I read a post on the macgamer.com forum today on the subject of a bug in the game Alice. Brad Oliver directed the writer to check out his public iDisk for an early beta patch-I decided to take a look too, though I haven;t had any problems with Alice. What do you suppose I found there?

Alpha Centauri Carbon. It's at v 1.5.3b2 compared to 1.5.2 for the newest version I had. Here are the contents of the Read-Me:

***
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire
Carbon Version Beta

System Requirements:
• MacOS 8.6 or later, or MacOS X 10.1 or later. MacOS 10.0.x is not supported.
• CarbonLib 1.0.4 or greater. Has not been tested extensively with CarbonLib versions less than 1.2.5.
• A PowerPC Macintosh, 180MHz 603 or better.
• 32 Megabytes of free memory (you may need to enable virtual memory).
• A monitor and video card capable of a resolution of 800x600 at 256 colors.
• The original SMAC/SMAX game

Tech Support/Reporting Problems:

The Carbon versions of SMAC/SMAX are currently unsupported betas. Use them at your own risk. If you run into a problem not listed below, please send an e-mail describng the problem and if possible steps to reproduce it to: bradman@pobox.com.

Known Issues with the Carbon versions not present in the regular versions

• Sounds do not fade out smoothly.
• Netplay and GameRanger support are missing
• When running in a window, some animations do not update under MacOS X. Examples: the ship does not crash at the start of the game, the menus do not slide out - they pop out, etc. If this bothers you, play the game fullscreen.

Enjoy-I know it made my day.

Oops, I neglected to tell you his public iDisk is named 'boliver.'

Yeah I know I could have editted, but I thought I'd give the topic a little bumpage.

That's awesome! That's one of the games I play a lot, it will be so much nicer in OS X rather than Classic. Running it in classic always had some graphical problems. Plus it's nice not to have to start up Classic.

Don't go to school to learn that 2+2=4. If you do you're missing the point. Go to school to learn how to add, then figure out that 2+2=4.

Anyone who hasn't bought more RAM probably has just 128 or god forbid 64 MB of RAM. Once you are running OSX, that is cut down to almost nothing.

That said, there's no reason to be in that situation. I got 256 MB for $20-you can double or triple base RAM for next to nothing.

or you could buy a new Power Mac with 1.5 gb of ram and dual 1-Ghz processors.
*sizzle* damn, drooling on the keyboard again.

Much cheaper to stip down the RAM and buy it third party, given what Apple charges for it.
