www.thegia.comWahoo! This means that FF is staying with Sony and the Playstation 2.

This means, I assume, no FF for the GameCube? That isn't good for the non-Sony people among us ...

it doesn't mean anything, Sega is developing games for both the GameCube and the Xbox as well as the PS2.

Actually, FFXI is going to be as multi-platform as possible: As of now, only the PS2 (WOOT!) and PC are scheduled. I'm expecting that the X-Box and Dreamcast (maybe) will be picked up also. (and Mac... or else....)

What does Sega have to do with this? Sega isn't going to be making consoles anymore and it will focus soley on games/software. As far as I know sony doesn't own any of Sega.

Did you even read the article, it says that Square's marquee products will remain exclusive to the Playstation. I translate that as: FFXI (and all folowing FFs) won't be multi-platform.

Read the lastest interviews and previews of XI at Gamespot. They say that XI is a MMORG of hugely mass porportions, and will be as multi-console as possible. XII WILL, however, stay on PS2 (WOOT!)

Actually, it doesn't say that. Here is an excerpt.

From afore mentioned article:
Sony's new stake in Square will undoubtedly have repercussions for the company's output and, at the very least, should assure that Square's marquee titles do indeed remain PlayStation exclusive.

Last time I heard, the word should does not mean will. There is still a good chance that FF will appear upon other consoles and systems. Besides, saying they will remain "exclusive" titles, in conjuction with FF.... you can get FF7, FF8 and FF Tactics on PC. Exclusive in the gaming industry usually means that it will be initially released upon that platform, but with the option of realeasing it on other platforms, depending upon popularity, technology etc.

I will (tentatively) agree with Ironhorse here in stating that it is unlikely that FFXI will appear upon other platforms because of this deal. I just don't believe that it is not going to happen, because of the availability and success of other FF titles on non-PSX/PS2 platforms. And of course, there will be other FF titles, and I find it very hard to believe that not one will be released upon any platform other than that owned by Sony. 19% is not a dominant share of a company.

Actually, Sony said the following day in a Q/A that they would not force Square into developing only for the PS2. Of course, now there is that extra little incentive to do so. In any case, current PS2 userbase = near 18 million. That's a pretty steep hill for the XBox and Gamecube to climb, no to mention most of Square's target demographic is already on the PS2. It doesn't really make sense financially for them to invest in licensing for the XBox or GC.

However, I think we may still see some Square ports to the GC, since Nintendo seems to be holding a GBA license as a carrot if Square will get some big-name RPGs on the Gamecube...
