Bush Misspeak Cites U.S. Readiness to Harm U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush told a roomful of top Pentagon brass on Thursday that his administration would never stop looking for ways to harm the United States.

The latest installment of misspeak from a president long known for his malapropisms came during a signing ceremony for a new $417 billion defense appropriations bill that includes $25 billion in emergency funding for operations in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan.

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we," Bush said.

The Republican incumbent, who is in a tight race for reelection against Democrat John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, used the 11-minute presentation to underscore his commitment to U.S. troops.

On hand for the ceremony were Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Why do I get the feel that Cheney cuts a swich each time Bush says something like that? Or maybe they need to take the transcript of the speech and rub his face in it like a little dog and **** and say "NOOOOO!"

Is this rhetorical or are you actually looking for an answer?

And CNN just ran it.... McLellan's comment on it was something like "even the most plain-spoken people can misspeak". Of course the footage has Bush reading directly off the page so I guess he can't really 'read much very good too'!

Heh, it's good to see a Bush misspeak being taken for the unintentional humor it was, as opposed to evidence that he's mentally deficient.

I think people have moved on from "haha, look. Bush iz t3h Dumb!!1111!" and are now thinking that he is intentionally being the worst president he can possibly be.

No I think he's deficient in general and take humor that Republicans actually nominated him instead of McCain.

I've considered the possibility that the President has vision problems and really needs reading glasses (which he has been shown to wear in photographs), but vanity or other concerns prevent him from wearing them at the podium.

If he's using a teleprompter, reading off one of those isn't easy, either. Your prompter operator has to have a good feel for your reading speed, and it may be that Bush is complicating the issue by trying to alternately focus on his written copy and then focus on the teleprompter. Your eyes get less flexible as you age, and the combination of a shift in focal plane, plus going from black-on-white (print) to white-on-black (prompter) could be part of the answer.

Which, basically, a good speech class should remedy.

[Note: There did not appear to be a teleprompter at the Defense Appropriations Signing, which is where he made his latest oops.]

The video.

Sec. Rumsfeld looks like the old SNL impersonation of Ed McMahon for the Johnny Carson show.

As of this posting, the White House website gives the exact same wording in the transcript.

It is not known, therefore, if Bush read the speech as written, or unintentionally added the, 'neither do we.'

However, since Scott McClellan defended Bush's 'misspeak,' rather than clarify the statement to mean we're thinking about those things as the basis of defending agains them, it is being attributed as a gaffe.

We've gone in 50 years from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush, and from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore and John Kerry. It's very sad.

I sort of enjoyed Kerry's misspeak during his acceptance speech at the DNC where he was talking about strengthening the military and said something to the effect of: "We will double our special forces to conduct terrorist activities ......... antiterrorist activities around the world."

2 reasons:

1) He wins with coattails.
2) He drives the left nuts.

I'll grant you the first but the latter? This is a guy who ran his first campaign on the "uniter not a divider" catchphrase so it's a bit disingenuous to say that's why he was nominated instead of McCain. And further, 'pissing off the opposition' doesn't lend much gravitas to a president. 'George W Bush, Agitator in Chief'?

Seriously, and not even in hindsight: the Republicans and the nation as a whole would have been better off with a McCain Presidency than either a Bush Presidencey or a Gore Presidency.

Granted, of course, that you approve of McCain's policies, which not all Republicans do.

And, while I'm not happy with world events or, necessarily, how America has comported herself in these times, I can't say that 'Gore would have done better' or 'McCain would have done better'.

It's like watching Jeopardy at home. It looks real easy when you're sitting on the living room couch, but it's a whole 'nother thing when you're on the show. (I can say that, having been on a couple of game shows - neither of them Jeopardy.)

Nixon wasn't even that bad a president... he just took an underhanded route to get to the presidency, and wasn't exactly the most respectful of our Congress and Constitution. The administration of the country itself wasn't all that bad.
