Full Version: nethack v3.4

The latest version of nethack was released a while ago, and I was wondering if anyone had tried it. The finally made an OS X-native graphics-based version, and it's fun.

However, I am used to running it from the command-line and actually prefer it that way because it is easier to make out what the enemies are (and I can play it from work via telnet). Has anyone compiled 3.4 to run from the console, and if so could you post on, say, your iDisk, or e-mail it to me. I suck at modifying makefiles and have no desire to wade through them.

I've never played NetHack, and I'd like someone to tell me if all the buzz about it is true. What makes this such a great game? I'm interested, I just want to know why people love it so much.

I appreciate the fact that the game is completely different each time. It is also pretty long and hard; I don't think I have ever made it more that half way through the game. It can be tricky, too because the stuff you get to help you out (wands, potions, scrolls, etc) are all unknown at the start (scrolls have names like ELBIB YLOH). I admit that I use spoiler pages for information on armor stats/weapon stats and identifying scrolls based off of clues. I recommend giving it a try.

The console version is small, so there is little reason not to try it. It is based somewhat off of Dungeons and Dragons, so I suppose it helps if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not myself, for what it's worth.

would it really be that hard for them to just use freaking real 2d graphics, sheesh. Other than the insane confusingness of having an h attack you @ while a > blocks you way its an alright game, for free.

Well, there is that cool looking Falcon's Eye NetHack variant that looks more like Diablo II, but it's only for PC.

The only pre-compiled OS X version 3.4 was the 2-D graphics version. I'm looking for the 3.4 with the h attacking the @ with the > in the way. I can download the source, but don't know the necessary modifications to make on the makefiles to get it to compile. I know people have, and I want my hands on the compiled version.
