Full Version: Connections Between Star Wars and StarCraft

Neon Soldier
After seeing "Attack of the Clones," I noticed a vague connection to Blizzard's StarCraft. Here's what I noticed:

In the part where Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padme are chained to poles to be eaten by creatures, the said creatures bear an uncanny resemblance to StarCraft units. One looks almost exactly like a Lurker, one looks like a Benglaas (the half-panther, half-leopard jungle terrain critter), and one looks like a Rhynadon (the rhino-like badlands critter).

Maybe George Lucas is an SC fan, or just ran out of ideas. Anyone else notice it?

I agree completely about the Lurker comment; I recognized that as soon as I saw it.

However, I think the notes about the Benglaas and the Rhynadon are just a wee bit stretched; those are just rather generic creature types, ones that can be repeated in almost any science-fiction story.

Hrm..
I'd have to disagree on the lurker. Maybe my memory is starting to fade, but doesn't the lurker stick closer to the ground and have a larger abdonemon(argh.. sp? )?

I haven't seem the movie yet (Yes, it sucks to be me ), but I've always thought Starcraft had more than a passing resemblance to Starship Troopers. The armor the marines have in SC seems about as effective as the armor used in the movie.

whether they look like SC creatures or not(and they dont), i dont think there is any intentional connection between the two. episode 2 is a great movie, by the way. yoda rox0rs.

Yeah, but the hanging jaw and head, not to mention overall body structure, are very similar.

I noticed the Rhynadon and Bengalaas, but not the Lurker. Oh well, I'm seeing it AGAIN in a few hours, so I'll look.

Yeah, Lurkers and Hydralisks both have the same, very distinct long head, plus no bottom to the jaw.

Now that I think of it, yea, that thing does look similar to what Id peg a lurker to look like. The others are too much a stretch, the cat-like creature doesnt seem to have the power the benglaas seemed to have (though it was easily killed, you could see some features) and the cat thing was just too small (though fully grown) to be the same. And the big thing reminds me of a rhino, but with 3 horns that arnt as sharp.

Starship Troopers came out in 1997, and Starcraft was in 1998 (I think) ...

been this way for quite some time. when the first wave of the titles came out, I got one. Guess my nick is easier to pin a title to than some others.

i think starcraft was released in '96 for the PC... and 98 for mac. im almost certain, because i started playing it in 98, and i know it had been out for much longer on the pc side of things.

In that case, perhaps Starship Troopers is based on SC. It certainly wasn't based on the book.

Both came out in '97. The likeliness of them being based on each other is minimal, though my brother and I were watching the movie a while back and the similarities are rather startling. Though the ships are different, they serve the exact same purposes. The bugs are so much like Zerg it's ridiculous. They even have big huge ones that run in packs with the little ones (like Ultralisks to Zerglings)...

I don't know, figure 2 days to write the script, 1 day for casting (maximum), a few days of 'acting' in front of blue screens and a couple of weeks for the special effects. That's probably all the time they spent on it. They could have come out a lot closer than you think.

[note for anyone extremely naive-I know how unrealistic these dates are, they are meant *humorously* to reflect on the sheer craptacularness of this film]
