Alright, I got the demo of this game off the Sims CD, and I've become addicted. Going to buy it at CompUSA later today.

Anyway, when you eliminate a faction, it says "their leader has been captured and is ready for your personal interrogation."

Are they just saying this for effect or can you actually interrogate him? If so, how?

Just for effect. In the full version you get to see them tortured though.

Get the full game. Now. It's really a great game, seriously. Much, much better than any other turn-based game (except probably Civ III, which came out yesterday).

I went to CompUSA today, but they were already closed when I got there

I got addicted the moment I double clicked on the demo. I don't know how I'll survive until tommarow...when I'll hopefully get to CompUSA before they close.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find it worthwhile. And you'll have the added bonus of not having to pay $50 for it, like I did ...

I recomend that you not buy that game. I made that mistake and lost many hours of my sleep and a great portion of my life over it.

I've heard whisperings that a OS X version might be in the works.

Actually, University will probably get planet busters first. With their incredible research capabilities, they get every technology -- and thus every unit -- first.

At least I always get Planet Busters first when I play University. The Belivers never know what hit them

I like to play long games on huge maps. I had one that I spent many long hours on. It was down to me (Gaians), the Believers and the Hive. I had practically won when the hive took out my 5 best citys and 2 consecutive global warming crippled the rest.

If we have enough people who play on the board, maybe we should set up a play-by-email game.

My current game sounds a lot like that...(no one tangles with me, even though I don't have planet busters...)

For me, it probably hasn't evolved too much...here's a summary:

University (Me): PACT with Peacekeepers, Morganites. TOF with Hive (they almost surrendered). V'detta with Gaians and Believers (both too far away to cause serious damage).

Current council votes: 308.
Base Count: About 30.
Techs: On average, I've got all level 11 techs.
Military: Small, but hefty. Use Clean Reactors a lot so as not to interfere with my gargantuan terraforming operations (I used to have 3 formers/base before hive Needlejets wiped about half out).

Best Weapon: Plasma Shard (apart from missile/buster)
Best Armor: Probability Sheath
Current Tech: Quantum Power

Summary of Factions:

Gaians: Located on one Island south east of map. Half as powerful as University, V'detta with Hive and University. Pact with Believers.

Believers: Located on large semi-continent island, along with the peacekeepers. About as powerful as the Gaians, second largest military, sh*tty technology. Pact: Gaians. V'detta: Peacekeepers, Hive, University.

Peacekeepers: Located on the west half of center continent. Fighting a losing battle against the believers, even though current tech is superior. War with: Believers. Pact: University. (NOTE: I support 'em heavily)

Morganites: Located on island just under Gaians. Slightly less powerful than the Believers/Gaians. Current wealth about 1900 EC's. Pact: Gaians, University. War: Hive.

Spartans: Tiny faction, have three bases left.

Hive: Annoying penisheads. I'm at war with them for 10 years with 20 year gaps.

I built the Voice of Planet in 4 turns. Got about 54 bases now, every single tech. 950 council votes...hmmm.

Well, OF, I sort of bought it now (for PC. Mac games are very hard to come by here, and the prices are high). But AC is a great game. Though somewhat bound to a single storyline, it is hard to "feel" the game. It was somewhat too restrictive for my taste.

I like the unit design, though. That was a nice touch. As for the colony leaders, I don't think you can interrogate them even though it sais they are captured for interrogation. I haven't managed to. Nor have I seen them get tortured... Unfortunately

But does it have a South Park parody with Morgan and Lal in it like Longevity Vaccine? I think not. Watching that video makes up for the dullness of dipolmatic victory (you really need the double votes it gives you to do it, or at least I do, since I never play Lal.)

Heh heh, ever since I got SMAC (back when it first came out), I've been playing nothing but University. I'm only now beginning to experiment with the Gaians. Here's how my current game looks (Librarian difficulty level, small planet)

Gaians- me. Very advanced DISCOVER technology and a lot of BUILD technology. Very tough army (most of them demon-boil mindworms I captured), but not a lot of naval or Air units. I have 7 bases located around the Freshwater Sea (where I started out), and the west slope of Pholus Ridge. I'm at war with the believers.

Hive- Been to war with them on and off. I only recently totally dominated them- they surrendered and now have an everlasting pact of service to me. Yang does whatever I want him to. 3 very big bases. He's at war with the Believers.

University- Somewhat large territory, 5 bases, weak army, but just just enough to wage a war with the believers. ToF'd with me.

Peacekeepers- Pretty much staying out of it. They're dotted about the volcano like warts on a pig's butt, terraforming like mad. Currently at war with noone, and if you confront him, he's submissive.

Morganites- Currently at war with the believers, but losing badly. At one point in the game, they had gazillions of boreholes and triggered global warming. The mind worms and locusts of chiron wrecked them something awfull.

Spartans- Died a very painfull death when the oceans rose without her bases having pressure domes.

Believers- At war with virtually everyone on the map, and getting a royal thumping on all sides.

That's boring...anyway, why do you think I was playing University? I love that little sequence at the end (after the movie)...displaying autobiographies...

I just bought SMAC for a friend for $9.99, but that was the peecee version. If you look hard enough, the mac version should be somewhere for around that. On the other hand, this one was missinging the manual which, unlike many games, includes a lot of stuff you'll want to know.

Civ 3 is around $40 - $50, as it's a new game. Wait a couple of months, I'm sure it will get cheaper (and anyway, the Mac version isn't out yet).
