I've hard that Battlenet at times can be quite slow and with my slow modem I am hoping to get around that If I want to do a 2 player, online game of Starcraft. I know that you can play the game Modem to Modem (not using a 3rd party server) so long as you are logged on to the net and the other person knows what to do. However, I don't how one would go about doing this, and was curious if there was anyone on the board here that had done it before. Well, any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

whenever i played my friend modem to modem, i would dail his phone number, or he would dial mine, and we would connect that way. if you were logged on to the net, it would never work. however, playing people over the modem can be expensive, especially if the person your calling is in another area code.

steps i always used were:
1) don't connect to the internet, keep your phone line open. start up starcraft.
2) choose multiplayer, and then click on the modem option.
3) type in the phone number (and i think the name) for the person you are calling. (as a note, the other person should have selected "create game" and selected a map"
4) hit connect.

it always worked erratically for me, filled with disconnects and being unable to connect for hours. good luck, and i hope this helped you.

Thanks! Luckily for me he is in the area, and I have unlimited long distance on the weekends. Now, lets say I want to host the game on my computer - do I create the game and choose the map and wit for him to dial me, or do I still have to dial him?

Well, you can also do it over TCP/IP, if you wish. This way, you can have multiple players, although you do have to be on the net when playing thus. You just give the people joining your IP number, and they then choose 'TCP/IP' under the type of game they want to play, where they then enter your IP number to join.

I know what you mean by IP's and all, but how do I know what mine is? I've heard that you can see it when log on to do a multi-player game, but I'm still unclear. Do you think that it would be faster to do modem to modem or TCP/IP than it would be to just go with Battlenet? Oh, Begemotike, we've gotta do a game soon! I've practiced a bit with the demo, but I can assure you that you'd wipe me clean - We'll have to team up for the first round, play against some comps.

yeah, if you host the game, set up the map and wait for him to connect. it was never consistant for me, though, so don't get too bummed out if you don't connect half the time.

How are your phone lines in general? What speed is your modem and what does it usually connect at? I know our phone lines are really bad. I have a 33k modem - I dial up at 24k and the "test your speed sites" say that I only browse 20.8k. I don't know.

I'd love to play a game with you! And in general, I really dislike playing against humans... I almost always play against computers as it is. Except for sometimes, when I run across real morons (ur a **** u spel!) then I enjoy doing a bit of the whole 'wrath of justice' on them type of thing. Although somtimes they hand me my butt on a plate too...

At any rate, I think You should try all the different methods of multiplay, and see what works for you!

To find your IP address from outside of Starcraft: Once connected to the internet, go to the TCP/IP control panel. It will have it there.

lol - so I've heard about their spelling. Well, my TCP/IP control panel is disabled right now - my Father's choice (I think he's trying to cut back on the operating size of the OS) so I guess I'll see it when I run Starcraft. We'll have to plan a game maybe for next Friday. Of course I'm about to get my report card, and I'm having very bad premonitions, so I may be a permanent fixture in my room for the next month. Hopefully not, but we'll see. How about sometime in the afternoon for you, 4:00 or 5:00? I may still have the demo, so we'll see what that does (hopefully not, the whole version is on the way) and the time difference could make things more complex, but it shouldn't be a problem. Well, we'll just hope that I get C's instead of D's ( ). If everything works out then I look forward to playing with you!
