Full Version: I have a hard time believing osx is built for games

Everything tells me that "OSX is for games, period" but i have a hard time believing that when my games cease to function corectly. I am currently trying to fix numbers of problems like:
Myth3, in carbon mode, it freezes at random points in the game, so I cant go any farther in the game, thisis extremely frustrating. In classic mode, the mouse is all jittery and i cant even move at all.
Oni, in carbon mode, i cant move 360 degrees, this is just messed. In classic, my mouse is all jittery like in myth 3, note that in os9 just browsing through it my mouse is not jittery, so this is not the case with all classic things.
D2 (demo): Classic(as referred to as running classic apps off of OSX) i cant sprint. Classic through OS9, fine.
Can anyone solve these problems, i dont see what good OSX is for as a gaming platform if my games dont work, i fear that other games i get such as wolfenstein will have similar problems

Classic mode is always going to be shaky with games, since they aren't taking advantage of any X features.

OS X games can be great, it all depends on the job done by the developer, the system has pretty much everything needed for gaming currently.

I wouldn't worry about Wolfenstein. Even the OS X beta/demo ran extremely well under OS X.

You can get a cocoa version of Oni here, which may help.

I wouldn't have said that bigs were the problem with OS X gaming, I would have said that speed was. I have not played one game that runs faster in X than 9 (including Myth III!), and most of them are a great deal more sluggish, especially Deimos Rising. I'm playing on a 500 Mhz iBook too.

Those problems don't indicate that MacOS X isn't built for games - rather, they indicate that games aren't built for MacOS X.

It also sounds like you have a funky unsupported USB mouse. Personal, ignorant, petty theory.

OS X is a strange new world. Many companys don't want to spend the time to rewrite the game in cocoa. So they just carbonize which dosn't work as well under X. OS X has some problems of its own that need to be solved before everything works.
Its all a matter of time.
In one or two years things will look brighter.

OSX is a gaming operating system, but it doesnt support any old games very well....(unless theyve been rewritten) but games like PoG and Wingnuts work just fine because they were written for the operating system.
