Full Version: [ANN] ASW chess server updates

As I mentioned in the topic about ChessWorks 3, I've upgraded my server to the newest version of the ChessWorks software, which is a totally rewritten version of ChessWorks. Unfortunately, the newer version is not compatible with older versions of ChessWorks, so all of you ASW chess server denizens will have to upgrade. Looking at the new version, it looks pretty nice -- it's carbonized, and even has a Windows version -- so I think this will be a good move for the server. For a little while I will keep the old version 2 server up, so it isn't too sudden a change, but the old server will die soon.

For the uninitiated, directions to connect to the chess server:

1) Download ChessWorks 3 from here for the appropriate platform.
2) Open the "ChessWorks3" application (at least, that's what it's labeled for the normal PPC version for OS 9.x), and check if there's already a tracker window open. It will say "ChessWorks Tracker" in the title bar if it is open. If it isn't open, go to the File menu, then select New Tracker.
3) Click on "Connect" in the "ChessWorks Tracker" window. You'll get a window labeled "Connect to Server". In the window, enter "24.53.185.92" as the address, and leave the port as it is set by default (2405). (The first time you do this, you might want to save it as a bookmark by going to the bookmarks menu, and clicking "Save bookmark". Title it whatever you want, and save it in the default folder. Then the next time you open ChessWorks, just click on the bookmark titled whatever you called it in the menu, so you won't have to type it again.)
4) The first time you connect, ChessWorks will tell you "Account does not exist", and then tell you it is creating an account for you. It will ask you for an account name -- use whatever nickname strikes your fancy, but nothing offensive, please -- and a password which you will need to use every time you connect to the server. ChessWorks will tell you "Account has been created" when you complete this step. Then click connect again, enter the server name as you did above, enter the nickname you chose, and enter your password. You will need to enter your nickname and a password every time you connect to the server in the future.
5) Finally, you're done! Click "connect" and you should get a message saying "Welcome to ChessWorks 3." There you'll see everyone else who is online (usually me, though I won't be at the computer, so you will almost never get any response from me). Click on someone's user name in the nickname list, and click "Play" or "Watch" (which will appear if they are already in a game) to play against them or watch their current game. Go to News in the Tracker menu to view a forum-style news board where I, and your fellow players, will be posting relevant news. This is basically it, you're done!

Have fun with the server, everyone; old users will find it a welcome change, and new ones should find it nice as well. I hope to see everyone there.

I think I had to log in about 3 times before it got the account set up correctly. If the problems are on that line, keep trying a bit.

OK, sorry for all the problems, folks, but you're just going to have to use CW 2.5 for now, as the CW3 server is causing problems. Quite simply, it won't launch, saying that I'm running it on a locked volume, which I'm not. As soon as I manage to get this fixed, I'll post here ... Sorry again.

OK, I have good news and bad news. Good news, CW3 server is running again happily. Bad news, I had to reinstall the server so everyone who's created an account already will have to recreate it. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it just wasn't working otherwise.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

The server's IP address has been changed by the ISP, so the old address (chess.ambrosia.net) will not work until andrew updates it! Until then, you will have to use the raw new IP address, 24.53.185.92 . Sorry for the inconvenience; I'll send a mail to da boss ASAP.

Try it now ... The power went out yet again, and the server died when the computer started up, yet again. This means that -- again -- people will have to create new accounts. This seems to be a very persistent bug in the server software; I'll be bugging the folks at Ekim about it, but I can't really do anything about it.

::sigh:: Guess what happened earlier today? Yep, the server died again. I've gotten assurances from the folks at Ekim that they'll be working on a fix, but they haven't given me an ETA or anything. Until something like that comes out, you guys are just going to have to keep creating new accounts ... (If it's any consolation, I have to do the same.)
