Full Version: Best Console?

I've recently been interested in purchasing a new game console, since the last one I bought was Sega Genesis back in the day. A friend of mine recieved X Box for Christmas and is really excited about it. I got to play it for a little bit and the graphics look pretty good, plus the games are not all that bad. I've been doing a little research to check out Game Cube and PS2. Just wondering what all of you think.

I personally like the X Box, the Game Cube has some pretty weak games so far, and although in the beginning it doesn't really matter I think it looks like X Box will continue to release good games. I was never really into PlayStation games, so I think that might be my last choice.

Anybody else?

Well normaly I would just say buy a PS2 because I think it's the best system out at the moment, but you said you weren't interested in Playstation games... So I recommend buying an XBOX, it's got some really good games and I hear that alot of the good games from the other consoles are being ported to it anyway. I wouldn't suggest buying a GC(GameCube) because the only really good game out for it is the Starwars title and it doesn't even have a DVD player. So buy an XBOX, unless you want Final Fantasy which I think makes the Playstation 2 worth buying.

About the DVD player thing, I've heard that the XBox's DVD player is a peice of low-end junk. The PS2 however, is very good at DVD playback. I have seen a PS2 play DVDs and it was just like a real DVD player. I cannot verify the XBox info as I have never seen one, but its made by microsoft...

The Game Cube doesn't have too many good games out right now, I'll give you that. I own a Game Cube and the Star Wars game, Super Monkey Ball, and Crazy Taxi. However, I'm hoping Perfect Dark Zero will be worth the wait

Game Cube! I got one for Christmas and there are some weak games, but then theres Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and more to come like a new Zelda, Perfect Dark Zero, Mario Sunshine, Mario Carte 2 and more! Also the graphics rival the XBox if not better and the controllers are less bulky so you can play for longer periods of time before Carple Tunnel Syndromes comes into affect. All in all I vote for the Game Cube then PS2 close behind it!

Gamecube! Super Smash Bros. Melee! Mr. Game and Watch, the coolest fighter in any game! I love his death sounds so much I don't even care when I lose with this guy. Rogue Squadrons pretty sweet too, the Zelda games gonna rock, same with eternal darkness, the new metroid, Soul Caliber 2, and a host of other games. The controllers awesome too, a lot better then the x-box controller(which is the size of the Gamecube console).

Gamecube. X-Box has the best graphics capabilities, but the Gamecube has by far impressed me the most...

Actually, the PS2 has problems playing quite a few DVD's out there. So far in a few tests the X-Box plays more DVDs plus some of the newer playstation 2 games are going toi require you to buy the hard drive and the network card so you could end up paying quite abit more to play some games. The X-Box has both nstalled even though I favor it here's my advisery.

you like simplistics games that require alot of jumping or puzzle games: Game Cube
you're interested in buying alot of games of all kinds of genre's: PS2
high-end graphics or oneline only games, don't like to buy extra peripherals like memory cards and multi-taps:X-Box

Here's what should be cheapest as well in the long run

1. Game Cube
2. X-Box
3. The PS2 is most expensive because you have to buy so many peripherals for it to get the most out of it.

atezun-I beg to differ on you veiw that the PS2 is more expensive because it requires more peripherals than the other consoles.
First, there are no games that require an HDD to play.
Second, the Xbox requires users to buy a 30$ DVD peripheral to play DVDs.
Third, your statement "The PS2 is most expensive because you have to buy so many peripherals for it to get the most out of it." doesn't really make sense. And if you are refering to the HDD, there has only been one game so far that might need a HDD.

yes Ironhorse I know that there aren't that many games yet that use the hard drive. I was more refering to having to buy memory cards and multitaps. It isn't that much more expensive at first but if you're someone like me who rents often and saves often and likes multiplayer games. I ended up spending alot of money on memory cards and a multitap though you are right not many games use the hard drive but i was more refering to about 2 years down the road. And if you wanted to get enough memory cards right now to equal your hard drive it would cost you approximatley $50,000 dollars canadian so even if it isn't cheaper for some people it's a better value for your money

yeah, the PS2 doesn't impress me very much. The only games I thought were really worth it were GTA 3 - and that's coming out on th Xbox. Plus, the Xbox is gonna have a LoTR and a Matrix game.

Don't get an X-Box! My friend spent 300 bucks for a heavy, black box with 1 controller the size of your head. he then spent $50 for Halo. All total, with tax, it's almost $400! What a waste. Plus the controllers are huge.

What's the deal with the Gamecube. Everybody says it's going to be geared toward the younger generation, but some of the games you guys were listing sounded somewhat mature (metroid, matrix, soul calibar (sp)). And also, does anyone know if Nintendo is going to release some good r.p.g's, or are they going to pull a Nintendo 64 and only release 3 good ones. I really want to buy a gamecube just because I have trust in Nintendo, but Playstation 2 has the final fantasy series.

p.s. Is Final Fantasy 12 going to be multiplayer, because if it is, I'm going for the playstation 2.

Dude, Both of the games are on Gamecube and X-Box. X-Box flat out sucks. It's too big, too expensive, you have to buy a DVD player to go with it (A sucky one, at that. If you want the Ultimate gaming system and DVD's, get a Gamecube and a 75 dollar DVD player. I might add that this allows you to buy a 64 mb memory card and still be under the X-Boxes cost), It has Huge controllers, all of the games are sucky (minus Halo and EA sports games), It's made by Microsoft, The buttona are 3 millimeters wide, and it can barely fit in an entertainment center. Also the lie that you can play computer games on the X-Box. The Gamecube is portable, cheap, playable online with a very cheap 56k modem extra (soon 100 and 300k) has a very fast processer compared to the X-Boxes, and everything comes cheap with it. After all this, is it really hard to decide between the two? PS2 is close behind Gamecube, but just isn't good enough to be better.

Get a gamecube... okay, so on paper the X-box has more graphics capabilities, but on paper the Sega Saturn was more powerful than the Playstation, but which one had better games? Power isn't everything, and we all know that Nintendo are the Kings of Consoles. They know what makes a great game, not what makes a great profit. Plus, the controllers aren't the size of a person's head, and the console itself doesn't have a cooling fan which sound's like a jet engine off a 747.
Also, although the tech specs show the X-Box with greater graphical prowess, apparently the cube is easier to program for and they can get more out of it... it's not based on microsoft technology, which helps, plus the processor is IBM made, based on technology from mac computers, and lets just remember that the G4s are classed as a) super computers, and cool.gif dangerous weapons. Or at least the were originally. Bottom line is, the X-Box is not great. It's bad. Plus, you're missing out on some of the greatest franchises the console market has ever see, e.g. Mario, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda etc. need I go on? I doubt nintendo are going to do another N64, because if they do, I fear they'll go the same way as sega have, except they don't have a mega-strong arcade department to help.
And if you still can't decide... get a Game Boy Advance. Best damn games machine ever. Mario Kart Super Circuit is ACE!

Well, personally I like the Playstation 2. I used to have faith in Nintendo before the Virtual Boy (ack) and the N64. One thing you guys are overlooking is the the Gamecube uses 1.5Gb minidiscs. This may sound like a lot but a Sony DVD holds 6Gb and the dual layer DvD's that the X-Box uses can hold 9Gb. Nintendo pulled the same "our-way-or-the-highway" approach to game format with the N64 and messed everything up. The only reason Square went to Sony in the first place was because the could fit FF 7 onto CD's and not cartridges. X-Box is alright but too pricey and the Playstation 2 will get most games on X-Box and Gamecube plus their own PS 2 only games such as GT3- A-Spec, MGS2, and the almighty Final Fantasy Series. I'm going wherever Square goes.

Agreed. The Super Nintendo was the best gaming console ever. Not because of technical superiority, but because the games on it were awesome... everything from Super Mario World to Final Fantasy III (VI). I spent so much time playing every game imaginable on that system, and I still play it fairly often at home, even though I have a Playstation, N64, and Gamecube. Nothing beat that system in terms of gameplay.

However, if you're looking at next-generation consoles, the Gamecube is the best (assuming you're willing to sacrifice the ability to play DVDs on it).

The only good games that I have played on the X-Box that I liked were Cel Damage, Halo, NHL Hitz, and NFL Fever (I think that's the name). While I don't know about Halo, Cel Damage is being ported to the Cube, Hitz was ported to the Cube, and NFL Fever is inferior to Madden 2002 on the Cube. There are also some other great games for the Cube, like Rogue Squadron, SSX Tricky, and Smash Brothers. The Gamecube hardly has "weak" games. If anything, games like Fusion Frenzy, Oddworld, and some animal-racing game make the X-Box weak.

Add in the fact that the Gamecube is $200, as opposed to $300 for the X-Box, and you're golden.

No way. The Playstation 2 is an upgraded Playstation, which is an upgraded Super Nintendo. Technologically, it's behind, and the games don't make up for that. The X-Box and Gamecube are both better systems than the Playstation 2 in terms of technology. Aside from that, the developers are moving to the Gamecube (I'm a fan of it... can you tell? ), including a team of Square's best programmers who left the company (which is going under, and is only held up by Sony's financial support). The Playstation is dying.

I actually find that Gamecube graphics are more "real". The graphics on the X-Box are too polished, and they often look fake.

Do you own a Gamecube? Last time I checked, SSX Tricky, Madden 2002, Rogue Squadron, and Road Rage didn't fall into those categories.

Nintendo has never really released any RPGs, it's always been third-party companies. Judging from the RPG development on the Game Boy Advance, developers are making RPGs for Nintendo again.

Personally, I prefer the Gamecube controller, since the left third of the N64 controller was never used, anyway. The one thing I don't like about it is the positioning of the Z-trigger, which I think should be placed under the left analog stick.

The only developer whose games I actually care about is Square, so I pretty much get whatever console they're on. In this case, that's the PS2. Any other good games that come for it are just bonus, but it seems like the PS2 has more blockbusters in the pipe than the other two combined.

Oh, and one more word: Xenosaga.

What left analog stick? There is only 1 analog stick on the N64 controller. And Playstation is actually quite technologically advanced. The playstation is NOT dying. Its still going quite strong. Personally, I prefer PS2 and Gamecube anyday.

PS 2 is pretty advanced, but why did they only put TWO CONTROLLER PORTS!!!! AHHHHH!!! PS2 could have been hands down the best system if they had given it four ports. Now you have to by a multi-tap and most games won't even support it. If you want good party games now you have to look at GC or X-Box. PS2 is still the place to be for RPG's and single player games though.

Number: I know! If you look at the front of the PS2, there is obviously space for another 2 slots (run your finger over from the existing two slots...note the empty plastic right under the disc drive). I almost suspect that that will be an ace in the hole that they'll pull out at a later date, but the two slots thing was basically poor, lazy engineering on their part.

Then again, I have an N64 and several good multiplayer games for that. The PS2 is mostly for RPGs.

I'll say PS2. The PlayStation has the best reputation for great games. I don't see anything on the XBox that interests me that isn't on the other consoles as well, and Rogue Leader is the only appeal the GameCube holds, seeing as I'm quite thoroughly sick of the Mario saga by now.

I recently hooked up my Super Nintendo for the first time in 18 months in the basement, and I find myself playing it more than the N64. Super Mario All-Stars, the Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Super Tennis -- all these hold a death grip on my gaming heart.

Ok! I am getting the Xbox because:

---------------------------------------

1. It has superior graphics and speed!
2. I like the games!

---------------------------------------

I am getting Halo and in a couple of months Unreal Championship is comming out and Unreal Tournament was awsome so I have to get Unreal Championship!

Also, alot of the other games look pretty cool!

---------------------------------------

PS2 - i dont like it because I never really went for playstation games and I love the xbox games

GameCube - I dont like it because I feel it is the weakest system out there! Even though graphics arent everything its like comparing atari to super nintendo! Plus There is only two games I would get:

Alright
1) Gamecube is just as powerful as the X-Box graphically, it's using the same chip architecture as the Apple's G line. So saying it's like comparing Atari to SNES, well that's just dumb. They're all 128 bit systems.
2) The Gamecube uses S-3 texture compression so it can fit up to six times the amount of texture per MB of space.
3) I guess this is a matter of preference but I feel there are just as many if not more good games for the PS 2 as the X-Box. I mean you have GT 3, Grand Theft Auto III, Metal Gear Solid 2, FFX, Ico, Jak and Daxter and that's just the PS2 ONLY titles that I'm mentioning.

I'm not saying X-Box is a bad system, but to hail it as the end all answer to systems... please. All the systems have pluses and minuses.
