I was asking around and it appears that there's a lot of chess players here. Well, I came up with an idea, "Webboard Chess".

Rules

I would post the first move by co-ordinates.

Someone would post back, with the co-ordinates for the next move.

You would have to say clearly, BLACK or WHITE in captials, just to prevent confusion, at the top of your post.

People would keep posting their moves as the game progressed.

Now, there would be boundries. For instance, no one would be able to post every other two times. You would post, then another 2 people would have to post before you could post again. Also, your move could come when you want after this, so you could change sides easily. You would just come up with the best move you could think of at the time.

No planning would be alloud (publically, anyway. I couldn't stop people from planning privatly, obviously). This would be very interesting as it would be almost impossible to make set plans, only taking it one move at a time.

What you would end up with is a long, drawn out battle of multiplayer, internet chess with many people at various skills.

If you would have trouble with co-ordinates, it would be wise to go into your chess program, set on co-ordinates, and play the game out. Keep updating it as you need.

------
I think it would be pretty interesting, so maybe we could give it a go. Instead of asking if it's a good idea, I'll just post the first move and see how it goes from there. A couple of people on AIM said it would be good, so I'm hoping this'll catch on.

Open-plan move, loads of possibilities.

Have fun.

Hmm, since there's no guarantee I'd be black the whole game, I suppose I probably shouldn't play Sicilian. That might lead to some screwy errors. So, I guess I'll do straight and narrow.

BLACK

BTW, standard algebraic notation is really easier than coordinate.

Uh, that word? You spelled it wrong. Yeah, that one right there, next to the period. And you're missing an apostrophe in the word "its".

Erg, true. Do you still have it? I think I've forgotten... Anyway, that would be better back at BBX. You going to play here too?

I actually still have the file saved on my hard drive...well, if we do finish it it'll be in BBX, of course.

Once this game gets underway, it would be very tempting to post moves with the intent of screwing everything up as much as possible. Not that I'd do that of course. I can't actually play chess very well, but I do know what not to do and every game I play is a reminder of that.

This would probably be quicker than a couple of weeks on the ChessWorks server ...

F-pawn == King's Gambit

== if onlly coordinates (ie e4) than it is a pawn move.
== Otherwise you have to put the first letter in (K, B, R ect)

It won't work. But hey!

BLACK

e5xf4

== King's Gambit/accepted

I learned all this from Chessmaster 4000, y'know.

(and in case anyone's interested, it's now a Bonch-Osmolovsky Defense )

I'm actually somewhat fond of the King's Gambit myself as well, at least from the white side. I play it every so often for fun when I'm in a mood to try something different.

In the spirit of unrelated: I'm really starved for people to play outside of school, and really wish that people were actually on the chessworks server (I'll be on for at least another hour, hint, hint).
