Full Version: AOE II for Mac: how is it?

The subject title says it all: how does Age of Empires: Reign of Kings run on the Macintosh, for those who happen to have it. I really like this game, but I can only play games on the mac. Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure yet.. But I REALLY want it!

I'm running it on the machine I have out in the living room, a 233 iMac, right now and it runs great. Better, in fact, than the first one. Superb game.

It's an excellent game, and I highly recommend buying it. It runs fine for me on my iMac, but on my iBook with 128 megs RAM I've had some performance issues in large games, i.e. myself and 5 comps on a giant map. The latest update, 1.03, seems to have fixed this for the most part.

I'm on a beige g3 (267), with 160 real RAM, and 32 MB of a virtual memory.
It runs most excellently, but the biggest game I've tried is 6 players on a huge map.

Well I've just bought it, and its great.
The only dubious point is the Scottish accent in the tutorial campaign. Its so funny, half the words aren't pronounced properly, and it seems to drift between Scottish, Irish, and Russian (I think)

I've got it and it's really fun. the only problems with it (for me) are
1. Many, Many tipe -11 errors.
2. When you test a custom senario and beat it the mouse disappears.
3. Some of the buildings (like walls) look very bad on hills.
4. some of the things they say are on the cd (like instuctions for making computer player scripts) arn't there.
But all in all it's a great game and you should by it.

I forgot one thing:
5. It's made by windows.

its decent. being a big time fan of SC kinda ruined it but its still fun. The only problems I find is that you cant target the ground with your troops and expect them to respond to enemy attacks. They will go to that spot, then they will attack. There are ways around this but its still annoying.

I've heard that you can only play multiplayer games against other Mac users on AOE2 - not people with the PC version. Is this true?

No, it isn't. Windows is no more a company than Macintosh is.

My problems:
1)Sounds sometimes just turns itself off, you have to quit and turn the game on again if you want sound today.
2)Yes, walls do look weird on hills.
3)Yes, when you order offensive units to attack a building or ground they will not fight back if an enemy attacks unless you order them to do so.
4)White text sometimes appears over light-colored backgrounds.

Other than that, it's fine.

F***! That's removed most chances of me buying it then - all my friends are PC users.

Okay, here's some hypocrisy in action. First, read my above post from 10 minutes ago. Then, read the below (from after my l33t impulse buying sk1llz were initialised)

I've been doing some single-player games, and it does indeed crash regularly. It's playable, but very irritating, and they are the type of crashes that, under OS9, require a restart rather than just a force-quit.

As long as we're talking about crashes…every time I try to load a saved game of mine, it pops up and says there was a memory allocation error (this is AoE talking, not OS X) and then it quits. OS X doesn't give the "quit unexpectly box" so the game terminated itself, not really a crash. Help?

I just found the 1.0.4 patch and that solved my problem.

Mine only did that a couple times...

And Bold! says that they're working on Mac-PC AoeII net play, but it might be too good to be true.

Let's hope it's true because I really would want to play this against people I know
