for the past two hours, i have been playing deus ex. did i like it? lets go through it step by step:

1) after the insane start-up time, i finally got to start the tutorial. while interesting, and somewhat easy to figure out (after you figure out how to use the keyboard), the graphics suck, i don't like playing twister on my keyboard, and the pistol shoots for ****.

2) so i finish the first two training levels after blowing myself up with the mines twice. then i get into covert ops. oh joy, sneaking around on my ass, running into 3-d characters with faces that looked like they got hit with a sledge hammer. then they see me and hit an alarm. 20 minutes later, i pass the level more annoyed that overjoyed.

3) then i get to start, and after more insane loading time (slower than a hundred yard dash) i get to see a crappy movie. my life is complete. now more loading time and i'm in new york. lets start to shoot stuff WITH ONLY 6 BULLETS. great. so i go find some crates, figure out how to use the guns (shooing at the birds is fun, a point if you can hit them) and i get started. 10 minutes later i die. no biggie, i think, lets just start over.

4) <insert movie and load-up time> lets try this again. so i go up through the mission, make it to the back of the statue of liberty (note that here, i'm missing one leg as it was shot off.) slowly but surely i walk up the back end until i make it to the entrance. guns ablazing i walk in and get my other leg blown off. some punk shoots me, calls me a fascist, and runs (i thought that was actually cool and realistic). then i walk up the steps, or rather bump my way up the steps (a la lt. dan) and then get shot and lose an arm, my torso and my head. then i stopped.

how do you think i felt about it? if you liked it, great, i think i'll stick to rainbow-6.

Weird I got to step 4 in less than 5 minutes but I think I skipped the tutorial, anyway that game wasn't that bad. But I guess that the graphics best before has expired

Man technology is flying by. The reviewers gave this game all the raze and sparkling things and now it is no better than Pong. It's crazy.....

And then there were the toe-socks...
the Necromicon
hehehe...you must suck at that game.

I can complete that level without firing a single gun.

um, what kind of graphics card do you have?

My first reaction to Deus Ex was about the same as yours (except the graphics bit. Unless you have a crappy comp. Deus Ex has awesome graphics). I have now played the game all the way through twice, and consider it one of the best games ever made. The trick is that you can't treat it like a traditional shooter. The fact that you only get 6 bullets at the beginning should tell you somthing. Also, you can avoid the long loading times by periodically saving during the game (that way you won't have to watch the intro movie again). Once you get into it, the game has an awesome plot, and a mind blowing amount of depth.

i have an ati rage 128 card. i still think the graphics need work

as it is, i'm still playing it, might as well get the most out of it. i'm somewhere on level two, have to find the power and kill it. kinda crazy. the loading time is still lame, even though i save every five minutes. for some reason the voices kicked out on me, though the volume is all the way up. its not the hard, and falling and dying is fun.

Deus Ex = Best game I've ever played. Good graphics (if you've got the stuff), actual tactical challenges, strategy in both character developement and inventory management. And I haven't even gotten into the details on the number of plain gameplay choices there are. There are so many decisions to make and possible outcomes, it's mind-boggling.

The voices go away if the game isn't getting enough memory. Try increasing the memory allocation for Deus Ex.

Antihero no real offense meant, as this can easily be changed with a good 4 hour stretch of gaming, but from your review your problem is that you suck at FPS's. Sorry, but playing Deus Ex, I never actually died on either the tutorial or the first level, they were both very simple, just aim for the head. Deus Ex probably is one the the best *single player* FPSs on the market, period. Then again, I have a g4 733 with a geforce2.

Anithero, just curious, but what type of computer do you have? I played deus ex on an iBook and it ran wonderfully with no long start times. After beating the game several times, I consider it one of the best I have ever played. I reccomend you play around with the options menu to see if you can get it to run faster.

I think I know what your problem is.

If you can't avoid an enemy, your best choice is to take them out from a good distance, preferably with a single shot to the head and a silenced gun. In later levels, if there are no bots or comandos, feel free to go rambo. You will know by then what amounts of force are called for in a given situation.

Also, try a new video card. The graphics are the best of any UT based game I have played.

anti, you know, you could just settle down with one game (Diablo II) and then never have to play another game (Diablo II) for the rest of your life (Diablo II). Now, what could that game (Diablo II) be? Hrm. Guess you'll just have to think about it. (Diablo II)

UT is soon to be replaced by War3 though.

i made it to china town just using the dart gun, which i like. the sniper rifle is decent, but shakes like a bitch, and the recoil kicks it up.

as for first person shooters, this was one of the first ones i've ever played (the other being rainbow six). i'm more into strategy games like starcraft or pax imperia or command and conquer.

my computer is an indigo imac 500, i got it last august. i like it, but it needs more ram.

its not the outside graphics that are the problem, i think the guns look decent and the backround pictures look great. its the faces that make me want to laugh.

and i've played diablo II, flatty.
