Recently, I have been considering buying a Dreamcast. Its pretty cheap to buy, and I've heard good things about it. But I've also heard bad things, plus it was the last system sega made before leaving hardware behind. What do you think?

As a die-hard Sega loyalist, I believe the main reason the Dreamcast didn't go anywhere is because Sega had lost its estabished user base to Sony by that time. Had the Saturn been released before the original PlayStation (or been a 64-bit system, as was originally planned), it might have had a better chance to keep Sega in the hardware business until the Dreamcast inaugurated the 128-bit era. The DC's hardware is indeed inferior to that of the PS2, Gamecube, or Xbox, but considering that it came out over a year before the former, and two years before the latter two, it's not surprising. Generally, however, it is the first console released that dominates a given generation. NES beat the later and more advanced Master System, Genesis beat the SNES (although the SNES had more advanced graphical capabilities, Genesis was actually capable of faster gameplay), the the two incarnations of the PlayStation have and are ruling the 32/64 and 128-bit eras, respectively. Having finally gotten around to my point after that rant, it would be not to judge the Dreamcast by the fact that it was the last Sega console. If the games are as good as I've heard, it should still be well worth it, especiallt given the price.

I love my Dreamcast. I play Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Jet Grind Radio more than I have any of my PS2 games. It's too bad my Dreamcast is so far away...
[edit]Can't forget Soul Calibur. It's still the greatest fighting game ever made.[/edit]

Yes, definetlly get a Dreamcast. Look on Ebay, I got mine with an extra controller and six games for $55. It has low-cost, quality games that I find more entertaining than any of my PS2 games.
Get one!

I think a Dreamcast is certainly well worth it. It has quite a selection of games (Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi (

), etc.), and it's still quite a powerful console especially for its price.

Had they kept their price low and their stocks high, I think Sega would have won out. They did really crappy about releasing it and getting loads of games out and they showed when PS2 came out. Im pulling for Nintendo, but I dont think Gamecube will bring Nintendo back to the golden age just yet. It may take another system before we see that happening. Of course, with the fans its winning over with several games, GC might come out and surprise me in the end. A lot of my friends swore by the PS2 and GTA3 at the beginning of the year, but since then there really has been no big releases and theyve been left hanging, waiting for something new. Gamecube has a few titles to look forward too, such as another resident evil and several games from 64 being refurbished. buffed, and readied for the 'cube. Im awaiting the Episode II game LucasArts says they have coming.

On a semi-related topic, has anybody noticed how badly Microsoft's Xbox ripped off the Dreamcast controller? MS made it worse in almost every way to Sega's one, except the addition of two more buttons on the front.

Heh, its a bit more interesting than that. I like the GC's controller cause it doesnt cramp my hands after a while like the XBox controller does. Also the XBox controller is just too big for its own good. Dont like it at all. And yes, it is a complete rip-off of the Dreamcast's. A sidenote for you, the Dreamcast was a joint operation by Sega and Microsoft. After a while of seeing what went into the system and everything about it, Microsoft pulled out and started the XBox. So therefore the controller was gonna undoubtably look the same and the XBox itself is a huge system, stocked with all kinds of stuff in it to actually make it superior to the Dreamcast. Microsoft dumped Dreamcast and Sega to watch it fail, then used the designs to create its own. Perhaps thats why I dont think Sega will come back to making consules and just make PS2 and Gamecube games.

Try Soul Caliber, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, and Shenmue. Besides these, the Dreamcast has a wealth of fighting games(2D and 3D) and 2K sports games that are excellent.

DOA, get one of those games. DOA2 Hardcore was fun, if not a little short. More people alleviate the shortness though.
