Full Version: Myst 3: Exile - Bragging rights!

Well, I know it's long after it came out, but I had to wait for my friend to get a better computer. But, once there, being the dynamic duo that toppled Riven in a month, we conquered again. My logical brain and spatial eye coupled with his common sense and eye for detail triumphed over Myst 3. In four sittings, total play time under 8 hours, we went and completed Exile. Not only that, but we also saw all six possible endings in under that time. No matter what we do, my friend and I seem to be one of those proofs that "two heads are exactly 6.1057 times better then one."

I don't normally brag, but I'm proud of this. Good friends, good times.

Exactly why I liked Riven better. That, and what the subtitles read at the end after you trap the guy and he is pleading to you: "No, no, no, no, no, no, no!"

Very funny.

Riven was mean bastard. Myst III was easier on me, but more importantly, astoundingly beautiful. I actually managed to beat Amateria by myself. The ride at the end is something unforgettable, it was so beautiful and thrilling.

And I keep the MP3s found in the hidden folder on iTunes. Also quite nice.

Yes, but Riven was solvable. Many people think Exile was too easy.

Exile was also beautiful, had 3-D panning, etc. but somthing struck me about Riven and I like those graphics better.

Amateria had absolutely the best ending sequence, and the best puzzles in the Myst series - in the genre, in fact.

Yep. Don't hafta buy the music CD they're selling. Use some utility to open the invisible folder in the Exile directory. You'll have to do some dredging, but all the music you hear in the games is there somewhere, plus a lot of other good bits.

Open ResEdit. Select "File:Get File/Folder Info". Go to your Myst 3 folder, and open it. Inside should be a folder you cannot see in Finder called "M3Data". Select it and press "Open". A dialog should pop up. Deselect the 'Invisible" check box, close the dialog, and save.

The folder should appear in your Myst 3 folder in a moment (or, under OS X, after you logout and back in).

Actually, I thought Exile was a good deal harder than Riven...

The Amateria ending sequence was probably the coolest movie I have ever seen in any game.

I played through the first third of Exile just to save before that Amateria point, so I can watch it again whenever I feel down. God that's great stuff.

Hmm, now that I have access to M3 Data, where is the main theme?

I found it on a website once, but I could never find it again. I'm talking about what they played in the intro.

Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power. Postulate 2: Time is money. But power = work/time. Using postulates 1 and 2, this can be written as knowledge = work/money. Solving for money, we get money = work/knowledge - that is, as knowledge approaches zero, money approaches infinity, regardless of work done. Conclusion: The less you know, the more you make.

The closest I can find is TOHB_Endgame. The two are essentially the same aside from the entrance.

You should only need ResEdit to make the M3Data folder visible; after that, you can do everything in finder.

Riven struck me quite a bit more than Myst III, but I dislike it a little. Mainly it seemed like a whole lot of disk swapping for rather little substance. I never would have completed it without help anyway, as I thought I'd played with the rotational room as much as possible. (I seriously pushed the button forever, and went inside the room on each time - from the side entrance as well. Never found anything out. Then my friend comes along, pushes the button a few times, and waltzes in and beats the game.)

Exile was a bit less memorable, but the gameplay mirrored Myst more with a clear story progression, which I enjoyed. Amateria was d**n cool, too.

So, my favorites are Myst I and III, but I remember Riven the most.

I din'treally enjoy Exile and had to actually use walkthru, despite going thru Myst and Riven without any help.

Riven will still have the legendary character to it. Exile wasn't excessively easy, it's just that my friend and I were too good. We would literally arrive in an age, figure out the principles behind the age and what we needed to ultimately accomplish in five minutes, then spend a few minutes exploring and manipulating stuff before solving the puzzles. Amataria was the easiest, and the one I had the most fun in. Na'aryn was the hardest, mostly because it was so unlike anything in Riven or Myst (and half our time was spent looking for pathways!) I loved the glass balls. Playing with the weights and watching the balls shatter was tons of fun. The only thing that was slightly disapointing to me was that the final puzzles were way too easy. It only took us maybe ten minutes to solve them. However, I liked the fact that they had a good ending, where everyone, even the bad guy goes home happy. It was, overall, an amazing game.

The ending was OK, but I'll never forget (as said earlier) watching the subtitles say "No, no, no, no, no, no, no!"

resedit???? come on guys, there is a much easyier way to make invisable files visable. (not that i dont like muckin in resedit and then bragging) go to www.download.com and search for "BigSecret" when you find it, download it, unstuff it. open it and go to the menu "commands" select "add invisable folder" or "add invisable file" which ever you want. go to the locaton of the invisable file/folder, and when you find the invisable folder/file you want, add it, then select it and hit "show"
the file/folder becomes visable, and you can do what you want.

Why is that easier than opening the file in ResEdit, getting info, and clicking the "Invisible" flag checkbox?

Yes - I'm trying to decide which way to do it so I can look the coolest.

The ultimate question of the universe: Which is cooler to use: ResEdit or Terminal?

The ultimate answer to the ultimate question: 42. But that doesn't help!

ResEdit is much cooler, old skool chic baby.

Anyone here read the Myst trilogy of books? A great read even if you're not a fan of the games.

Great stuff indeed. Even if you don't read them, buy the hardbacks so your bookshelf looks cool.

And I hear there's a fourth book due out eventually.
