATE the default Marimba.
Out of ideas and would rather not muck around in iTunes guts without guidance. I thought some of this might help you replicate. If there is some other log or anything else that might help you, let me know, since it happens EVERY time I sync so replication is not a big problem for me, blargh.
Hope this helps... and that you can help me!
Thanks,
Zaz
