What follows is an introductory letter of the type that would appear at the front of a website for what I call The Nevermont Project. A resource for gamers of Vampire: The Masquerade. Any comments or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated, this is the first step of a project that's been bouncing around for a few years, and hopefully in a few more it'll finally be ready to be presented to the world in it's true form. In addition the contents of this post are ©2001 Robert A. Meyers. Thank you for your time

Introduction To Nevermont

The city of Nevermont has no physical location on this Earth. In truth it does not really exist. It is, rather, a construct of many minds gathered to produce a single and entirely complete city that never has and never will be built. Everything, down to the tiniest detail, will be created by those collective minds and stored online. Every building, every person, every plant and animal, and the histroy of them is to be recorded. The purpose is so that you, the reader of this, may have a living, breathing city as an interactive backdrop for stories set in White Wolf's RPG realm of Vampire: The Masquerade

Constantly a work in progress, The Nevermont Project accepts submissions from people worldwide wishing to make a contribution to the ongoing task of cataloguing everything that doesn't exist in a fictional city. Buildings, people, histories, anything at all that can be thought of to inhabit the nights and times of this urban setting can be sent in for review by a dedicated team of moderators. After careful checking to make sure the content fits the tone of the city, that there are no conflicting placements, the submission is added to the database to become a place of lore among thousands of adventures that take place there.

Because of the vast amount of information a city contains, this project will never be truely complete. It will continue to grow and expand for many years to come, and should the inconceivable ever happen and Nevermont is completely full, then the next step is to allow submissions for any era of the cities existence, past or future. Buildings demolished, sold and and the land rebuilt, people long since forgetten after their deaths decades ago, anything which has, is or will happen.

An entire sourcebook of material, The Nevemont Project embodies the concept of the RPG. A complete fantasy world, ready to be explored with infinte possibilites...

The idea of an online city is indeed a great one (check out www.activeworlds.com if you have a PC or emulator), but imagine the logistics of it. Not only would you need a huge server to control the city, but you'd need one for player stats, player locations etc etc. From the size of your project, I imagine you'd need a server just to handle the world submissions. Now if you have the bucks to buy at least four high power servers, then more power to you.

On a purely theoretical scale, what information would the player have? Would they have stats similar to baldur's gate and diablo, or would they reflect more modern traits? What period would the city be set in? How would you prevent script kiddies hacking their characters á la battle.net? What type of perspective would the game take? Third Person? First Person?

Ladies and Gentlemen, as you know we have something special for you at
Birdland this evening. A recording for Blue Note Records...

Let's take it back to the concrete streets, original beats and real live MC's...

I know I went through all this out with you on #ev3 but just to clear the record for everyone, Nevermont would not be interactive, it would rather be a sourcebook for people to use with the paper and pencil version of Vampire: The Masquerade. Just a reference as opposed to the massive undertaking that would be required of me to build anything interactive. Still this is good, gives me information on what I'm saying wrong in the letter. Keep it coming!
