For some reason, whenever I connect to (local) friend's computer(Windows), with UT, the does some weird stuff.
Everything runs ok until our players get near each other(IE, can see each other), then things will get extremely laggy for whoever isn't hosting, horrible warping and weapon lag make it unplayable. I can connect to PCs and Macs all over the US and beyond with little or no lag, yet I can't connect two comps in the same town. Anyone know what might be causing this?

hmmm, I have absolutely NO idea but a (most likely wrong) guess that I will throw in the dakr would be that maybe UT strains servers so much that when you and your friend play locally, you are using the same server and it gets jacked up. Yell at me if you want.

Our ISP supports thousands of people. No significant strain would be placed on the connection by any single computer.

You probably know that extra processor power is required by a computer to host a UT game. The reason you can play other UT players in other areas is that your connecting to them via a dedicated host server.
However, I don't know how much of an affect this would have, or if it would account for the lagging you've reported. Try this page. Its information from Epic Games on setting up a UT server. It does mention problems with the win2K TCP/IP stack causing high ping rates.

Hope this helps

yeah, basically, if you want it to weok well, find a server that is not full and both of you connect to it. Otherwise you'll have to set up a dedicated server. Note: if the people that run the computers ar your school (if you go to school) dont know anything about computers you can set up a dedicated server at the school, ive done this at my school with litter games.

So basically, hosting and playing UT on the same computer is a bad plan. A host should be a computer you just connect to?

Not nesaseraly. A few of the guys at work and I play across our LAN network, and we all normaly have a ping numbering in single figures. Though if you're connecting remotly accross the net, then yeh I suppose Rat is right. Best solution; get two machiens in the same room together on a network - preferably an Ethernet one - and away to go; no special software needed.

Yeah, this summer when we were between tech administrators we set up a 500 Mhz g4 with the RAm from 3 iMacs + its own, right where the t1 comes into the school. It was running for weeks and a great way to commune as 1 of my friends and I were out of town but still had net access and UT.

In that case. Would a Powercenter 150 with a 450mhz G3 processor upgrade card and 179M of RAM make a decent dedicated UT server?

I would say yes. As a dedicated server, it will have to do none of the intensive graphics processing that bogs slower computers down. I've hosted good games on my iMac Rev. B (233 Mhz) with 96 MB of RAM. Playing on that machine is a whole other story.

I would recommend that you make an extension set with absolutely nothing you don't need to run the game, give UT all the free memory, and definately not try to use it for anything else while people are online.

I set up the upgraded powercenter as a dedicated server and attempted again. No lag on my end(I am in the same house though), but my friend's ping was around 2000, and it was unplayable at his end.
He's running Windows ME. Anyone have reason this is happening?

tell your friend not to run windows ME, it might not be the problem, but he shouldnt be running such a horrid OS anyways...
