Has anyone ever played this old game from Microprose? I'm convinced that it's impossible. I can start out strong, build up an army, but eventually all my troops get mad and mutiny, or run away when I visit towns. It doesn't matter how many ships I kill or how many forts I take over in the name of my queen, my troops ALWAYS get mad after a while, and I slowly starve and get captured by a no name pirate...

help?

What difficulty level are you playing on? It's best to start out as an Apprentice (I think that's the easiest) and play until you can finish the game, before moving up a level...

OK, a tip: to keep your crew from rising in mutiny, or from running off, every so often you have to divide up the loot. You can do that at any friendly town, but I'm not positive where anymore..... anyway, you divide up the plunder, and then you rehire them. Their happiness level increases, and they are far less likely to run off on you.

Unless it involves pipeline of course. Bloody nuisance.

Dividing the plunder? I must have missed this feature while I played heavily.

I actually just played it a few months ago. I think it is one of the best games ever, personally. I have lost a couple of summers to it.

Go into a city somewhere, and go to the bank. There it will ask you whether or not you want to divide the plunder. If you say yes, it splits it up according to shares - you get fewer shares on easier levels. Then, you have only your flagship, and a minimal crew. However, your reputation stays with you, and the men and money will pour back in.

Watch out though, the game is highly unstable in anything above OS 7.

I've only got Pirates- not the Gold version. I lost more than a couple of summers on that game... It was so much fun taking on War Galleons in sloops.
When you have a large crew, go loot a few spanish ports. Divide the plunder, lather rinse and repeat.

Yeah - the first version of Pirates I played was for the Apple IIC - a floppy disk (the real floppy disks). I was in 1st grade, and instead of sneaking down to watch TV on Saturdays I'd sneak down to play Pirates. I really love that game. Too bad it is so unstable.

Aben Zin; E-mail me, I'm working on something you may be interested in.

Does anyone know if there is a way to purchase a copy of Gold anymore?

Actually, a quick look at the download section revealed that instead of a full game download in their download section, it's just an update. E-bay?
