I hope Warcraft 3 will be cool, i got but i am grounded...so i have to wait a while untill i can play it.... I hope The Orcs And the Night Elfs are cool...and maybe Undead. My Brother has been playing it so i watch him and i think i will go to b.net first and get used to it there then maybe channle all the Campains....

I think Warcraft 3 (from what i have seen) is better than StarCraft, SC Brood War and Warcraft 1,2....I played, like 3 minutes of it a friend's house; before i was grounded and it was a tad bad though it was 11comps vs me...... it was really 8 but they where all on one team and I was on my own (no Comps and no help from friend)...... I really hope it was worth the time to install it and the space; I had to delete some demos (I have lots of demos...), some of them i really like. (I only keep demos I like a lot....) =(

*sigh* the elf storyline sucked. They could have really taken that Illdrath story out to some lengths. I feel the ending was somewhat rushed.

Ah well, we'll probably see Illdrath again in an expansion or something.

Hah, I doubt THAT. It just focuses more on micromanagement than producing 1984908435 units. But it is more varied...

i agree, the NE storyline was kinda weird, most of it was spent waking people up. oh, and its Illidan, not Illdrath.
that notwithstanding, war3 is so much superior to starcraft its almost painful. of course, considering it came out what, 5 or so years later, one would expect that.
i cant think of very many things that werent good about war3.

you dont stand a chance vs. 8 comps. the computer is much better in war3 than in sc.

Accutaly i do stand a chance now that i am ungrounded and i have played a few more games and for me i suck at sc...unless i get in the right area of big game hunters, otherwise when i am starting to get defence; the comp apears out of no where and kills me instantly.
The map editor is kinda cool though i like putting fire on metal gates and boats. Although i never end up building a map which i wanted to....cause i get cairred away. in my mind i am always going: oh gotta give these guys this, oh yeah can't forget about that. The Map ends up as unfiar to me where comp has a big force or i have a big force.
The talking pictures kinda suck in the campains... i wish they where better, like in SC. Pretty soon i bet there is gonna be Warcraft 3 Matrix maps like in SC, they already got Tower Defense for Warcraft 3..... What next? i wonder.....

it does take more skill because many people are much better at micromanaging then they are controlling huge lines of attack. this one focuses more upon the hero and how you use him rather than on making full groups of 12 marines. And its a lot tougher too. In SC and BW, I didnt start losing missions till halfway through BW, I lost the last scourge mission many times before conquering it.

I had the same problem, some 1,011 bytes short (not kidding!). Personally, I don't use the speech extentions, or voice recognition stuff, so I turned those off, as well as some of those odd printers apple includes by default that I don't have. It seems to have dropped the system RAM quite a bit.

Just look for odd extentions that you won't use or will use rarely, and that are likely not to be used by Warcraft 3. If you don't have firewire or airport capabilities, disable those, etc...

One of the biggest things I can think of right now is the inability to play multiplayer with people not on a LAN without using battle.net Supporting TCP/IP play would be nice. Starcraft didn't have that either, but Warcraft 2 and Diablo 2 did.

They also don't have a ladder for the free-for-all, that would be nice.

That, and I dislike the talking unit portraits in warcraft 3. The grunt looks horrible!

Warcraft3 is much better of a game than Starcraft ever was. There is much more actual strategy, not just max out your supply and send your guys in. And the RPG elements rule! I did all the campaigns before it and am now like halfway through the Nightelf campaign. I agree, the NE campaign does not live up to the other campaigns at all....Oh well great game nontheless.

The mouth speaking in game is off to the point where it is painful, so I dont look anymore and just listen. I havent played the game in a while cause I got aggravated that even on low settings the game still didnt run smoothly on single player. Maybe if I get this new ATI video card thats coming out soon and processor upgrade I could play it on my G4 Titatnium. Do the new Apple Retail stores upgrade macs? I heard from someone they will for a price, but its a little expensive... I know you cant upgrade any mac except the new iMac by yourself.

Then you know wrong. Out of curiosity, by G4Titanium, do you mean a desktop or a laptop? Secondly, any Apple desktop from that past several years is brain dead easy to upgrade by yourself... just flip down the side, and pop in whatever card you want.

However, if you have a G4, you really shouldn't have to do that. I'm running WC III on the lowest end G4 ever produced, and it runs just fine with all the settings down low. How much RAM do you have? I suspect that might be the larger issue.

I have a laptop and plenty of ram (256). However my G4 Processor is running at a blazing 396mhz. The new ATI video card runs faster than that. Perhaps if I knew out to overclock my G4 than it would run faster. I am not sure whats making it run so slow, I dont know what affects a processor speed. Perhaps because I am using MacOS X?

I'm waiting until I get OS 9.1 until I get WC3. I've got speed (500MHz G3), memory (448MB, PC66) and video power (Rage Orion, 16MB). I'm also thinking of getting a new Vid Card, Radeon Mac Edition probably. That'll kick me up to 32MB. I just need a new OS...

Make sure you have everything set to low, (not just the stuff in the in-game options menu) the resolution is set to 640x480, and you could also try it in OS 9. (Be sure to turn Virual Memory off.)

That's how I did it anyways...

You'd probably want it if you're going to play War3...

Just one thing I think is worth adding: My friend has a 533mhz DP Tower, and my Dad has a 550mhz G4 PowerBook. (which I'm using to play War3)

On my Dads TiBook, I have to turn everything to low, except animation, and run it in 640x480 to get a reasonable frame rate. Whereas my friend can turn everything to high, run it in 1024x768, and still run it much faster then I can. Now, keep in mind my friend is using 9.2, so the other processor is just collecting dust right now.

Aside from the processor, the only mager difference between his machine, and mine, are the graphics cards. He's got a 32mb GeForce2, I've got a sh¡tty lil' 16 meg Radeon... Get the picture?

One last thing, what's this about the night elf campaign being bad? I thought it was fine...

You spend too much time waking up people.
You only get to use Illidan for one mission before he just ducks out of the plot.
Blizzard still doesn't get the concept of Archers not just being melee units with a little range.
The ending also seemed somewhat rushed.

Granted, but that has virtualy nothing to do with the NE campaign. (Anyways, archers, and ranged units in general, don't work extremely in blizzards chosen path of engines.)

Sure does, they're the elves' primary unit!
Blizzard should have paid attention to bungie's Myth and Myth II as far as archers go. In WC3, Archers (and riflemen) are way too cheap and way too underpowered. How is it a pointed blade flying towards you at 90 MPH does less damage than a sword smacking you?

QUOTE

It's still a little disappointing that the ending's rushed because you don't actually do anything with the undead untill the end.

It would have been nice if they had added in a little more with Illidan, or at least made it so the mission he's in isn't so easy.

I'm trying to like it...I really am. But so far, I've been pretty disappointed with Warcraft III, as much as I've tried.

For one, I had to put the gamma on highest just to see a thing, and even then I have to regularly use the "riseandshine" cheat, because when it gets dark I still can't see. I can't play the Undead Scourge very easily either, thanks to their damned Blight adding to that darkness.

Besides that, it's all very cartoony, even more so than Starcraft in its own way. With the scenes at the beginning and end of missions, they made no effort to mask the fact some people are bigger than buildings...and it looked horrible. The unit quality wasn't all that good either, but that's because I had to set it to low for it to work reasonably enough (still lags, which is upsetting.)

The balance doesn't feel right either. Starcraft was so perfectly balanced it was unbelievable, but in Warcraft III so much is just plain wrong. Ghouls are the cheapest starting unit, but can beat Archers and Footmen easily and give Grunts a run for their money. The Orcs and Undead seem to have every advantage over the Humans and Night Elves, especially the humans, who seem to have found themselves caught in the area of "average" humans are thrown into in fantasy stories/games so much they seem utterly crap. The Night Elves aren't as bad, but they're fairly underpowered in places it looks like they shouldn't be. As earlier said, ranged attacks just don't seem to work right. Blizzard made it so that it takes a lot more to kill enemies (280 HP being low, and 70 damage being high, in place of Starcraft's 25 HP being low, 30 damage being high), and as such, long-ranged fighters suffer badly, as melee fighters have much more time to close in.

There's something else about the game I can't quite put a finger too, as well, which really gets in the way of me liking it. I've read about all the units before it came out, and again after, and done several tests (Banshee's to possess enemies, continue after victory, then test) of units, but for some reason, nothing works in the field. Maybe it's the interface, or the background, or the constant lag, but the game just doesn't work for me...

All of the units abilties have worked for me, Like taking over a sheep with a Banshee
My only complaint would be the ranged attacks too. Some ballance issue for me. With the humans. Without some heros, humans are toast. The NE units need to work with there trees alot specialy with there range attack downfall. The undead ground being a auto repair pad for all units works a bit too well. The Orcs...well, being Orcs.

Not corrupt by evil... Though I suppose one could argue that having spent all that time down... there... He's not corrupt by anything anymore. I guess we'll just have to wait until the expansion set to find out.

Sure does, they're the elves' primary unit!
I suppose from a game play stand point, but it's still just a descion in gameplay, and doesn't effect the story a whole lot.

Anyways, I never used the supposed primary units. Forinstance, in the undead campaign, I just made a few dozen (well, two dozen) Necros, and let them use Raise Dead... It's quite a cool strat, but doesn't work worth a **** vs human players.

Blizzard should have paid attention to bungie's Myth and Myth II as far as archers go.
My thought exactly.
Originally posted by Slug:
In WC3, Archers (and riflemen) are way too cheap and way too underpowered. How is it a pointed blade flying towards you at 90 MPH does less damage than a sword smacking you?
Some people would say the exact oppisite, that melee weapons should do more damage then Ranged weapons. (not me, but I've heard the arguement before.) Bungie did ranged/melee balance superbly in TFL/M2, but you have to remember that the engines are wholey different. You can literally dodge arrows in Myth, but in the craft engines, everything follows you, and hits nomatter what. Thus powerful ranged attacks don't work quite as well in the craft series.

Errr, are you talking about the World Tree, or the Tree of Life? Regardless... Relax, it's just a game.

Lemme guess, G3 iMac?

Besides that, it's all very cartoony, even more so than Starcraft in its own way. With the scenes at the beginning and end of missions, they made no effort to mask the fact some people are bigger than buildings...and it looked horrible.
That's actually something that's annoyed me about the craft series, and many other RTS' too. The thing that really bothers me though, is that it's stupidley easy to change the size of a unit in War3. Certainly Blizzard could have sacrificed some time and effort to make it a bit more realistic. (But then, how do we know they didn't? What if they tried it during beta and it didn't work out?)

The unit quality wasn't all that good either, but that's because I had to set it to low for it to work reasonably enough (still lags, which is upsetting.)
Don't try to complain that everything looks crappy and that it's running slow on out-dated hardware. You'll never win.
Originally posted by SilverDragon:
I'm waiting to complain about balance issues until I've gotten a few dozen more AMMS (or whatever the heck it's called.) games under my belt. That way I can confidently state what's wrong. I agree though, the balance is definately off. But how much so remains to be seen.
Originally posted by SilverDragon:
As earlier said, ranged attacks just don't seem to work right. Blizzard made it so that it takes a lot more to kill enemies (280 HP being low, and 70 damage being high, in place of Starcraft's 25 HP being low, 30 damage being high), and as such, long-ranged fighters suffer badly, as melee fighters have much more time to close in.
I guess we'll just have to hope that they get it right in Starcraft2.

Some people just can't play/don't like some games. Well, better get used to it, 'cause that's not gonna change.

Yes, iMac. Diablo II was a bit dark too, if I remember, although Starcraft was fine. And I love Banshees, just as I loved Dark Archons. Only a pity you can only have a limit of three heroes regardless of how many sides you control... Good point about the Blight. Is there any way to destroy that? I've seen it remain after the Scourge lose the buildings there...it seems to me that a Ziggurat rush, so to speak, would lay some helpful land for any Scourge player.

Complain? I added right after that it was because I had to set things to low. If I was complaining about anything, it was that I had to do that at all. : )

And...outdated hardware. <growls> This thing was pretty much new about a year ago. Sometimes I hate technology. This has to last me four more years, and it's already outdated hardware.

I'm not sure. I don't think it's a matter of just not liking the game. This is the perfect game for me, and I've waited for something like this for a very long time. Age of Empires was extremely poor by comparison...didn't even have anything magical. <grins> I know that I should like this game, but something (or a few things) is stopping me.

I actually think it might be that the background is so eye-catching that I can't keep track of what is actually happening. I probably need to get used to everything a bit more before I can concentrate. : )

Err, yes, I just re-read your post. Guess I need to read stuff a little slower...

Don't get me wrong, that's a good computer, (Better then what I had before it broke (Though I'm assuming it's an iMac 500?)) but it was outdated when you bought it. Low-end machines generally are. If you want something that lasts, buy a tower.

Yeah, I found that the scenery, etc. was somewhat distracting too at first, and the units also didn't stand out to me a whole lot from everything else, but after awhile I got used to it...

Why is it always the more powerfullunits are always bigger? I can understand with the Nerubians, being bugs and all, but why is it that a Paladin is three times as tall as a footman, or a Far-seer is twice the size of a Raider? Why is the Dwarf Hero taller than a peasant if he's supposed to be a dwarf?

At least the unit:building size ratios aren't as bad as they are in WarCraft II (where a whole farm took up as much area as four peasents tightly-bunched together).

Another thing: I HATE THE WHOLE UPKEEP CONCEPT.

Hmm...for some reason my ffa games aren't counted on either of those.

As for balance changes, anyone who read the info for the 1.01 patch (the full info, not just the "several files necessary for battle.net") you'd notice they made some early balance changes. Starcraft was unbalanced until v1.04, and then they still fixed some minor changes in 1.08 It'll take them some time, but I'm sure they'll balance it. Keep in mind the game has been released less than a month. They need time to figure out which things need changing and how much.

My only gripe about the Night Elves is their heroes don't have any good mass attack spells. The human archmage has blizzard, the orc far seer has chain lightning (very nice when used right), I haven't really delved too much into the undead, but the only thing that comes close for the night elves is starfall, and that has too short of a range (not to mention its limited to the caster).

As for upkeep, I think its just fine. I never was a fan of massive hordes of units anyway...

Excerpt from the War3 ladder FAQ:
Will there be a FFA ladder?
The initial release of Warcraft III on Battle.net does not have support for a FFA Ladder, but additional ladders might be added at a later date if Free for All games prove to be popular.

Starfall is quite powerful against larger numbers, (in the 40s-50s, or multiple armies) and actually does have a fair range. Thing is, it's useless versus less then five enemies. It's more of a "weaken vast areas of units", rather then a "kill small area of units" spell. The elf Demon Hunter also has metamorphasis (that's what it's called, right?) which can be devastating when used at the proper time.

Orcs also have Whirlwind, which is a particular favorite of mine for using on groups of peons.

As for undead... ph33r my l33t infernals. Death and decay can also be kewl... (Latter is cast by the Lich, right?)

Yes, I've had a G3 minitower for 3 years, and it has served me well. Very upgradable, also. (Even though it's VERY outdated. So is the 500MHz processor I put in two weeks ago.)

I was looking through my old email and found something about Pillars of Garendall. The requirements for PoG say that MacOS 9.0 is required, but my dad said that many games require 9.0 because they need OpenGL and/or CarbonLib. PoG worked on 8.6, which is what I have, and I was wondering if it was the same for WC3. Does anyone know? I wrote an email about it to Blizzard, but they haven't responded yet.
