I don't actually have the hardware yet, but in about a month I will be trying to set up an LAN between an iBook and a Hewlett Packard (or whatever it is). I don't know what exactly is needed for Starcraft, I know Mac IPX, but is there anything I need to do or have otherwise? This is a Mac board but I hope someone knows!

This is another one of "those" questions, aint it. Maybe like MacNetworking.com would know the answer, if it even exists.

It is really easy to do this. If you have the newest version of Starcraft you would use udp/ip to connect. If not then use IPX. I have played with pc's over a lan all summer.

Just make sure you both have the same version for it to work.

For every LAN party ive every gone to, My computer automatically connects to any other PC in the area when I plug in with either osx or os9. Ive never tried with SC but diablo 2 and tac ops and wc3 work fine. Ive never gotten PC-Mac File transfer to work though.

It should go painlessly. It has for me as long as I used Win98 on my PC and Mac OS 8.5 on my macs. However, when I upgraded to Windows XP, I got problems. Then again, all I have tried to network with from the mac platform is Mac OS 8.5. With newer versions, it might work just fine.

Just remember to have the same game version on both computers.

Ah, darn! I need to find a way to transfer a mac upgrade file from my PC to my mac before the LAN party next week!
Anyone have any ideas?

we always just burned cds with stuff we needed, failing that, email or whatever works. There IS a way to file transfer between PCs and macs I believe, I dont know it though.

Neither of them are at all necessary for playing StarCraft over a LAN; all you'd need them for is if you wanted to transfer files or something.

Now is that pretty much true for all games? I have Alpha Centauri, Mechwarrior 2 and StarCraft - those would be the main ones... I wonder if it's geared more specifically in those...

Blizzard makes their software pretty compatable...when I hooked up a pc laptop to my powerbook for starcraft, all I needed was a crossover cable. Hook up through and IPX network in the multiplayer menu, you might need to activate the IPX driver for your pc. The mac should be ready to go.

If you are only using two computers in your network, don't waste your money on a hub, just buy the crossover cable, it'll save you some cash. DAVE will make things easy for you, I recommend it.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that, but I don't have the $$$ right now- I just got an iBook. And the PC isn't even here yet... which makes me wonder...
