Full Version: off-topic: EV Open Source Alternative Released
Ambrosia Software Web Board > General Interest > Just Games
epiar
I hope I don't offend anybody here, but a couple of guys and I wanted to make an open source version of Escape Velocity (immitation is the greatest form of flattery, right?) and so, we've been working on one. We just hit version 0.17 and I was wondering if the Escape Velocity fans, being very very into this kind of game, would take a look at it (remember, it's not 1.0, but it shouldn't crash) and let me know what you think (chris_thielen (at) users.sourceforge.net). Our open source version, called Epiar, is currently available for Linux and Windows, but we should have a Mac build within two weeks (Mac programmer will be free then). Anyway, hope I didn't offend anybody with the off topic post. Okay, back to Escape Velocity fun! :-) (you can find it at epiar.sf.net)

I hope you have talked to the heads of EV and Ambrosia Software, they are the ones that have all the powers.

What would bring an open source of EV, is it better than plug-ins? (I do not know much about programming)

No. It just means that you can make changes to the game its self

Woah, I forgot the link. Anyway, I editted the original message with the link, but if you're too lazy to scroll up (which I would understand :-)) you can find it at epiar.sf.net.

If you are using any of the copyrighted graphics, ship names, storylines, etc. from Escape Velocity, you are doing so illegally.

No... we're not... This is an open source game... all the content and code is originaly created... calm thyselves.

As long as you aren't doing anything illegal, great! From the screenshots this game looks very impressive - I can't wait for the Mac build.

[bug report]whenever I try to open the map, the game quits. Every single time. I have Windows XP, and fairly good hardware. [/bug report]

Also, it seems to be very unstable, it has never gone more than a minute without quitting

[edit] Erm, nm, my computer jsut must be really crappy since it worked fine on my other one, so never mind[/edit]

I downloaded. I tested. I fell in love.

I noticed some flaws though:
- No sounds.
- The ship only has about 8 or 6 different angles. I think that 360 differet angels would be nice.
- When I blew up that big fat white ship in the beginning, he just hovered below me thus making it impossible for me to fire at him and he recharged his shields. Perhaps not a bug, but an AI-bug. (Or did the AI just outsmart me?)
- No possibility to quit the application. (I managed to by using the good old Ctrl+Alt+Del.)

That's all for now. I'll play it a little more and report more bugs.

This can become quite an awesome game!

And BariSaxGuy5 is correct, there are some advantages with having a PC. They are not many, but there are some.

It interests EV fans, that's for sure, but it's not EV-related enough (especially with it turning into a bug report topic). iMove to Just Games.

Looks very nice. I await the Mac build.

I tried the game using virtual PC. It seemed unstable and I didn't really like it (I could only play for 15 min.) Maybe this weekend I can give an updated review of the game.
